Upgrading artillery

SPWaW is a tactical squad-level World War II game on single platoon or up to an entire battalion through Europe and the Pacific (1939 to 1945).

Upgrading artillery

Post by Mark Shakespeare »

Hi,

I'm running a game as the Finns. I was allowed to buy offboard artillery as part of my core force (can anyone else do this??)

However, I can't upgrade after the battle. Is there a proper reqson for this, or is it a minute bugette??

Thanks.

First is a bug, second a feature.

Are you using the latest version of SPWAW? Than you shouldn't be able to buy OBA into the core.

Yes, I'm using version 4.5.

It only happens with the Finns, no-one else.

In fact, I can even buy Coastal Defense guns as part of my core force! I can just imagine them being towed around after the infantry ...

You might notice allso that you can't get that much on-map field guns and howitzers with Finns. Reason: Finns used their artillery to shoot arch-fire from distance and using artillery to shoot direct fire was very unusual indeed (Finns had not even trained their artillery to shoot direct fire missions before Winter War). Another thing: Basic Finnish artillery unit was artillery batallion as Finnish artillery doctrine developed before WWII stated that smaller artillery strengh was too uneffective (exception to this rule: 203mm howitzers and heavy field guns like 105 K 29 were used as seperate batteries). So getting to buy off-map artillery instead of on-map is historically correct with Finland.

About coastal guns: You really should not buy them in core force (unless you fight Campaign with only coastal battles). Finnish coast during WWII had quite heavy coastal artillery (Imperial Russia had fortified Finnish coasts well before and during WWI), those coastal guns are there to be used in coastal battles only.
