SwPac-SoPac: YorktownII suffers additional float damage at sea (1pt), she is 4000nm from port. Halseys advance party to reach Kavieng on the 31st. USMC Col Aguilar reaches there today with some mechanics. USMC Corsairs wil assume defensive roles for the base. Work begins on enlarging the base.

New Years Day 1944
NoPac: Sub hunting off the HI pays off yesterday with sinking of a large 28pt tanker, full.
East Coast: The Iowa arrives.
West Coast: ARD making progress, no further damage.
CenPac: Long range recon aircraft begin staging towards Kavieng, additional USMC fighters stage in also. Air HQs arriving by troop transport. Only base units lag behind on the jungle road from Namatanai. Planning for operation southern mist under way. It will involved both air and sea units as we try and get an ARD to the Brittish. CV TFs bracketed by subs SSW of Hawaii, measures taken.
SoPac: Amphib. TF almost ready to depart the rear area. radio silence.
Burma: Small fighter actions, we bomb Shwebo (troops). IJA makes a forray between tributaries of the Yellow River. The terrain is good for us as well as nearby reaction forces.
Joe: My biggest fear is "failure to launch" with the CV COs. I like the picture! I'll use it as an inspirational photo at Zulu HQ. B29s are less than 90 days away at Aden so we try to prepare for them and integrate them into the war where they will have the greatest effect. It will be tough to strategic bomb with them at first as I only have 4 squadrons of USAF manned heavies in India and I will need to punish some IJAF bases in Southeast Asia and western China for the spring offensive in Burma. The supply situation in China is greatly improved with so many Dakotas and Commandos. I can resupply ground units almost anywhere I want within a turn or two.

West Coast: Our ARD seems to OK, she is deep in blue water now. We organize transports for the 6th Div and base forces.
CenPac: More carriers put to sea. Our fleet CVs avoid contact with the IJN subs. Our amphib. HQ from Makin is due in 2 days at Pearl. Some subs are diverted to SubDiv A and B to augment and replace boats which will require Pearls services.
SwPac-SoPac: New Ireland is developing nicely; we will need it shorten our supply lines. The first photo recon USN Liberators arrive; we look forward to peeking deeper into the IJ defense ring particularly Rabaul. Our ARD has left port and Operation Sea Mist is a reality now. Aircraft are staging and two large TFs have left ports in suport. Ampib. OP has our TFs merging together tonight and will set sail in 24 hours. YorktownII closes on the equator.
India: My guess is 45 days to launch our counter offensive.
China: Some American units join the Fourteenth (I think) Airforce in China. Chenault has a fully trained Chinese group now. IJA forces have closed on our lines in two places around the Yellow River. We beat off a shock attack yesterday.

You are worrying too much about your TF leaders. Those CV TFs should still fight, there should be no real risk of them not launching air CAP.
Reforming the CV TFs should not result in different leaders. Currently the captain of the ship automatically chosen as the flag is automatically being made your TF leader. So if you put that ship in a TF, the ship captain will again show up as the TF leader.

I let the carriers put to sea several days ago. Four fleet CVs and some CVLs. As Intrepid is now in Cenpac, they will refuel and make for SwPac. Alfred, I sure hope they launch more than anything else. The last few day have been little to report on. Some sub actions, some bombings, and some smallish ground actions on the Yellow River. I will play chess in China rather than brute number games. We have an amphib. TF at sea, several reinforcement TFs, suppy and fuel TFs and ARD TFs. The emperor has again expressed his dismay with air war. He reports veteran pilots flew this raid.

CenPac: Intrepid and escorts put in for minor repairs, they have a long trip. CV Wasp and the other fleet carriers flirt with the equator today. No Turtle Backs in this task force.
SoPac: FAT-2 arrives back in the rear and loads three more seabee Bns for New Ireland. An LST TF loads some motorized support left behind by the 43rd Division. The command TF for the Amphib. HQ in the Solomons will reach port in 48hours and begin loading the HQ to then rendevous with the 43rd at sea.

It's one of the days I let the war go on without Zulu HQ to SNAFU it. HQ only stages some groups and resets some recon. Destiny awaits several TFs well to sea in route to assembly areas and beaches. In China we order some Chinese formations on the Yellow River to take up new positions. Very few squadrons flew today. The raids on Taberfane and Koepang are dissappointing. Sweeps in Burma find no opposition.

China: The Chinese fighter group is mauled yesterday, it will take months to recover group strength.

West Coast: New ARD TF leaves the west coast for CenPac. Large supply and fuel TFs form in ports. Several squadrons stage to ports for debarkation to the Pacific. Convoy to SoPac forms with a Def Bn, coastal AA, and an EAB. The 347th/339th FS and VMF-531 Det also load with them. YorktownII is 1480nm from the yards.

CenPac: radio silence
SwPac-SoPac: Musashi and Yamato believed to be spotted at Taberfane, probably topping off as we have seen tankers there. Hell Divers and Liberators alerted. Southern Mist proceeds but may lose a couple of days if the big Jap BBs raid east, and their heading is south east. Terrible news from Munda hits Zulu HQ. We land another 50AV last night but Akagi and Ryuho (possibly Junyo to) arrive in the morning. Our screen is 240nm to the west (patrol zone) and whiffs. The IJN naval avaiators score quickly and often. We do "shoot first" but go after the IJN picket and miss. We also lose most of our attack aircraft and escorts (Corsairs). In the first wave, 83 Jills and Judys with a small Zero escort smash into CVEs Sangamon and Chenango. Torps sink both. A destroyer is set alight to. We get another wave in but without escorts, this time on the their carriers. 17SBDs in, 8 come out. No hits. The carriers only mount a 15 Zero CAP. Sixteen Avengers hit next and 12 Zeros splash 3 and damage 8 more. No Hits. We get another raid in on their screen but it to scores no hits and the AA does deadly work. At the end of the day from Burma to Munda we lose 70 aircraft to 38. Of the thirty eight some are Oscars swept by P38s in the CBI. The afternoon attack by the IJN goes in against the amphib. forces. Tennessee and Nevada are doubtfull at best. Four big AKs are burning and two APAs are lost. All we can do is reinforce the Dive bombers and add more escort for tomorrow. Two surface TFs were "knee Jerked" by TWIT into intercepting the Akagi. This will probably make a nice coup de gras for the Emporer. The IJN ground forces on Munda recon for us in the bombardment phase. They only show 59 unadjusted (I presume) AV with an additional JNAF unit.
Burma: We pound Mandalay and Schwebo and sweep central Burma. The ratios are in our favor but not by a wide margin.
China: The IJA tries to force the mountain pass near Taiyuan with 2 divisions and a tank Reg. In the only good news of the day 6th Group Army repels them with great loss. 3370 casualties to 353.
