Can anyone recall a quote from Admiral Somerville (I think it was) referring to the R-class ships of the Eastern Fleet? Something about them being old tarts.....

I think the battle at the Chosin Reservoir gave the two best quotes :
OP Smith's
"Gentlemen, we are not retreating. We are merely advancing in another direction"
and Chesty Puller's
"We're surrounded. That simplifies our problem of getting to these people and killing them"

And OP Smith wasn't lying and Chesty Puller wasn't just fake bravado.

This is a great book on that conflict, and will firmly cement anyone's hatred of Macarthur who this time almost added a division of marines to his list of units lost (if they would have obeyed Almond/Macarthur's orders to the letter, the 1st Marine division and Puller's first Marine regiment would have certainly perished

'....the War situation has developed not necessarily to Japans advantage, while the general trends of the world have all turned against her interest.'

If that is not the all time master of the understatement, then I don't know what is!

'Hitler knows that he will have to break us in this island or lose the war.
If we can stand up to him, all Europe may be free and life of the world may move forward into broad, sunlit uplands.

But if we fail, then the whole world, including the United States, including all that we have known and cared for, will sink into the abyss of a New Dark Age, made more sinister, and perhaps more protracted, by the lights of perverted science.
Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves that, if the British Empire and its Commonwealth lasts for a thousand years,
men will still say, “This was their finest hour!'

This Churchill qoute is the hair raiser for me.

We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender, and if, which I do not for a moment believe, this island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God's good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old
