small research queue question

Post by sgsmitty »

Is there a way to see what is queued up for research in a list or something?

Thanks

sgsmitty, the Galatopedia has a good explanation (with graphs) but here's what I do in game.

From the top toolbar (in-game), near the center, click on the Light bulb icon and it will take you to the Research Screen (it will probably say the process is automated and ask you if you want to turn the automation off). Once there you can choose the branch you're interested in (Weapons, Energy and Construction and High Tech and Industrial). On the top bar, below the title of the tab, it will show what project is currently being researched and it's progress (in percentages). The forth tab is for your 'Research Stations' and it will show a list of your research stations and much other info.

Choose one of the three main tabs and work your way down. Rectangles that are hash marked are only available to certain races. Completed research projects will be bright. Research projects that have not been investigated will be dim. A yellow border around a dim rectangle shows the project is currently under research and a pulsing border indicates a Crash Research project. As you roll across each of the projects, it will light up and show, along with a lot of other stuff, whether that research item has been completed, the degree of progress, it's place in the research que or what other steps need to be researched first.

I hope that is what you meant. :)

there is no research list just the numbers on the tech tree in the order you clicked them. Yeah it drives me nuts also.

If you happen to be so foolish as to lay out a long term research plan, and then notice that you forgot something or want to reorder your priorities, you have no choice but to delete all those things you had queued up after the point where you want to insert the other thing, and then re-add them again afterwards. Definitely one of the clunkiest research GUIs I have ever seen.

Panpiper, Civ 4 has a similar situation. For that case, I can't remember other better examples of a research queue setting in any other computer game...

Thanks for responses, any info is always helpful to a newb. A list of queued techs, that could be rearranged, does sound like a nice thing. But I agree that I have not seen anything like that in other games either.

So far I am enjoying the game. I am still very much in the early stages of trying to figure out how it works, what you can do or not do and how to do it. I appreciate the complexity of the game and such. I am not sure if the acutal developers communicate with the players or not but I would say I am impressed with all the thought put into the game.

Try GalCiv2 for an example of how it is done, for example, the ability to sort the research queue by cost, area of research etc in a nice eay to follow list and one that you can also flip to view a very good tech tree view that you can follow easily and when you scroll it doesnt make the screen stutter on a £150+ graphics card (and a dual core + 4gig) [:D]

And now you have got me started, a decent colony governor, I know you can select 1(?) yes 1(?) item to be built first at each colony, how about a list of things you can select to build as and when the tech becomes available, like I always build a small spaceport and a defense base at every new colony, with the way the economy is in DW you can afford to.
