CVs SE of Tokyo - he knows that you don't have enough Zeros yet to have upgraded the Claudes on Honshu. Thus, any Nell/Betty set on naval attack will get shredded. He may think you will have to send any transports from Tokyo to Truk further west and he 'may' have Boise and/or Houston over in that area to intercept. He may be hoping that you divert part or all of KB north to go chase after his CV while he has another CV head into the Solomons area to stop your invasions. He has three CVs to use right now. The Yorktown shows up at the end of the month.

But i have 60 Netties at Tokyo...no zeros, you are right, but if they took off the risk for him could be really high... well, they didn't...but is it worth to risk a carrier staying for 3 days in Range of Netties from Japan HI?
Yes, it's only 1 CV i guess.... don't know where are the other 2...
It is probably one CV. If i was You i will send everything capable of flying in air. Even if he shot down most of Your planes some can have luck.
With 1 CV CAP you have big chance that attack will reach ships. Losses going to be high but reward is also big.

Already done that. My Netties simply refuse to fly [&:]...probably because they don't have any zeros that can escort them....will see if i'm able to spare some of them from Luzon...

Oh sorry.I was hoping that they will fly and we see few torpedo hits.
Maybe next time.
In My game my bombers are usually not refusing to fly. But it can depend on many factors. Weather, commander skill, morale, experience of pilots, detection lvl, good dice roll.

EDIT:
They never refuse when enemy was have only surface force and rage was similar. Vs Enemy CV they always have escort.

CHINA:

I'm pretty confident that we should be able to deal with the "partisans" that are threatening our inner supply lines within the end of the month. More supplies will be shipped to China and we'll devote more efforts into the air war there, so to support our troops.
I need to clear the whole Southeastern Area, so that i can committ more forces for the front lines near Changsha.

Set up a CS Convoy between Shimonoseki and Shanghai. To Shangahi with supplies and return with Resources. How big and with what ships, I'll let you decide. Mine is with about 25k in cargo capacity. Use Waypoints that have your transports stay in shallow ocean hexes. Under Waypoints, change it from No to Yes so they return along the same path. This will help your poor DC on your PBs doing the escort if attacked by a sub.

I use a second convoy that I have to manually manage to go from Nagasaki to southern China to drop off Supplies and then over to Formosa to pick up Resource to bring back to Nagasaki. Rinse, Repeat!

Concerning the CV, try a Netty group on night torp attack. They might get lucky.

Also vector subs in, of course. You could move the reinforced mini KB into the Philippine Sea and bait him with a convoy, but frankly that's probably what he wants as it will slow you down.

I won't let those CVs distract me.

The war goes on, and the thrill is heating up!

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Dec 19, 41

More sweeps over Rangoon today. we exchange a decent 3-2 in his favour. But i am looking for attrition, so far so good.

Our Paras managed to take an almost undefended Port Blair. very good. Now a base force will be transported in and a infantry battallion will soon follow.

Tavoy is conquered and now we're approaching Moumein with a decent road.

No sweeps over Singapore cause of bad weather. Tomorrow we'll try again.

Our Kuantan invasion force is getting closer. Tomorrow we'll end upo at 2 hexes east of Kuantan, covered by Kaga group and by 2 SCTFs.

In China he's messing me up in the south, with several corps approaching my almost undefended coastal cities. Urgent measures are taken....

The CS convoy from Shagai to Japan had already been estabilished...resources are flowing to Japan from Korea, China and Manchuko...hopefully soon we'll be able to suck also from DEI-SRA[:)]

KB is approaching Rabaul with the invasion force.

Allied CVs are moving east again from their position south of Tokyo...far from netties range

I just pulled up the game to see if you have a possible counter move. You do!! [:D][:D]
Chichi-jima has an AF 2(0), so all you need to do is get an Air HQ there. The 12th Air Flotilla HQ is at Oita on Kyushu (15 hexes away), but needs 63 PP to change commands. The Tina group at Kagi on Formosa has a range of 16/20. Move them to Oita and let them fly in the Air HQ. However, the actual torpedo capable part of the Air HQ has to go in by ship so you may need to form a Fast Transport TF with DDs to get it there. "IF" he still lingers and you get the rest set up, you could fly in the Zero, Nell, and/or Betty to surprise him.

[:D] Oh Micheal, you're da man!!!!

but he's already moving away...he's now south east of Hokkaido... too late! and i'm using my Tinas for the paras operations against Port Blair (the Topsies cannot reach Port Blair from bankok) so i cannot do it... but the idea was juicy!!!1 [:)]

Overall i can say that i think i can overcome the retards i've accumulated so far. if i manage to get Kuantan and Palembang within the next 7 days and with the upcoming operations against Mindanao and Menado i think i can be in a decent position by the end of 1941...

Too bad. [:(]

File it away as something to do a little bit later in the game and also move in another BF (Aviation Support 24). He may try to raid that area again months later as he may thing he can get by Marcus Island (AF 1) and raid those shipping lanes with a SC TF or another CV raid. I can show you how to change the Command of a base to "General Defense" later so those at Yokohama could fly over. I did so for some of the bases in the Kuriles to allow home island Restricted (R) air groups to fly up there if needed.

Note to self - if you play Scen 30 (DBB) as Japan, move this Air HQ here and send in supply early in game.

Bloody day

Post by GreyJoy »

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Dec 20, 41

Well...really a bad day.

I had a amphib TF heading for Singakwang with Air HQ and base forces. The TF was escorted by a strong SCTF, composed around 2 CA and 2 CLs.
I know the RN and the Ducth navy was at Palembang but i was pretty confident: the jap CAs and CLs can easily ruin the AFB's wet dreams.... right? ...no, wrong!
Brad sent not less than 3 SCTFs against my shippings... my Cruiser performed bad, both at day and at night...not a single torpedo hit...not a single 20cm cannon hit.... more or less a disaster!
We ended the day with 3 DDs sunk, 2 CAs and 2 CLs in sinking conditions and we probably only scraped the paint of his old cruisers... bad dice and rolls, really.

Then we attempt to suprise him in Burma, with a paradrop on Pegu...only a small base force was spotted yesterda.... ahahahahah, result? 2 para regiments trashed for nothing! We found the bloody Gurkas there....

The only good news came from the skies. Our sweeps over Manila and Singapore achieved a solid 3-1 in our favour, with 40 enemy planes shot down against 17 of our own. good.

Our invasion TFs for Kuantan are ready to land tomorrow. Tanaka is leading the covering force...let's hope for the best. Strong CAP ordered over my ships, with Kaga guarding their back. Kates have been unloaded at Kota Bahru and Netties have been activated at Saigon...

In the souther sea his naval forces got another small amphib TF of mine....[8|]

It's incredible to think that we're already losing the naval war.... i am already short of 3 CAs and 3 CLs....[:@]

The CA Ashigara won't make home... 70/53/13... pretty done.
CA Maya is feeling a bit better but she has 40 flooding dmg and we's really at risk.... and his subs are lingering there...

Oh, pretty strange that none of my subs manage to intercept those bastards...they were placed all the way from palembang to Singaweng... bad luck here i think

Ashigara has a decent chance if she is not on fire. Unlucky but the RN ships are of higher exp than the Dutch and USN. Also have you checked the exp levels of all your combat ship captains? Some are pretty crappy to begin with and should be changed, it only costs a couple of PPs for each change.

In my game v Historiker the same tactic of multiple CL TFs followed by one with CAs did very well against the IJN. I think the multiple battles you had to fight made your ships perform progressively worse. After I experienced this a few times I began using only multiple SCTFs within a few hex range on patrol and react, and they did better.

You're very good at feints and traps, and I think if he's going to throw the kitchen sink in like that, next time you have to bait him and lead him into a fight you want to have. The BBs would help, as will the Netties once you set up Singkawang.

Don't forget the little things like....move a group of 4 DMS from Takao to Truk to be able to sweep mines in the South Pacific. I just found out in my game that they are needed there. I've forgotten this small thing every time as Japan until I realize I need them there.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Dec 21, 41

Another disaster strikes above our mighty fleet.
The british capital ships arrived again at Singawang, smashing through the undefended convoy that was unloading (undefended after the battle of yesterday where 2 of our CAs and 2 more CLs were put out of action). Obviously it's a carnage. Once again my subs didn't even spot the enemy arriving or going back...

Then our invasion fleet approached Kuantan.... our BBs did well in screening the transports, but then, after sinking the Exeter, decided to move back to Saigon to reload ammos...damn! Half of our LRCAP was targeting the BB TF!!!!.... during the day the enemy arrived in waves...and my CAP was too little to stop them....2 of my CAs ate 2 fishes each and one more got hit by a bomb.... The transports unloaded safely so we can say that the fleet did her job....but the price was really really high! Now i have 6 CAs out of action and ready to sink!!![:o]

We swept Manila and today we achieved good results...the defenders are becoming weaker and weaker every day... we achieved a good 64 to 20 today in the air!

Force Z is retiring to Batavia...unmolested... Singawank AF is closed... but i need to keep on pushing...no matter the cost....BANZAI!!!!!

Lots of transports approaching Manila...he's trying to resupply it by sea!!!! gotta close the gap asap!

what else?

Tomorrow we'll land at Rabaul, screened by the KB...Shortland was conquered empty....
No sign of enemy's CVs...

I'm pretty pissed with my cruisers...yes, i checked the captains...they are all good.... Tanaka was leading the TF that got struk by his torpedo bombers...he didn't even engage in surface action...simply leaving the BBs doing the job....and now he's out of an active command....[8|]

On the positive side, you gave much better than you got in the air.

And most of those planes you shot down of his were over unfriendly ground/waters.

Remember, to bring the "hammer" every time. And if a nut looks too hard to crack, bypass it and move on. If Q-Balls deploys his troops too far forward, he's dooming them to rot in a POW camp once you've cut them off.
