The whole Palembang situation scares me... you will sure take the base...but which will be the price in terms of damaged facilities?[X(]

It should scare me but after losing 3 CVs in the first week not much phases me anymore! [:)]
It helps Torsten offered to move out if the forts get to level 2. He has moved only Dutch forces in so far and appears to want to simply slow me and divert my forces from other areas. It has worked! He also may go all out and try to hit the divisions on the water which would not be a good result here either. This actually scares me the most currently.
If they are damaged due to an early attack winning through or something else, I'll just have to go on and try to repair them and hold them longer!

If he has any air forces left, I am watching for the epic air battles that are sure to ensue if for no other reason.

He's been saving up the Buffs and the Stringbags. I should see plenty.

I don´t think saving the Buffs will help too much! I gathered all I could at singapore. I hade them all there but you took most out in a single massive sweep getting something along 20-1. Can´t remember the exact details but I was pretty bummed out

You're right...but being already short of 3 CVs i'd be even more scared to get a damaged Palembang

Instead, Nells from Singkawang went for PTs at Batavia with no luck. Bettys from Kendari found TKs huddled around Darwin, and couldn't get a hit with just the bombs.
Ships moved into position for the feint near Sinkep Island. No bites today. The BBs are holding court out there so if any surface elements come it could be messy. All are LR CAPed plus the nearby Nates at Sinkep..
B-17s came for Balikpapan oil today. Luckily I'd installed zeros and had some CAP up, but only 4 planes. Still they took down 3 4Es and kept the attack to only 2 hits on the oil. I'll up the percentage CAP tomorrow.
At Macassar a DA gets a 1:2, but losses are not bad. I'll bomb from the air and go again after these units rest up.

At last the 2nd Palembang invasion goes in!
E DEI: Fairly large minefield cleared by AMcs at Balikpapan. He has gone through a lot of mines in some of these bases that are early targets. These boats pulled 117 out of here today and more are there to pull tomorrow.
DEI: Two divisions landed relatively safely today at Palembang. The escorts are not badly hit and will attempt to pull back tomorrow before unloading all supply. I expect another strong reaction. Multiple CL/DD TFs are covering the incoming path to Palembang with one big 3 BB TF one hex out. The mini-KB is hanging back near Sinkep and Linga.
This is a major relief, but the work is now cut out for these units. I'm still not sure they will take the base! The Allies have 650AV now and more will undoubtedly move in tomorrow as he tries to bait me into an early attack.
The auto-bombard went the way of the Allies, and the troops have some fatigue and disruption, so I'll wait until they are freshened up before attacking. No sense wrecking them and having to do this again.
Buffs show up and jump our Kates hitting the fields at Palembang. That was unfortunate. Too bad I didn't sweep, but i guess everything was busy LR CAPing ships. Tomorrow.

Tomorrow.

China: We're ready for an attack at Nanchang. After weeks of bombing and finally getting several divisions i place, the DA will go ahead tomorrow. A good chance to maul 10 Corps and 3 HQs.
In the air the AVG caught our bombing run in here today as the zeros were off sweeping. I was lazy and didn't cover this as he'd been out of the way for days. Only 5 planes lost, but still, not necessary. I hate giving the pilots free kills as well.

DEI: At Palembang I set both transport TFs to leave and run back to relative safety knowing there would be an attack of one kind or another. Well, I set one to stop unloading and forgot to turn this off on the other. The result was not pretty. The LR CAP of Nates over Pelembang didn't fly and the zeros were protecting the other retreating TF.
It sucks to lose these ships, but at least the troops are fully in. With some luck all of the DDs could make it back.
After some preparation from the air Macassar fell today. This opens up the air path to Java. Baseforces are on the way in already.
At Balikpapan there were 28 more mines cleared today.

At Balikpapan there were 28 more mines cleared today.

subs: Two DMS sent back to Singkawang clear mines and also might have hit the culprit behind putting them there. The Pampano takes two hits, one damaging.
Harusame puts 3 hits on Cachalot also.
I-170 hits an xAKL near Johnston Island, but no troops reported sunk.
DEI: Troops are resting up at Palembang and will bombard tomorrow to see what has changed. I get the feeling he's going to keep trying to build this up even though we've landed in force now.
Troops will give another try for Tarakan tomorrow.
China: The small 3 plane TB unit from Samah gets skewered by the AVG bombing Kwangchowan. I'll keep it out of the fray from now on. Now worth giving him kills for little gain.
Lots of bombing of troops. The encirclement of troops near Nanyang is in process and looks to be hard to avoid for the KMT. Our tanks are just quicker to the spot in the clear.
South of Nanchang the chase is on and our troops should catch the fleeing KMT for some more punishment.
PI: The 16th division is now driving toward Manila. I hope to catch a PA unit before we get there, but we might not be quick enough.

DEI: I finally got to some Buffaloes at Palembang. For the day about a 5 to 1 kill rate.
A good raid on Batavia today as well. Took out some various bomber and support planes.
Tarakan was DAed and the forts left at zero, but the attack only generated a 1:1. I'll leave it on and with some more air support, the base should fall tomorrow.

China: Managed to follow up well on the Nanchang troops that were evicted a few days ago. This is another battle costing the KMT over a month's worth of infantry. I'll have to count up the totals soon, but we're starting to really rack up the Chinese.
Not sure the Chinese attacking style Torsten chose is going to work out well for him. Especially if the troops at Nanyang are truly trapped and encircled, which they appear now to be. He's just moved the very large army previously besieging Sinyang into the Nanyang hex. We've got 3 brigades, a division and a tank regiment there with another brigade and three more tank units moving in tomorrow that were creating the encirclement, plus one tank unit coming in behind his units to turn that hex side red as well.
His AV was around 3200 at it's height in Sinyang, but was whittled down there to probably now somewhere between 2000-2500. With one fort and air raids hitting his troops tomorrow, I'm confident that the base will hold if he attacks. Several more divisions are two days away and will give some punch to begin crushing these units. I've got one tank unit one hex up the road to Sian to hold that hex in case he tries to move something in to break the siege.
If I can get these out of the way, send them back to respawn in Chungking, the door to the North should be wide open and Sian will be the next target.

subs: I-4 takes out an ASW DD near Lahaina. Hitting a lot of ASW ships around here. Odd.
DEI: The Palembang DA got a 1:1 but the disablements are bad, and I can't risk going again tomorrow. This is still looking iffy in spite of the 2 divisions and brigade here now. I'll see again in a few days. The forts did go to 1, and I'll try to keep them that way.
A few days back I asked Torsten what his evacuation plans were once the forts went below 2. He 'offered' a complete DEI ceasefire for a month in return for moving out of Palembang! [:-] Not acceptable. Not quite what I understood our 'agreement' to be. I know it's the game-breaker, but I can't break the game in another way to get that base. It's just not cricket.
So, I'll be going to plan B, which is moving soon into Singapore, holding onto my foothold at Palembang, and trying another DA if the troops repair a bit. Sucks, but I could have gotten it sooner, I know. Still, it's interesting to see what happens, and especially in a game where I'm not planning to light the world afire anyway after turn 2. Maybe I can still pull out a decent win in the DEI after a while. Java will sure be easier after what he now has in Palembang.
A DD in a fast transport took a mine hit and went down. Can't seem to get away from his mines.
China: At Nanyang Torsten does shock, but our troops hold! [&o]
This should seal the fate of this large KMT army of 17 Corps and 4 HQ. An armor unit is moving in behind them to close the hex side they moved in through and then all the rest 'are belong to us!' [8D]
Almost 700 infantry squads destroyed and 650 more disabled! After this the North is looking pretty wide open.
Also got the best Sonia field attack results in history at Kukong! 42 field hits from 23 Sonias! [:D]
PI: A few more fighters trying to be bombers knocked down over Antimonan.
Pacific: Nothing happening.
Burma: A cavalry unit is moving to take Tavoy. All other troops are stoping just outside Moulmein to wait for enough force and supply to move in.
Malaya: I may need to move more quickly here now. Troops are preparing to go over the causeway.

subs: I-4 takes out an ASW DD near Lahaina.

While I'd rather be using 2Es, while I am waiting the Sonia is proving useful for one thing; it carries a lot of bombs, although they are small, and therefore has a higher tendency to hit than the other 1Es in China. Over the past three turns bombing Kukong airfield it's averaging 35 field, 7 supply and 12 base hits for 22-25 planes. Not bad![/font] [8D]

SS Absoroka. A lumber carrier hit by I-19 during the war off of California. Here is Jane Russell standing in the torpedo hole! Also here is an interesting first-hand account of the actual torpedo attack.

RE: The Elephant Vanishes :: obvert (J) vs Historiker (A)
As usual, Love the pictures! [:)]
About China I might have an idea why he is doing what he is? Could he intentionally be killing off troops to help with supply? Even with the Burma road open there won´t be enough supply. But killing of a bunch of corps could pehaps help with the supply situation? That being said I have no clue why he attacked Nanyang. Attacking with Chinese doesn´t work to well.. He should have retreated to the forrested hex and forced you to attack instead.
Palembang is bad news indeed. I think you need to keep up pressure there to suppress the forts and stop recovering. I can´t really understand why Torsten would be asking for a months cease fire in exchange for withdrawal. Didn´t sound like the agreement you had. Good thing you declined. Are you bombing his troops from the air?

I find that the Sonja is a bad plane, maybe a notch better then the useless Ida. Are you finding different results?
JocMeister might be right, I am surprised to see his troop in open clear hexes. Are you bombing the crap out of them?
If all of this it true, what will be the effects down the road? Will the Chinese suddenly have a ton of troops coming down from the north? Starting to sound like Korea.
