I haven't read all the posts so forgive me any redundancy. Never return the CVs to Pearl after the attack. Don't even try to evac the Wildcats at Wake, it's too dangerous. Set your courses for Canton Is or to the SE as far as you can get at mission speed. Then decide whether to send them to Oz, NZ or the WC. Keep Indy away. Once your search planes tell you the KB is 3 days away (Midway or beyond) evacuate everything from PH with less than 50% flotation damage (and not on fire of course) for the WC with whatever escort you can scrape up, there'll be lots of subs out there. After that, just be flipping careful!

Early on, the AI isn't too bad. It might do things a human opponent might do. And he or she would love to drop his KB right on top of your CVs. Consider it a lesson.

Don't give up on the game, you're just starting to have fun.

I dont know if theres anything left to be said which has not been said already so I'll just rehash things for Sir Claude from my perspective (if, in fact, he's still reading).

Sounds like you got more than you expected. That could be either very good or very bad, depending on your mindset. If you enjoy only arcade games of the Total War kind, for example (which I enjoy as well), WitP will be very overwhelming and you will probably never be able to make your peace with it. On the other hand, if you enjoy the minutiae and the almost limitless possibilities this game offers, have patience and a develop more of a thicker skin where the AI is concerned. Please keep in mind that it's evolved to be this way (it's been designed to cheat, to be perfectly frank) because most people complain that it isnt enough of a challenge.

If you do decide to stick around, please try to make full use of the forum community. Not only is it a great bunch of people with diverse opinions and encyclopedic knowledge on many topics, and most are more than willing to help walk a newbie though various difficulties and share the wisdom theyve acquired though many hard knocks. In addition, sad to say but the game manual, while essential to learning the ropes (RTFM has never been more true), is completely inadequate to explaining everything that this game does or can do.

Finally, with an eye to the last bit, please consider being a little more sociable. I can theoretically understand your perspective, but making a post which amounts to "I bought an expensive game and without really trying to understand it got pwned by the AI and now I'm sad and want my money back" isnt very sporting.

Hope to see you back and in a better mood. [;)]

What a shocker - the AI is trying to win the game.

If only Yamamoto had such excellent AI instead of that over-cautious sexagenarian Nagumo... hmm... the AI would have said "All Your Base Are Belong To Us" and - just like that - zap, we all would be eating with chopsticks!

Hooray for da bad-ass AI, but... hey... I'm eating with sticks... err, something wrong with that... who got me chopsticks on my Big Mac!!??

ps: You think you got it rough with OUR AI? Just wait until Skynet gains conscience... THAT will be gamely. As Schwarnegger once said: "When Skynet becomes self-conscious... say good-bye to pizza delivery, to your credit cards and to winning a game over the Internet ever again."

ps 2: Random Thought of The Day -- what kind of conscience will Skynet have with all the internet porn around?

I can just picture cohorts, centuries, and legions of McDonald's characters.

Start with one of the smaller scenarios. Much better way to learn the ropes.

so, newb or not, one expects perfect historic moves by an AI of a game if he sets it to historical? If one really thinks that, then really every aircraft, every ship, every ground unit has to be at the same place in the same state each and every day of the war at the histroic dates, no matter if day one, or day five. Which starts to fail if you (as the other side) fail to sink/damage/delay/shoot down a certain ship/LCU/ac.

I still don't get it. But yes, I may have been a little harsh but considering how the op did his thread I am not really sorry.

No point in playing then, it simply becomes a documentary. It's a game, played out using an historical prospective. How much historical prospective depends on game choices at the start and house rules that attempt to overcome some of the games limitations.

It occurs to me that different people have different goals. Maybe the OP was looking to reenact the PTO in the same way that guys wearing the blue and grey do.

If you want to re-enact, the coral sea and guadalcanal are pretty good
