Noob Questions

Post by Vasquez »

Hi Community,

Iam working on a DW Review and need some Info =)

1. Any chance to prevent my Construction ships to build stuff at the other side of the Galaxy besides to controll them by myself?

2. What is needed to harvest luxury ressouces like Jakanta Ivory? Just a ordinary Mining Station?

3. What does those blue dots mean? (Screenshots below)

Thans in advance and more question to come I fear :)

1. You just need turn off automation of constructor ship.
2. Yes, just a ordinary Mining Station
3. These blue dots mean, that system has a fuel reserve and any your ship can refuel at it.

2. As WiZz said - ordinary Mining Station is all that is needed to mine luxury resources. I want only to add that You may use both - Mining and Gas Mining stations. This is because what matter for luxury resources is that station must have luxury resources extractor. Since by defoult both type of stations have it, than both may extract it. But of course if You choose to, You may make specialized version which will be able to mine only gas, or ores, or luxury... Not much sens in doing that thou ;)

Couple points of note that I had missed up until recently:

1. the stock ship designs are not always 'optimal.' If you want to get the most out of your game, it seems wise to look over and understand the stock designs and create your own designs that are special purpose built for how you intend to use them. For example, mining and gas stations have no weapons and very little armor. But if you can absorb a higher cost to build one (which is nominal given how much money they make for your Empire) then you can readily make one of them more or less impregnable to low level starting pirates. Also other things like, the Destroyers having a small troops transport plus some fleet combat components = half-way good at both, not specialized at either.

2. the starting mining facilities that you will have when you create a new random game, might actually pose more of a drain on your economy than a help. Again, specialization and focusing your efforts on fewer high-quality extraction points.

3. the importance of luxury resources to getting your economy running smoothly it seems cannot be overstressed. The Galactopedia and hints in game suggest that more colonies is the key to making lots of credits, and as long as you have plenty of luxury resources to allow you to keep taxes high (and also each new colony is growing at a reasonable pace) that may be true. But I for one did not focus enough on luxury resources my first few attempts and my Empires sort've peaked then crashed.

4. It is definitely a 'steep learning curve' game, considerably less forgiving than Galactic Civilizations II.

These sorts of subtle points are not going to be evident to a new player, and IMO that fairly counts as a 'slight' deficiency because the Galactopedia and in game info doesn't really seem to plant the right seeds for the beginner to sort that all out on their own. But then, it shouldn't be too easy right?
The x-ray is her siren song. My ship cannot resist her long. Nearer to my deadly goal. Until the black hole. Gains control...

Yeah a lot stuff to learn but I like the Game so far. Best 4x feeling since ages. Another quick question: Do I need a mine (besides a star port) to harvest the ressources on already colonized planet?

No.
Shields are useless in "The Briar Patch"...

As WiZz said, you can put them on manual.

Another way to do it is to manually queue jobs for them but leave them on automatic. Just remember to add more jobs to the queue before they run out of stuff to do. This way you will not have to babysit them.

Iam running 15 construction ships now (with 11 colonies) and control them by my own. Not sure if I need more.

Some more questions: I figured out that I can upgrade (retrofit) defensive stations and space ports but not mining stations as example. Do I need to scrap a mining station If I want to place a newer design there?

[edit: Asking how many construction ships is like asking how many warships. Do you have bases/repairs that desperately need doing that you are not getting around to? Then you need more. Do you already have more than enough of all resources? Then you need less.]

[On mining bases.] Yes.

You can only uprgrade bases at colonies.

Telling the truth, 15 construction ships for me is really much. I usually have 15 in a late game when I have more than 50 colonies. But is it a good to compare it? No, it is not. Feelotraveller already described how it works. For me it would be too much, somebody else would say that 25 is not eounght, and for You it may be ok. Just keep Your eye on maintandence to not go to hight and it should be ok :)

To be more precise about space stations (whether they are defence platforms, or mining stations) You can upgrade every station which is built over Your own colony. So it is not that You may upgrade Defence Stations, but not mining stations. If You will build Defence Station in deep space or over uncolonised planet/moon You will also be unable to upgrade it.

PS. Wouldn't it be better to change this theard's title from "Noob questions" to "Newbe questions"? ;)

15 construction ships is crazy early game with its high maintenance stopping possible fleet power...Your private economy helps mine stuff too.

Thx for help guys. Much appreciated. Next questions :)

1. There was a ingame hint about scrapping ancient ships to gain that technology or something. Cant find any information now. How does this work? Do I need to "retire" a looted ship at a space port to get bonuses ?

2. What does that mean: A couple of ships are red highlighted within my fleets. Screenshot:

1.  When you retire a ship that uses technology which you have not yet researched you get a bonus to tech research. You can only retire at spaceports; it takes time and a construction yard slot.  (You also get back all the materials used to construct the ship.)  Excellent to do this with ex-pirate escorts which have a fuel cell or repair module that you don't.  Questionable whether it's worth doing with a hi-tech cruiser which can trounce any fleet currently in service.  (I remember a thread in the War Room which looked at this in more detail if you want to search for it.)

2.  That ship has damaged components.  You can remedy by sending it off for repair.  Investigate the ship first to see which components are damaged - it may not be worth repairing it straight away, or it might be critical.

Thank you traveller =)

Next one (silly me I know): Is it worth to build more than one resort stations at black holes/neutron stars etc (if they have a good and central location) or is one resort base enough?

AFAIK that's just a quirk of the Windows interface that DW uses. [:)]
