Tavoy was bombed by 34 X B-29 and 12 X Spitfire VIII were along as escorts. The port was lightly damaged, there were a few secondary explosions and personnel casualties were moderate.
Bangkok was swept by 32 X Thunderbolt II and 33 X P-38J. The Japanese, not willing to give up air superiority without a fight threw 55 X Zeke, 29 X George and 11 X Jack at the intruders. It was a bloody day as 6 Thunderbolts were shot down(1 damaged) and 2 Lightnings were killed (2 damaged), but it was lopsided victory as the Japanese lost 43 X Zeke, 20 X George and 6 X Jack for their efforts.
Dili was raided by 34 X B-24D and there were some secondary explosions and very light troop losses.
Lautem was paid a visit by 127 X B-25J and 24 X Kittyhawk III. The airfield was subjected to heavy damage, there were many secondary explosions and casualties were moderate.
Buna was hit by 36 X B-17E and the AA fire damaged 2 of them. The port had light damage.
The IJA 29th Ind. Mixed Brigade, in the Krung Thep area, was pounced on by 69 X Liberator VI (2 damaged), 20 X B-24J (1 damaged), 41 X Mosquito FB.VI (2 downed, 1 damaged), 43 X B-25J (3 damaged) and 36 X Thunderbolt II who had to fight their way through 14 X Zeke. 9 of the Zekes were flamed for their troubles and the unit took very heavy losses. The 127th IJNAF Base Force was next up and 5 X Zeke tried to fend off 36 X Liberator VI (4 damaged), 15 X B-24J, 6 X Mosquito FB.VI (1 damaged), 8 X B-25J Mitchell and 18 X Thunderbolt II. The Thunderbolts made quick work of the Zekes as they were all shot down. The Japanese had very heavy casualties. Not willing to go down meekly the Japanese threw 20 X Frances at the 18th UK Division and inflicted moderate losses on the unit. An ineffectual Japanese artillery bombardment interrupted the afternoon.
Tavoy witnessed another Allied artillery bombardment of the Japanese positions and losses were thought to have been light.
“That's interesting,” says Dave as he reads the newspaper. “It says here that LT R Little is of the AVG is still the top Allied ace in the Pacific with 25 kills. What's strange is that he was KIA a while ago. 2 pilots of VF-2 on the CV Lexington, LT W Dean and ENS B Johnson, are tied for second place with 24 kills each. The Navy has been busy.”
Tokyo's response to the Red Army moving troops into the countryside of Manchukuo for “exercises” was less than positive. It fell just short of demanding that these formations return to their bases. Moscow's response is that the units need to rest before moving. “See, I told you that those rats in Tokyo would do nothing about our troops moving into the countryside,” Stalin hisses with a grin.
The Lucky 11 have a brand spanking new B-29 as of today. They will have a few training flights with her before the big bomber is declared ready for a flight overseas. The men are thrilled to have this big bird and can't wait to put her through her paces. Gill shares in the excitement, but her harbors fear about what comes next when they're in combat. The men know that the 8th Air Force has been suffering very heavy losses against the Germans. Of course there is always the possibility that they won't be going to Europe.
The generals and admirals discuss the plans for the immediate future of Pacific operations as FDR listens. “The key is to disrupt the supply lines from the SRA. To do this Morotai should be taken, followed by Davao. Next the PIs are up. Once this is accomplished we rush in air assets and set up bases for our subs. An eye can also be cast towards Hong Kong or some other point on the Chinese coast to tighten the noose, though it won't be critical. Once we hold Manila our planes can reduce Formosa, if we choose, and our fleet can range where it chooses. An added plum would be if the IJN sortied so we could polish it off as a viable fighting force. Of course the bombing of Japan will be a focus and if possible the route through the Russian bases should be kept on the back burner.” The man finishes and takes his seat at the back of the room. There is little discussion and FDR thanks everyone for their contributions. All leave then save General Marshall and Admiral King, who FDR talks to about his concerns.
Operation Hay Action was launched by the Germans. They will kidnap 40,000 Polish children aged 10-14 for slave labor in Germany.

Nanning was swept by 39 X P-38J and there were 20 X Zeke, 18 X George and a Tony on hand to provide the entertainment. A Lightning was damaged in the melee while 11 Zekes, 8 Georges and the Tony were shot down.
Tavoy had moderately light losses from 32 X B-29 and 12 X Spitfire VIII disrupting their calm morning. An Allied bombardment attack resulted in extremely light Japanese troop losses.
Bangkok underwent a fighter sweep consisting of 30 X Thunderbolt II and 25 X P-38J. 28 X Zeke, 39 X George and 13 X Jack contested the skies losing 18 Zekes, 21 Georges and 3 Jacks. 5 Thunderbolts went down, another damaged and 2 Lightnings were destroyed.
Palau was raided by 36 X B-24J and the port took moderate damage, there were many secondary explosions and personnel losses were very light. Another strike roared in made up of 12 X SB2C (2 damaged), 18 X P-39D (1 damaged) and 24 X P-47D. They added light damage to the airfield and light casualties.
The IJA Imperial Guards Division at Krung Thep, was jumped by 92 X Liberator VI (3 damaged), 31 X B-24J, 41 X B-25J, 44 X Mosquito FB.VI and 65 X Thunderbolt II. When the bombs stopped raining down and the dust settled the Japanese had sustained very heavy losses. The Japanese artillery caused light Allied casualties. An Allied assault gained a little ground at the cost of extremely heavy losses to both sides.
The 6th Chinese Air Base Force was attacked by 6 X Helen, who did no damaged to the already ravaged remnants of the unit.
Stick has the day off and he spends it relaxing after a large breakfast of powdered eggs, powdered milk and stale bread. If this is how we eat I wonder what the infantry gets on the line, he wonders. Maybe it's true that the Navy gets the best food, but I'd be scared to death in a storm, he thinks. He then nods off for a long nap.
Gil is rapidly customizing he radio position. He has hung a picture of Elaine over the tiny desk that he sits at. The plane seems to work just fine and after another couple of flights they will be leaving Mather Field for parts unknown. Today he conned Ham into letting him fly in the nose for a while and the view was breathtaking, though in combat plexiglass won't be offering much in the way of protection.
Sandy got a few more letters today and she sat outside reading them. She longs for Bill to return and prays that he isn't hurt.
The first V1 was launched today.
A single Tiger tank, Michael Wittmann commanding, destroyed 25 Soviet tanks and other vehicles.

The USN conducted a bombardment of Palau and the Japanese returned fire. The BB Arizona was hit once, the BB Tennessee was hit twice and the CL Columbia took 5 hits, The Japanese suffered very heavy losses. A strike of 8 X SB2C (3 damaged), 21 X P-39D (2 damaged) and 24 X P-47D added very light damage to the airstrip, a solitary secondary explosion and extremely light casualties.
A fighter sweep of Nanning by 39 X P-38J was engaged by 17 X Zeke, 15 X George and a Tony. 8 Zekes, 3 Georges and the Tony were destroyed at the cost of 6 Lightnings downed and 6 more shot up.
Ichang was raided by 60 X B-25J and 42 X P-40N escorting them. 20 X Jack, 7 X Nick and 23 X Tony met them and it was a bloody day for both sides. 3 Jacks were shot down (5 damaged), a Nick was destroyed (3 damaged) and 7 Tonys were killed (4 damaged). 5 X B-25J were downed and 11 more took damage while the Warhawks lost 23 planes. The airfield had light damage, some secondary explosions were claimed and casualties were light.
Bangkok was swept by 39 X Thunderbolt II and 22 X P-38J. They jumped the Japanese CAP, which was made up of 27 X Zeke, 33 X George and 18 X Jack. By the time the Allied fighters departed they had lost a Thunderbolt (another damaged) and a Lightning (1 damaged). They had killed 21 Zekes, 24 Georges and 2 Jacks.
Krung Thep was swept by 28 X P-38J and 22 X Zeke gave battle. 13 Zekes were destroyed for a lost P-38J and another damaged. Then 90 X B-29 arrived and they fought their way through 9 Zekes at the cost of 4 damaged bombers. A Zeke was damaged as the airfield took moderate damage, there were many reported secondary explosions and troop losses were light. The 18th UK Division was attacked by 3 X Frances and 2 were damaged as the British unit had very light casualties. The 3rd Indian Division was targeted by 9 X Helen and once more the Japanese only managed to cause very light losses.
Japanese aircraft. Then 21 X P-38J appeared and attacked 7 X Jack, downing 3 of them. The Japanese artillery did no harm and an Allied assault caused extremely heavy losses for both sides.
Kai Island was hit by 71 X P-38J and 2 X Kittyhawk III for light damage to the airfield, a single secondary explosion and moderately light casualties.
Dili's port had light damage, many secondary explosions and very light losses to the personnel when 36 X B-24J came calling.
Buna was bombed by 42 X B-24J and the airfield was moderately damaged, there were some secondary explosions and heavy casualties. 2 of the bombers were damaged by the AA fire.
The 5th New Chinese Corps was pounced on by 6 Helens and the Chinese had light losses.
Tavoy's defenses were tested and the attack was repulsed with both sides sustaining extremely heavy casualties.
Another test flight went off smoothly and Gil is anticipating an imminent departure for more dangerous places than California. He writes another letter to Elaine telling her that he misses her and that he hopes that she'll be there when he returns.
Sam hates this garrison duty. He tries to tell himself that it's better than attacking the Japanese in their fortified positions. He figures that some green outfit will be replacing the 25th once the division is back up to strength. Earlier in the day he wandered over to the airstrip that the See Bees continue to expand and listened to some music that they had on the radio. He asks them about fortifying the island and they told him that the airstrip is the priority.
Pete is overjoyed that Sylvia came home today with Pearl. She promises that she'll take it easy, but insists that she'll do the books. “That is I'll do them and order the things that we need in between Pearl's feedings and diaper changes. We'll be keeping the laundry pretty busy.” Pete is just happy to have his girls home so he readily agrees to everything that she says. Milt and Jac stop by that evening and after visiting with Pearl Milt heads into the pub for a nip.
Gene trudges home, tired and dirty. He had a few beers at the bar, but nobody spoke to him other than another one of the workers from the yard that he knows.

Once more Bangkok was swept and the Japanese had 22 X Zeke, 25 X George and 9 X Jack aloft. 28 X Thunderbolt II and 21 X P-38J screamed down on the Japanese who started to immediately tumble from the sky. As quickly as the one sided fight had begun, it was over and the Allied aircraft headed for home with a limping Thunderbolt and minus a destroyed Lightning. The Japanese lost 17 Zekes, 7 Georges and a Jack today.
27 P-38Js arrived over Krung Thep only to discover that the Japanese had no planes around. Later 18 X P-38J arrived and they found 7 X Zeke, 13 X George and 9 X Jack. The battle was joined and once more the Allied pilots and planes proved to much for the Japanese as 2 Zekes, 7 Georges and a Jack went down and a Lightning took some damage. Japanese artillery made lots of noise, but did no damage.
Buna was bombed by 48 X B-24D and it's airfield had very light damage, a couple of secondary explosions and moderate casualties.
Lunga's port was the target for 47 X B-24J. They did moderate damage, caused some secondary explosions and inflicted light losses.
The 5th New Chinese Corps had light losses from 9 Helens.

The SS Grouper, 71 miles SW of Nagasaki, spotted an AK steaming all alone. The sub proceeded to make a surface attack and hit her target with the deck gun 4 times and 3 fish also found the mark. The ship went down quickly.
Allied artillery at Tavoy inflicted extremely light Japanese casualties.

Ed's Old Gals arrived and unloaded a naval bombardment of Palau and the Japanese returned fire hitting the BB Oklahoma 5 times. The airfield had light damage, the port moderate, there were many secondary explosions and personnel casualties were very heavy. 26 X B-24J added moderately light damage to the port, caused some secondary explosions and very light casualties. Then 9 X SB2C (1 damaged), 21 X P-39D (1 damaged) and 20 X P-47D arrived and the hit the airstrip for light damage, a secondary explosion and light personnel losses. The Old Gals retire towards Ulithi after depleting their ammunition.
Ichang underwent a fighter sweep by 28 X P-38J and 17 X Jack, 6 X Nick and 19 X Tony rose to the occasion. 6 Lightnings were shot down and another was damaged while the Japanese lost 2 Jacks, 3 Nicks and 7 Tonys.
Tavoy was attacked by 123 X Liberator VI (4 damaged), 46 X B-24J, 48 X B-29, 16 X Thunderbolt II, 12 X Spitfire VIII and 11 X Corsair IV. The airfield was extremely heavily damaged, the port had light damage, there were numerous secondary explosions and the troop losses were very heavy. The defenders were also subjected to an artillery bombardment that resulted in heavy losses.
Bangkok was under a CAP of 26 X Zeke, 14 X George and 12 X Frank when 29 X P-38J jumped them. Once the carnage ended 9 Zekes were shot down (4 damaged), 5 Georges were splashed (1 damaged) and 5 Franks were killed while 7 Lightnings were destroyed and 4 others were damaged. The Frank's introduction to combat had an effect.
Krung Thep was raided by 26 X B-25J, 47 X Mosquito FB.VI, 62 X Thunderbolt II and 24 X P-38J who did moderate damage to the airfield, caused many secondary explosions and inflicted heavy losses on the troops. A short time later 104 X B-29 rained their bombs down on the airfield adding moderate damage, many secondary explosions and heavy personnel losses. Japanese artillery once more demonstrated their inept usage of ordinance as they made some noise and did no harm. The Allied big guns replied and they dished out very heavy casualties to the Japanese.
Koepang was bombed by 46 X B-24D and the port was heavily damaged, there were lots of secondary explosions and very light casualties. 71 X P-38J attacked the port and flak damaged 4 of them while they did light damage and caused very light losses.
Lunga was visited by 33 X B-24J who did moderately heavy damage to the port and caused many secondary explosions.
The 5th New Chinese Corps was raided by 6 X Helen and had very light losses.
The Allied TF 27 miles W of Tori Shima was attacked by 27 X Jill and the CAP of 85 X Hellcat drove them off, destroying 6 Jills. No Allied ships ever saw any of the Japanese planes on anything other than radar.
Kwajalein was raided by 35 X PB4Y (8 damaged) and 21 X P-47D. The airfield was lightly hit, a single secondary explosion was reported and troop casualties were put at extremely light.
Gil and the rest of the Lucky 11 are dismayed as they are issued Arctic gear. “I guess there must be some place on earth worse than the Aleutians,” Brownie says. The rest of the crew shrugs, but nobody can think of a place. Gil just stares at the gear and wonders what it'll be like to be stuck in the middle of nowhere and freeze to boot.
Sam watches another twin motored plane, a Betty so he was told, fly past. A couple of the guys give it the finger, but nobody bothers to fire on it. “Maybe if they see so many of us here they won't try to retake this place,” a replacement says. He's told not to bet on it. The See Bees continue to struggle to expand the airstrip, but the going seems to be painfully slow. Sam does notice, to his satisfaction, that some work is being done to defensive positions. He still has a hole to fight from, but as an infantryman that's good enough for him.
Stick was flying a LRCAP mission over the TF that was shelling Palau and he marveled at the amount of explosions they dealt to the Japanese defenders. He wonders what it must be like to undergo such a horrible shelling, by such big guns and he's glad that he's sitting in his cockpit of the Corsair. Of course the mission ended without any Japanese planes being seen.
The training cycle seems to be easing up and to Gunny that can only mean one thing, action. The 2nd Marine Division sit at Ulithi ready for almost anything.
Elba was invaded and captured.

The morning's tranquility over Nanning was shattered when 26 X P-38J dove out of the sun and slashed through the 19 X Zeke and a Tony that were on CAP. 5 Zekes and the Tony were shot down while a Lightning was lost and another was damaged.
Tavoy was attacked by 119 X Liberator VI (2 damaged), 40 X B-24J, 18 X Thunderbolt II, 9 X Corsair IV and 9 X Spitfire VIII and the airfield was very heavily damaged, there were some secondary explosions and troop losses were heavy. The Lucky 11 are rested and ready to go as their plane is given a last servicing before they depart for Alaska. They are scheduled to depart tomorrow morning. The prospect of Alaska has cast a pall over the crew and Jake tells them to relax that it's not as if it's the end of the world. “No just the _ss end of it,” replies Brownie. That raises a chuckle from the crew.
After work Gene hurries home without stopping at the bar. They told me not to go every day and that's just what I've been doing. The prospect of the spies no longer excites him as he's to tired from a long day of work.
Slim tells his boys to strip and clean their weapons because, “We could get the word at any time to go somewhere that we'll be called upon to entertain our Japanese friends.” The men grumble a bit, but know that Slim wouldn't keep after them if it wasn't for their own good. Gunny observed all of this and thinks that despite himself Slim has the makings of a born leader.

The SS Guardfish, 24 miles NW of Truk, attacked an extremely heavily escorted AK and hit it with a torpedo. As a result of the fire started by the attack Japanese soldiers were seen going into the water.
Nanning was swept by 24 X P-38J and they were opposed by 13 X Zeke of which 4 survived to tell of the lopsided fight.
Bangkok underwent a fighter sweep made by 20 X P-38J. 33 X Zeke, 10 X George and 7 X Frank rose to meet them and 10 X Zeke (2 damaged), 2 X George (1 damaged) and 6 X Frank were shot down at the cost of 1 P-38J destroyed.

The 18th UK Division, at Krung Thep, was hit by 23 X Frances who ran into 11 X P-38J. 6 X Frances went down and another took damage as the unit absorbed moderately heavy losses. Then the 3rd Indian Division was targeted by 4 X Helen who managed to inflict negligible casualties before being driven off by the Lightnings. As usual the Japanese artillery spent munitions and did no harm. The Allied guns caused heavy Japanese losses.
The Japanese ships about 151 miles SE of Kagoshima were attacked by 13 X PB4Y and 39 X P-38J. 3 AKs were hit by a bomb each, with 2 catching fire.
An Allied bombardment attack at Tavoy resulted in moderately heavy Japanese casualties.
At the preflight briefing the crews that are scheduled to leave this morning are told to leave their arctic gear in the barracks and just to get on the trucks that will deliver them to their planes. “Gentleman, your destination will be Pearl Harbor. Willy, the navigator is concerned because he'll have no landmarks with which to navigate and if it's cloudy taking any kind of fix will be tough to do. He tells Gil that he'll need him to “ride the beam” into Pearl once they pick it up. Now Gil is feeling the pressure. Once they are on the plane and rolling down the runway the jitters melt away and they get down to business. The bombardier and gunners gather and begin a card game before they drift off to various sports for some sleep. Gil dozes off, with his headset on, as usual.
Ed has made a formal request that the 2 BBs stationed at Wake Island be sent to him before the next big operation as their firepower will be needed. A pair of IJN MSWs encountered a mine field at Teloekbetoeng and started sweeping it.
The SS Jack, 28 miles S of Soc Trang, attacked a very heavily escorted AP and calmly proceeded to put 2 torpedoes into the target which caught fire and was heavily damaged.
Ed's Old Gals swung back into action with another naval bombardment of Palau and the Japanese returned fire hitting the following ships.
CA Vincennes 2 shell hits

The Japanese ground losses were placed at very heavy. At almost the same time 7 X SB2C (2 damaged), 23 X P-39D (2 damaged) and 22 X P-47D Thunderbolt added very light damage to the airfield.
Tavoy was bombed by 74 X Liberator VI, 24 X B-24J, 6 X Thunderbolt II and 5 X Spitfire VIII. At no cost to themselves the Allied planes inflicted very heavy damage on the airfield, a couple of secondary explosions were seen and troop losses were heavy. The Allied artillery caused moderate Japanese losses.
Krung Thep was attacked by 42 X B-29, 46 X B-25J, 40 X Mosquito FB.VI, 3 X P-38J and 41 X Thunderbolt II. The airfield took heavy damage, there were a great many secondary explosions and casualties were heavy. Once more the Japanese artillery fired and once more they did no damage to anything other than the foliage. An Allied assault was repulsed with both sides taking extremely heavy losses, though the Japanese did suffer more.
Port Moresby's airfield was heavily damaged by 48 X B-24J (1 damaged). There was a secondary explosion and personnel losses were heavy.
Lunga was hit by 108 X B-24J and 48 X B-24D. There airfield was subjected to extremely heavy damage, there were many secondary explosions 6 X Dinah were destroyed and casualties were heavy.
The 6th Chinese Air Base Force was struck by 12 X Helen and nobody suffered any losses.
Bangkok underwent a fighter sweep made up of 17 X P-38J and 2 of the Lightnings were shot down while another was damaged by the CAP consisting of 16 X Zeke, 10 X George and 10 X Frank. 11 Zekes, 5 Georges and 4 Franks were trashed.
At the crossroads about 78 miles W of Changsha a Japanese artillery barrage inflicted moderate Chinese losses.
A troop convoy will enter Petropavlovsk's harbor in the morning and disgorge men and supplies for a future joint Soviet/American operation.
The guys are exhausted from the flight to Pearl. When they get off of the plane the first thing they ask about is the latrine, followed by the location of the mess hall, and the barracks where they can shower and sleep. Gil is relieved that they didn't get lost. Willy gives him a friendly poke in the ribs, a smile and a wink. “Sure beats the crap out of Alaska,” he says to Gil. All of the Lucky 11 believe in one another and they work well as a team.
The news hits with a shock and Red shows the message to Cookie who says, “He hasn't done wrong by us so far, but this going in on something sight unseen is risky. How about we offer him a piece of the action? If he agrees then we go for it and if he balks then we pass.” Red agrees to this plan and he sends a message back to their lawyer in Honolulu. Now only time and the bank will tell if they have bought more land or not.
Gene's mother is concerned with him. “You are starting to spend to much time drinking beer after work.” He tells her not to worry and that he's a big boy now. Nobody has approached him and he has developed a taste for beer while waiting.
Sandy wasn't disappointed as she has 4 letters from Bill in her possession. Dave is happy also as some parts that he's been waiting for have finally arrived. He's busily talking to the freight agent, “This darned war is killing me. How long can I keep jury rigging stuff to keep the old crates on the road?”

At no cost to themselves the Allied planes inflicted very heavy damage on the airfield, a couple of secondary explosions were seen and troop losses were heavy. The Allied artillery caused moderate Japanese losses.

The airfield took heavy damage, there were a great many secondary explosions and casualties were heavy.
Cherbourg was attacked by the Americans.

Yesterday Gil was leaving the beach when he ran into a group of submariners who were billeted at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. They persuaded him to join them for a drink. Gil was never a boozer, but he agreed to join them “for just one.” Today he awakened with a hangover that was awful. He also feels like he has cotton in his mouth. He looks around and has no idea where he is when suddenly a Shore Patrol jeep pulls up to him. “Hey pal you look lost. Need some help?” Gil replied that he had no idea where he was, but that he needed to get back to Wheeler. “Hop in and don't say a word about this to anybody as I wouldn't want our bad reputation to be ruined,” the man said. Off they went and when Gil arrived at the barracks he found some of the Lucky 11 looking like he felt. Gil told them that he remembers nothing after having some drinks and that he caught a right back to the base.

Pete is talking to some of his regular customers and of course the topic is the war. What they all are trying to understand is why the Japanese have been allowed to remain in such close proximity to Oz. In the meantime mother and baby are busy with another diaper change. The laundry is being kept busy as Pearl is a prolific diaper dirtier. She is still keeping her parents from getting a decent night's sleep.

The 2nd Marine Division is fit and ready to go, but they get no orders. Slim went swimming with the rest of his guys and the exercise helps to relieve the nervous tension.
Sam once again watches a Betty circling above and he wonders if the Japanese really know the situation on Tori Shima from these recon flights. A division to defend this little place will certainly not make it an easy nut to crack. Now if they only had some coastal artillery.

Port Moresby was raided by 33 X B-17E who managed to do light damage to the port, trigger some secondary explosions and inflict very light losses.
The 6th Chinese Air Base Force had no losses despite the efforts of 9 Helens.
Krung Thep witnessed the Japanese artillery inflict very light losses on the Allied troops.
At Tavoy the Allied gunners caused moderately heavy Japanese casualties.
At the crossroads W of Changsha the Japanese artillery scared the Chinese into staying down.
The Japanese unit, under Chinese pressure, pulled back from it's positions 83 miles SW of Sian.

Red and Cookie have a new partner and more land titled to them. “Taking in the lawyer was a good move,” says Cookie. “Now our debt is lower, we have more land and our legal fees have disappeared. If only this war would end.” Red is only half listening as he watches Lucky racing around on the deck.

Krung Thep was raided by 36 X B-29 and the Japanese had 3 X George and 8 X Irving on CAP duty. The Georges never managed to get into the action and the Irvings had 6 planes damaged in the halfhearted attacks that resulted in a damaged bomber. The airfield was moderately damaged, there were some secondary explosions and moderately light personnel losses. The 18th UK Division was bombed by 9 X Helen, 2 of which were damaged, and casualties were light. The 25th Indian Division was hit by 9 X Frances (1 damaged) and had no losses. The 3rd Indian Division was pounced on by 11 X Frances (1 damaged) and absorbed very light casualties. Japanese artillery caused extremely light Allied losses.
Dili was the target for 35 X B-24J and 42 X P-38J. The port was lightly damaged, there were a great many secondary explosions and casualties were light.
Palau had it's airstrip bombed by 29 X B-24J and the AA fire damaged 2 of the bombers. The damage done was moderate and a couple of secondary explosions were observed . Later in the day 12 X SB2C (1 damaged) and 19 X P-47D caused a secondary explosion at the port. The 2nd Amphibious Brigade was targeted by 52 X P-38G (3 damaged) and 18 X P-47D and the troops suffered no casualties.
Port Moresby was hit by 45 X B-24D and there was a lone secondary explosion for their efforts.
The IJA 36th Ind. Mixed Brigade, defending Tavoy, was jumped by 68 X P-38J (4 damaged), 48 X Thunderbolt II (3 damaged) and 7 X Spitfire VIII. The unit sustained very heavy losses. Then the 36th Ind. Mixed Brigade was the unfortunate recipient of the attention of 33 X B-29, 105 X Liberator VI, 41 X B-24J, 57 X B-25J (4 damaged), 46 X Mosquito FB.VI, 24 X P-38J Lightning, 78 X Thunderbolt II (1 damaged), 11 X Corsair IV and 12 X Spitfire VIII. The ground shook beneath the pounding and by the time the dust had settled the Japanese had absorbed additional very heavy losses. Allied intel experts figured that the Japanese unit was left in a state of being combat ineffective. An Allied assault caused a further reduction to the Japanese defenses and both sides suffered extremely heavy losses.
The 5th New Chinese Corps had moderate losses due to 9 X Helen attacking.
The SS Haddock, 78 miles N of Jesselton, located Japanese ships on her radar and she proceeded to intercept them. 5 X PGs were escorting an AP, which the sub hit with 2 torpedoes. The target was heavily damaged and burning as the sub made good her escape.
Japanese gunners inflicted extremely light casualties on the Chinese at the crossroads near Changsha.
A Grace loitered peeking at Tori Shima and Sam and members of his squad tried to identify the plane type as it flew by them repeatedly. “Not the same as they've been spying on us with lately,” says one of the guys. It's the same old boring stuff as Sam leads a patrol along the beach in their area. He wonders if the Japanese could really surprise them with an attack. He doubts it as flying boats are almost always heading out or returning from patrols, the Corsairs keep a watch on the skies, the USN lurks and the base's radar probes always searching. He still feels that it never hurt anyone to be ready for whatever may come.
The Palawan moved to the wharf at Guam and began loading supplies. As usual the crew speculate where they're bound for this time. Some of them think that Red should know, but he tells them that stuff like that only the captain knows. “He'll tell us when we're on our way I expect,” he answers them. Lately he's been having nightmares about the sinking back in the early days of the war.
Bill is busy shuffling paper work and he's feeling tired so he heads to his bunk. He knows that he didn't write a letter to Sandy today, but the truth of it is that he's to tired and there's nothing to say that he hasn't said many times already.
FDR is informed of the impending attack on Palau. The briefing continues with the subject of some quick grabs of Japanese bases on the PNG coast. “How many of these we take depends on the Japanese response or lack of one,” the captain states very blandly. What FDR wants to know about is when the supply lines from the SRA to Japan will be severed. The answer is that the last pieces to the puzzle are now falling into place.

After having detached the CL Denver and the DDs Philip and Schroeder they made for Hollandia. An AK was caught there and repeatedly hit by the ship's guns, which sent her to the bottom. The ships will now rejoin the CVTF loitering to the NE.
Ed's Old Gals poured a naval bombardment into Palau and the BB Tennessee was hit by the Japanese 4 times, chipping some paint. The port and airfield were lightly damaged, a secondary explosion was observed and troop losses were very heavy. An air strike of 11 X SB2C, 32 X TBF and 13 X F4F-4 did light damage to the port and caused very light casualties.
Bangkok was under a CAP of 31 X Zeke, 15 X George, 7 X Jack and 18 X Frank when a sweep of 50 X P-38J dove on them. 17 Zekes, 10 Georges, a Jack and 9 Franks were destroyed while 9 Lightnings went down and 3 others took damage.
Krung Thep was swept by 38 X Thunderbolt II, but there was no Japanese opposition. Then 37 X B-29 and 36 X B-24J (2 damaged by flak) came on and caused moderate damage to the airfield, some secondary explosions were claimed and personnel casualties were moderately heavy. Another strike made up of 34 X B-29 appeared and added light damage to the airstrip, a couple of secondary explosions and light losses. The 3rd Indian Division was attacked by 5 Helens, 1 of which was damaged, and had extremely light losses. The Allied troops underwent an artillery bombardment and had light losses. Allied artillery caused heavy Japanese losses.
Port Moresby was raided by 30 X B-24D who caused moderately light damage to the airfield and light troop losses.
Lunga had it's airstrip lightly damaged by 25 X B-24J. There was a single secondary explosion and light casualties.
The IJA 49th Division, at Tavoy, was attacked by 37 X Liberator VI (1 damaged), 6 X Mosquito FB.VI and 11 X Thunderbolt II. The unit sustained heavy casualties. At almost the same time the IJA 36th Ind. Gunny and Slim finished their chow and took a walk, enjoying a smoke and some talk. The training has stopped, but nothing seems to be in the pipeline. “Typical of the Corps to get us wound up and then leave us waiting,” says Slim.
Sam is bored out of his mind. He keeps telling himself that boredom is better than combat. The replacements continue to flow to the 25th Division and now the NCOs are busily integrating them into the various units and getting them up to speed. It wasn't so long ago that Sam was a raw recruit. Now he's a veteran of more battles than he'd care to think of. “It's the next one that scares me half to death,” he tells some of the other NCOs from the company. “The Japs can't just let us have this island so close to them. Gene was so tired from working a double shift today that he went home, showered and fell into his bed. He fell asleep as soon as his head hit the pillow and he didn't wake up until his mother woke him the next morning. He grabbed a quick breakfast and then hurried back to the yard. “He's working to hard, to many hours,” his mother says to his father. His father says that it's better to be dead tired from work than dead fighting overseas.
