Yes, and the issue with a bunch of these little TFs around is that in addition to drawing off your air strikes they could mess with your combat TFs and amphib TFs as they move in. If the combat TF reacts out or just doesn't connect with these, they could force your amphib TF to back off and thus waste a day being vulnerable offshore and hit by raids from Singapore.

Are you following one with the other as you move in or putting them in patrol spots?

Zero - CAP (CVs), LRCAP, and Sweep (I think they will not encounter many planes over Singapore as Brad will have his Buff on Escort to get his TBs through).

DMS - how many of them are in your transport TF headed for a possible landing at Mersing??

Transport TF - If Brad sends in some CL based TF to get into your transport, what warships do you have in them to counter?? They may get by your SC TF, so you need something there.

Heavy SC TF - Do you have one that you 'may' need to place south of Mersing as he will likely send in Force Z for a night time attack at Mersing.

Kaga and Co - You may have to have it placed so her Kates can range out to 7 hexes and be within 9 hexes of Mersing. Why?? To get a Force Z 'if' he comes for Mersing at Full Speed. How much will be devoted to LRCAP of transports??

Consider diverting a large Zero group from Takao to this area (Kota Bharu to help with LRCAP. Use your transports to airlift BF to Malaya. I set some of my TF at Full Speed to get those BFs across.

Edit - Vindicators have a transfer range of over 40 hexes. They came from a CV via Wake. Thus, they can be in the SRA in another day or two if he wants and with drop tanks, they can reach out to 10 hexes. They are old, but they carry a nasty punch. [:-] Beware!!

Yes, i've merged and recombined all my TFs.
Now Kaga, along with the CVL, are screened by 10 DDs and 2 CAs, while i have two SCTFs screening both the CVs and the transports. An Heavy one, with 2 Kongos and 4 CAs (along with 6 DDs) , and a lighter one, with 2 CAs, 1 CL and 4 DDs...

I'm waiting for Kota Bahru to be fully open and with an air HQ before starting sweeping Singapore. Don't wanna throw away my pilots with lots of scattered attacks. The thing i learnt in my other game is that Japan needs to always use the hammer...till you have that hammer on hand, it's better to play safe.

BFs are already moving towards Kota Bahru, but it takes time and the aviation support is very rare in this scenario...so i need not to overplace too many BFs in Malaya just to be without somehwere else

I'm planning to keep my Kates at 8 hexes from Singa, so that i won't be sucked into some death-CAP traps over there.
I'm also dispatching my subs in a defensive arc around Singa, in the hope of have some luck against Force Z

I tend not to use too much the "follow" order.... the lead TF is always a SCTF and that means that i can easily react, bringing with it the whole convoy!
Now i'm moving my TFs indipendently, trying to calculate their movements point and plotting every single waypoint...it is working so far

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Dec 10, 41

Well, at the end, my cowardice prevailed and i abbandoned the idea of a "retarded Mersing gambit"...sorry Micheal
I sent the main invasion TF towards Singora, while the smaller one, along with the two CVs and the BBs moved south towards Singaweng....

I sent 3 DDs to sweep Mersing....they reacted and moved towards Tandjoengpinang (south of Singa) where the enemy TKs were loading fuel to deny it to me....
We sunk there 5 TKs but then the swordfishes and some american DDs made their job and sunk 2 of my DDs....
My CVs wasted again their torps against useless AMcs that moved eastwards from Singa....[:@], while my Nells took off to attack his damned motorboats at Mersing...(lost 3 Nells!!)

Our recon rgt repulsed an attack south of Kota Bahru....but we're moving very slow...and the damned brits are managing to move southwards...

The Boise and Houston have finally been detected! They are moving east of Mindanao...right in front of my invasion TF....Zuiho and and CVE, along with 2 BBs are moving towards the area but i fear i won't have the time to save my invasion force...[:-]

Despite positioning a lot of DD flottillas near Manila, his ships are always escaping and i'm managing to sink just a bunch of them....

In China he attacked Ichang with a HUGE army....despite the air bombings my reinforced division was repulsed with heavy casualities... and now we've lost our first base in China...not a good start[:-]

Let's now hope to get Sinkawang so i can estabilish a base in NW Borneo...which will be very important for the future advances.... but i know the Force Z is there lurking in the shadows...

Today we managed to shoot down 8 of his planes...against 4 of ours...not bad...

Sweeps will start tomorrow against Clark Field, while our 14th Army will attack Lyngayen.

Another american CA is spotted near Tarawa....

the best news of the day is the great success of the last one of my Midget subs....a torpedo hit against a damaged BB in PH!!!! BANZAIII!!!! The heroic mini-sub is lost but he did a wonderfull job!

That disaster at Ichang really upsets me.... a division and a bde trashed for nothing.... how could 2 strong japanese units, behind 3 forts and helped by the air bombings suffer a 1-7 odds?? The first of a long series of bloody noses...me guess[:D]

At Ichang i was overconfident...i thought the chinese couldn't defeat a division behind 3 forts...lesson learnt!

So, the first thing to attend to in China is to make sure that your main cities that are subject to being attack have garrisons large enough to hold off any group of Chinese that can reach them before reinforcments can arrive. Make sure that your MLR is tight and strong. That's even more important than going on the offensive. But once you know where Steve's big stack is, you'll be better able to find isoalted Chinese positions that you can hit strongly.

If he's got a massive army at Ichang, then Chenghow/Sian sector should be fairly weak right now. Also, Nanning/Liuchow to the south of Changhsha should be weak. So, attend to your ring of bases within striking distance of Ichang while also gathering strong armies on either or both wings.

The Chinese have a hard time mainting fighters on the front lines due to lack of supply. If Q-Ball commits fighters to a base with low suplpy, he risks disablement and never being able to get the fighter airworthy again. He can handle fighters at Changsha and Chungking, but Sian, Ichang, Liuchow, Kweilin and Nanning should be different propositions altogether.

The Allied airforce can fight well defensively, but Japan has a chance at breaking the back of the RAF in 1942. RAF fighter numbers are so low that Japan can win a war of attrition. So attrit him even if you're not getting a sexy 3:1 or 2:1 ratio of kills. Keep the pressure up under circumstacnes as favorable to you as possible.

I know you're feeling pressure to move fast, especially as most advice given from the better players stresses speed. For what it's worth, don't sweat things too much. It's your first time with Japan and it's an entirely different beast from the Allied one. If it takes you a little longer to accomplish some tasks, so be it.

One thing I'll add, and I know you'll get tons of advice, is play your game. Speed is important, but speed also kills. If you find yourself making poor decisions in order to make a perceived deadline it will lead to problems. A well supported and planned advance is just as effective.

In China i'm still clearing the inner lines of my perimeter...wanna get rid of all those damned chinese units that keep on occupying my supply lines....
But yes, i'll try to manouver, i'll try to overwhelm him in the air...i'll try to do like Rader..."always the hammer".

Let's see... now the main concerns are Force Z (and the survival of Kaga and Ryuho) and the presence of Cl Boise and CA Houston in front of my Mindanao invasion fleet.... sweating...[8|]

I will add my voice to those more experienced above to just say, take a breath.

Playing the IJ is tough as you're on point every day for four months at least, and most often even longer. As you dictate the pace to the Allies, a good Allied player will react and mess with your timing. That is how it goes. Protect your forces first and foremost unless the goal is worth the loss, like Palembang.

At Ichang that was unfortunate, but he also took very substantial losses. Usually that army is around 2500 AV, so you got off lightly!

The best thing that could happen in China would be for him to get overconfident and attack you with one of those stacks. There is not enough supply and you can slow and maul those troops with air raids to the point they are ineffective, as you well know. But you want him to attack and not sit back in a defensive posture.

As for the Mersing try, you could also feint an invasion now that you've chosen not to land there. He will be ready and want to bite on something. Worth a try if you want to try to draw his forces out to be hit by your mini-KB and Netties. Keep the mini back from Singkawang though. That's awfully exposed and a wave of several SCTFs could break through to it from the Batavia area.

One other thing. Fast transport TFs with CL/DD combos work wonders for speed and better protection on many less well defended targets in the DEI. They can catch you up in a hurry and its hard for the Allies to react before a landing happens and the ships are gone.

No big deal. You can master this opening in a later game. I would then land the Mersing troops (5th Div plus support) at Kuantan and drive inland from there.

Edit - He has bought out an P-40E group from Luzon and send them to Singapore. Thus, I would move a Zero group from Takao over. You will need to LRCAP your transport landings anywhere on Malaya as he will probably move his BFs in northern Sumatra down to the base two hexes south of Medan which is a size 2 AF. He could use the Chinese transport planes to fly over an Air HQ to provide torpedoes.

Kuantan is a better springboard for Mersing - I know that Mersing is possible but Leapfrogging down is my way of achieving it without due risk. CAP and move. Still achieve Singapore early Jan. Watch a counter attack at Signora.

Also the 21Div can be ferried up river in China (with care - watch garrison req. and CAP)

A mixed day.

At Singkawang our landings started without opposition. Apparently he moved back Force Z (maybe to Palembang or Singapore); he didn't even send his bombers from Kuching. All my TFs were unmolested.
Now a consistent force is ashore and the base will fall tomorrow. Then we'll move in an Air HQ and we'll start to strangle Singapore and Palembang ....well, that's the plan anyway.

At Kota Bahru, finally the Air HQ has arrived, along with several base forces. In a couple of days we'll be able to start sweeping Singapore. A couple of missions from Blenheims escorted by Buffaloes were repulsed without any damage. Following Micheal's suggestion, a Zero full Daitai is now being moved to Kota Bahru. It will be supported by 2 Oscar Daitais in the reduction of Singapore air strenght.

For what concerns Kuantan, i'm still uncertain about a landing there...It's true that i can LRCAP, but at the same time i have not enough surface forces to prevent Force Z and the brit-ducth CLs to arrive and destroy my plans. At the same time, the roads around Kuantan are so terrible that my 5th Division will take forever to get out... really don't know...[&:]

The Imperial G. Division is arriving at Singora, along with elements of the 55th ID. The 21st and the 4th are already being shipped to Malaya.

The bad news come from Mindanao.
Boise and Houston, along with a TF composed around CL Marblehead moved towards Jolo and found my amphib TF which was moving a base force to conquer that crucial base. I had 4 DDs in a separate SCTF but they reacted towards the Boise, leaving an open door to the Marblehead.... my TF was sunk and the base force gone.

In SOPAC, despite the disaster of the last days (where the vindicators from Rabaul sunk 4 transports), we managed to conquer Kavieng.... a first step towards Rabaul!

In CENTPAC, we're getting close to Wake. In 2 days we'll land, while the KB is covering the invasion force.

An american CV is spotted near Makin, supporting a SCTF near Tarawa. Luckly we have hold our invasions there. Will wait for the KB to come down...



Overall not a bad day. I'm however concerned on how long is taking me to advance in the Mollucches (ambon and timor areas so to say)... I need fuel, i need supplies and i need base forces...but i don't have them at hand right now.... will have to wait... No rush, stay calm...i know i know...my mantra[:D]

Once again, good luck. Not being a JFB there's not much advice I can give, so I'll pretty much be a passive bystander here. Also, I don't plan on taking up the suggestion (John Dillworth's?) of drinking a shot for each Greyjoyism--that would kill most men. It would be fun for a while, though.
