Sorting out day 2:
SS Albacore sights CA Atago; she is heavily damaged. Albacore misses with a four fish spread and dives. USS South Dakota detaches from her carrier task force and merges with Willie "Ching's" surface attack groupmformed of CLs Cleveland, Columbia, and Montpelier. Six DDs provide the screen. The TF is ordered to pass NE of Buka and find crippled IJN capital ships using the South Dakota's radar and hopefully fires from IJ warships. What ensues is a running night engagement with a rear guard of at least nine destroyers. The first engagement sees Ching's TF close on the group sinking two and setting a third on fire. The DD Bagley is hit by a long lance and sinks also. It is a full moon in clear weather through the engagement. A third Jap DD is set on fire soon after and there is no effective return fire. They will meet again one more time in the night and score a couple of more hits with no additional damage to our ships. Reports from "Ching" indicate 2-sunk with 3 on fire. Port Morseby based B24s and B25s hit Rabaul's port and air fields. They do moderate damage to the facilites and catch a Zero on the ground. They shoot down another Zeke on the way out. One group of Liberators hits Buka. They get 60 base hits and report 23 Jills, Zeros and Judys destroyed on the ground. Rabaul is hit three more times in the morning by Liberators seperated from the raid and score several more hits. The weather over Rabaul is severe storms, probably covering suspected ships seeking shelter from yesterday and the target of the Mitchells. Gasmata is hit only for its close proximity to the battle and we get a report of Zero destroyed on the field. Kavieng is hit by the better than half a group of B24s and score 70 plus airfield related hits. Its raing hard there and no reports of IJN aircraft on the ground, yet the airfield icon is clearly visable for the first time in weeks. The morning progresses and Searching Helldivers relay the position of a Jap carrier(s). 43 Helldivers arrive to find no CAP and the 70 plus escorting fighters observe the end of CV Hiyo, CL Noshiro, and CA Atago. In Heavy rain search aircraft spot IJN CAs 50nm due north of Hiyo. 65 attack aircraft arrive before noon with only a squadron for escort. There is no CAP. CA Kumano-on fire heavy damage. CA Maya-on fire heavy damage, CA Mikuma-on fire heavy damage. CA Mogami-on fire, DD Maikaze-on fire. In many small afternoon attacks on IJN destroyers around Rabaul and Buka we will set 8 more on fire. Orders for the next day do not include a pursuit of Hiryu and Soryu to the north west. Priority will be given to beach head support and escort duty for Essex and Yorktown II. Should we be able to refuel overnight and aircraft scattered all over the Solomons return to their ships we may sail after them with four CVs, three CVLs, a fast BB and cruiser covering force.

We have a huge FUBAR at Wood. The transports hear of a surface threat and haul at flank NE towards Jap islands and Truk. The slow flat bottomed LSTs make incredible speed to. The carriers also evac the area, at least towards friendly lines. We attempt to sort this out and issue a ton of orders, really wishing for some PPs to relieve some body with. We get some sinking sounds during the replay at strange times to. Well we have not sunk a whole lot of ships in the first place so everything is still pretty new and fun. Anyways, there is some interesting info from some recently posted Hudsons running naval search patterns. The map is below. What we suspected were Hiryu and Soryu have cleared our search arcs as our tenders also split the beach head so our float planes could not stage in. We actually thought ahead on that one as the boots on the ground refuse to attack the hex. Fatigue is suspected. The division is at 46 or so. The CO also was forced far out to sea by the scare. I'm going from fell'in groovy to sweaty palms.

West Coast: One possibly two IJN subs reported off San Diego, its been some time since they have appeared here. ASW DEs sent to investigate.
NoPac: SubDiv A reaches patrol zones off Japan.
CenPac: Orders changed for retiring task forces from operation Wood, IJN resupply TFs are in the Marshalls. We may take a peek. OpWood transports back at the beach but have no time to unload anything today. To top it off a Jap sub puts a torp in a big transport carrying parts of base forces. CVEs still providing air cover. Essex and Yorktown II are exiting the Coral Sea. Jap subs are an infestation in the Solomons and additional DDs are broken off for ASW duty. We do land many hits on the sub at the beachhead and one off Munda.
SwPac: IJN TF suspected flaged by Yamato are spotted headed NW 50nm due east of Babar.
Burma: P51s and lightings hit the fields over Mandalay. There is alot of conflicting information on damage to the japs but we lose one Mustang, no Lightnings and claim 16 victories. We are contemplating a 200 plane fighter sweep to be followed by a large bombing raid within the week.
Columbo: BB Revenge still at 13S-75F-25E but I believe she has been refitted and is 37% towards her first floatation repair.

NorPac: USN subs check out Saporo and other Japanese ports.
CenPac: The Japs have resupplied their Marshall Island redoubts. Two fresh divisons unload at Pearl Harbor and await orders.
SwPac: Base forces and armor units unload at Wood. We will only stay another 24hrs, then its up to the seabees and engineers to get a strip open. The boots are still fatigued and will not begin the campaign up the island for the real prize for several days. I doubt he will risk reinforcement at Kvieng.
Columbo: BB Revenge has 294 repair pts and is at 42%.
Burma: While somewhat tired, moral is good and we order more sweeps and raids in Burma.

I write a long blurb for the AAR and it gets lost when I upload. Go to bed, wake up and try again...no internet....two days pass, Verizon girl shows up, goes in cable box on the side of the house and presses secret piss off your customer reset button. Back to the war.
India: HMS Revenge at 61%. Vengence dive bombers, long held back in the naval attack role begin to hit ground targets with hope of putting more Oscars and Tojos on long range CAP. Allied air forces continue to sweep and bomb central Burma trying to close airbases and allow small ground attack missions in the Mandalay area. The two divisions of the Chineese 11th army group trapped in Burma have recovered to full strength and will participate in the Lashio offensive in '44 adding some good AV. We get some good hits on IJN subs trying for tankers from the middle east.

CenPac: Withdrawing PBYs are replaced in the Gilberts and PBY Libs begin to stage back in. Fleet carriers from OpWood close on Pearl as well as the surface combat elements. The 6th Div is almost unloaded at Pearl to join the 1st Cav recently arrived.
SoPac-SwPac: At OpWood the Infantry and armor are almost ready to move. I Corp HQ should begin to fly in shortly as the strip is almost ready. Sixth Army HQ may join them. The Alabama makes port and begins a three month repair pierside in Australia before she can sail back to Pearl for the more serious damage. She is probably out till fall '44. Essex and Yorktown II were diverted to larger facilities but may be out for some time as well. Heavies fly over anything we suspect may hold IJAF and IJN aircraft in New Guinea and surrounding islands. We hope to launch OpLatch and OpBlade before new years.

Very little to report..
33rd Infantry Division awaits transports to forward staging areas; more anglo-allied troop ships are sailing up the Baja coast. Subs scoring some kills on smaller AKs and a PB off Japan. Strip at OpWood should be ready tomorrow (97%). I wish I could relieve the division commander on the ground; poor people skills and marginal combat skills. No more ships of the invasion fleet remains at the beachhead except a badly damaged AK. We get a couple of more IJN a/c on the ground at Buna so we fly again tomorrow with fresh squadrons. The B24Ds will take the airfield and the Js will go after the troops. BB Revenege repairs 5% towards a hull pt.. I think. We down some more of the IJAF in central Burma. I hope I am at least grinding down his pools of fighters and getting an ace or two. The Chinese fighter group training around Delhi now have a full complement of 36 P40s. Their experience as squadrons is low to mid 50s with some better air to air skills. They will continue to train (maybe a few "live" missions) in the rear till spring in Burma.

CenPac: More submarines added to Sub flotilla B at Midway. Sub spotted off Pearl will get some attention. Resupply ships embarking for outlaying islands in the central Pacific and the Hawaiian islands. More Navy Libs stage into the forward areas.
SoPac-SwPac: We withdrew many transport squadrons early from Asia and as a result was able to tour the front lines with a critical eye again. The 41st Division CO, the 766th Tank Bn CO, the 767th tank Bn CO have all been relieved as orders arrive to march north and take Kavieng. Advance party from I Corp HQ due at the newly created strip in the morning at Namatanai. US and New Zealand army fighter squadrons also stage in. USS Alabama will not see action for along time, she will be pier side for three months before setting sail for the rear. Supply reaches Darwin. We hope for bad weather there for a couple of days.

CenPac: All the intact fleet carriers reach Pearl and undergo some quick repairs. Heavy news reaches us in the Op report. It simply states the Essex's engine room is open to the sea. She sinks with minor damage. Amphib and support TFs will stagger in over the next week. Jap subs are hunting off Pearl for them. We escalate the ASW war there.
SwPac: Yorktown II reaches harbor in Australia for some repairs before setting sail for larger shipyards east. I wish I had let the far less damaged Essex stay with her. I Corp HQ is arriving at Namatanai. PBYs also stage in to give us better search cover at the base. More engineers will arrive in several days to expedite the process.
CBI: We stand down today to recover and reinforce the squadrons at the forward fields. Replacement aircraft and squadrons stage in.
China: The IJA recons by fire the two most volatile approaches to Chungking. The counter battery is sound. A full Chinese group of P40s is now available at Dehli for deployment. Moral for the remaining squadrons in China is in the 20s. They stage far to the rear and stand down.

SwPac-SoPac: The morning of the 27th we should be ready to make the final advance on Kavieng.
Burma: Another good day in the air as an experienced P38 squadron sweeps central Burma with no losses downing half a dozen Tonys and Oscars.
India: BB Revenge should heal one point of hull damage today.

Only a question before I get booted:
Transport aircraft only transport fragments to destination then switch to supply. Example: I Corp HQ is strictly a personel unit. I have half at the destination and half at the transport AF. I set the transports to fly them and when I get the turn back they are back on supply. Any ideas?

Game: Terry's grasp of tactics and TWIT HQs oomp loompa cycle is uncanny.
NoPac: Additional sumarines are added to SubDiv A and take shore leave to go ice fishing before making for hostile waters.
CenPac: Replacement carrier aircraft and crews are distributed among the fleet. We order some B24 missions in the Marshalls more for training and disruption supply effects than any coherent plan. Some SBDs staged into the northern Gilberts sink an xAK and a smaller craft yesterday.
SwPac-SoPac: An IJN surface group hits Namatanai again with very damaging results. destroying numerous aircraft, shutting down the strip, and crippling the maintenance facilities. Resuuply and reinforcements on the way as well as some naval attack aircraft. I hope enough to overwhelm any CAP and set the BBs on fire. We order a raid on Kavieng as recon now shows over 11,ooo troops at the base we imagine is well fortified.
Burma: Vengence DBs given over to commander discretion prove we are not the only TWITs. They get massacred over Prome. P38s continue to score well on sweeps however and the latest Spitfires are almost ready to enter the fray.
The Capital Ship situation:
BB Revenge 13S-74F-25E 18% down two floatation points.
CV Yorktown II 10S-38F-17E 39% progressing slowly. she is pierside.
BB Alabama 50S-58F-17E 11% she is in a backwater port and not expected to make stateside for months.

CenPac: The last stragglers from OpWood due in port overnight. P47 group arrived yesterday. Carriers repairing quickly, shore leave to end within the week.
SwPac: Advance armor elements arrive at Kavieng. BB Yamato and BB Musashi raid Darwin again. Musashi gets a surprise.
CBI: Spitfires scheduled to sweep Prome tomorrow. B24s are rested.
