Interesting points, Registered55!

Does anyone know if there is a way to setup a game, so as to have more difficulties with creating ships and maintaining them throughout all of the races?

Been gone a long time, back again :D.

For me, ES is like Original Masters of Orion, or MOO. Very simple, basic and does a good job. Where it fails from MOO, is no espionge, and no combat. It tried to take combat from the real MOO III, Birth of the Federation, but I believe it fails, for me at least, it's not fun at all. While ES is better looking than MOO, it doesn't hold up to the 1000's of hours of playing MOO. ES is still a good fun game, but just doesn't last long to keep playing. Worth the $30 I say. Not more than that.

Star Ruler, I find a great game. Lots of options, Yes they can be silly but you know you can make your own Death Star. You can make the super sized star destroyer. Hell the silliness is you can make that star destroyer bigger than a solar system if you want to. You can blow up stars. You also have RING WORLDS! Lots of great options that no other game has. The company just like Code Force takes our input and puts it in the game, and they have updated their game to be really well now.

For me, SR and DW is 2 sides of the same coin. Both are real time. Both give great options. They play differently. One is in 3D while the other is 2D. I love them both. I say give SR a chance. I believe you can't beat the price. It's a great change of pace from DW. So if you want something like DW but different. I say SR is for you. It's not perfect, it has problems, but it's just a great game. Some people say DW sucks, some people say SR sucks. I say they are both AWSOME games. There are great mods for both series as well once you want to get past the vanillia game.

Just to add some info on another release you might be interested in

Sounds like they have some problems to fix. It might be advisable to back away for now.

I picked up Star Ruler during the Steam Summer Sale, and started playing it a week ago. I have to admit that I've been enjoying it for the last week :) To me, it's a simpler version of Distant Worlds. I'm sure I'll play some more DW once the newest patch becomes "official," though. I don't have any one "best" space 4x game, I tend to cycle through the ones I have (SE 4/5, SotS, GalCiv 2, ES, SR, DW, and it looks like I can start playing SotS 2 soon when the "1.0" patch is released [:)]). Like Grotius (hiya Razzle! [;)]), I prefer turn-based games, since that's what I got used to for all those years (MOO, Civ, etc.), but I think I'm finally getting the hang of the "real-time with pause" games :)

BTW, those of you not happy with some of the elements in Star Ruler might want to take a look at the Galactic Armory total conversion mod at ModDB.

Hey, good to see you, AndonSage. :) Thanks for posting your impressions of Star Ruler. I'm leaning toward getting Star Ruler instead of Legends of Pegasus, as the early reviews of Pegasus aren't great.

I fully agree. It's like DW but done in 3D and a more simpler. As I said, it's a great alternative to DW when you want the same game but something a bit different. Also you really can't beat the price. It's what $25 or something? About the same price for ES but sooo much better.

Again, how can you beat a game that can make a Ring World or a Death Star, or a Super Super Super X 1000 Star Destroyer? A planet can be a spec on the wind shield if you wanted LOL.

I've checked it out, although I haven't purchased it yet. You get the alpha release with your pre-order, and any future alpha/beta releases until the game is released. According to what I've read in comments for the Star Lords Announcement article on Space Strategy Sector, people seem to be enjoying the game, even in it's alpha state. I'm definitely watching this one. It has turn-based ship battles, which is more my usual speed [:D]

Thanks AndonSage, Davor and joeyeti.

You tickled my curiosity and I loaded up the demo for Star Ruler. I am having a blast so far and might just purchase it to keep me busy before the next distant worlds expansion.

thanks[:)]

I am interested in playing Starruler again with this Galactic Armory mod.It seems to add much needed flavour and immersion.I found the stock Starruler game the most bland space game of all times.

I just got both Distant worlds and star ruler the other day and I pre-ordered Endless space I think about a month before released and never played it after the 30 mins I gave it during release day.

Star Ruler: It seems complex but in the end sort of not that deep. Pausable real-time is a plus for me since I am a TBS guy and could only tolerate RTS which involves more click fest than strategy. I love the galaxy in this game and the ability to put as many stars as you want. The ship designer is great though it took me a bit of time to wrap my head around it. Research is a bit messy however I am quite intrigue about the hunch/guess thing since I haven't seen something like that from a space 4x before. Will give it another shot and see how things really are but so far it is not looking good.

Endless Space: beautiful UI and I thought I would find the sort of space 4x equivalent to Civ V however the combat system is disappointing and not my cup of tea. The game is too shallow for my taste and it didn't hit the same balance of not being too simple and too complex but just right like master of orion 2. I had high hopes for this game but I am not sure if I could really give it a chance because of its combat system

The Galactic Armory for Star Ruler was mentioned. From what I read it sounds impressive in its scope...
Does anyone have any experience in that vs. the stock SR game?

The GA Mod devs just released the updated mod yesterday (Aug 12, 2012) to work with the most recent version 1.2.1.0 of the game. So now folks who purchased it on Steam can try out the mod (the mod had to be updated to work with the most recent version of SR, which Steam automaticaly patches to) :)

I was reading the readme file, and wow [X(] That's a lot of changes! I'm going to try to find a summary of the mod to read [:D]

One thing no one has mentioned ... THE LOADING [:D]

IMHO if you only have a small slot of time to play in then SR if you have a good few hours DW. I can load SR faster than I can blink and then set up a new game and be looking at the map within a minute or so, DW is click, go put the kettle on and set up the brew, come back click load game, go off and make the tea, come back and its done [8|]
There will always be different genres in gaming, look at cars for example, racing, rally, arcade etc. SR is an arcade version of 4x and DW is more akin to a sim, like music I dont care what it is as long as it has a good beat, lyrics and isnt jazz and I listen to different types depending what mood im in, same goes with my gaming, I really enjoy 4x and some days i want it light (SR) some days medium (GCII) and when im really up for head scratching (DW)

Endless space has some really fun empire management, but the combat is not really all that interesting, plus the game wont hold your interest for very long, probably your standard expected 40 hours tho, it was definatly money well spent overall.

Star ruler on the other hand, i just could not get into at all, and i have tried on several occasions. it all just feels way too arbitrary. and its not exactly the nicest thing to look at, Aurora has a better interface than that game.

I am trying to like Star Ruler. It has a lot of neat stuff, but the ship design system is aweful. I have almost every space 4x game ever done since Reach for the Stars on the Apple IIe and SR has the only ship design system that I have ever found virtually incomprehensible with regard to system requirements and effects. About the only good thing I can say about it is that ship design is incredibly flexible.

Are you kidding? Aurora has a better interface? Wow, Steve must really have changed the UI since version 5.14, which was the last version I played.

I have no problems with the Star Ruler UI.
