Titan designs for TEAM play

Post by Sir Rechet »

There has been a lot of posts about how to design titans and there has been a lot of reviews for those designs as well. But as far as I know, there has NOT been much discussion as to what kind of titans would work best as a team!

A classical example of a design for teamplay is the old faithful Wolfpack design (recon size), having two chainsaws and super-fast legs to carry them to the unfortunate target. Once you get two or three of these beasts to attack one target it's pretty much over - there's no way a downed titan can fight very effectively. And getting lots of CS hits into legs is bound to make just about anyone fall rather quickly..

As an improvement over this idea, I added a larger titan to support such packs. Usually the Wolfpack titans just walk around, while the larger support runs to keep the pack together. As weaponry for this support, the BRG seems to have suberb qualities, downing enemy titans from range to make them even more helpless against the onslaught of those super-quick wolfpacks. Besides, the enemy has a tough choise - either to try to down one of the wolves or the heavily-armored support that keeps it on its knees most of the time.. Yay!

Other such ideas?

If I'm fighting a team battle, I like to have mostly long-range titans on my side. I know, it's weird, but as I've mentioned before, I prefer my enemies to be dead long before they near my position. Give me a pack of titans with Gauss cannons, Plasma Guns and missiles, and I'll be happy to cripple the opposition from across the screen.

A way to make a good use of Millenia would be to use it in a "secondary killer" titans. A secondary killer is a titan with high damage potential, but still below the primary killer.

For example, a Heavy titan with double AC20's plus double PLs would allow for rather strong armor to be installed. The secondary killer (Light titan) could have just 2 Large lasers with a very good heat reg to allow for continous firing. Now, the primary killer is supposed to be the more dangerous one, right? Therefore the enemy will try to concentrate fire on it, leaving the secondary killers with no worries about their paper-thin armors for quite some time. (Naturally, a human opponent would take down the secondaries first..)

I suppose the other legendary 'invincible' team setup deserves to be mentioned here - a team with nothing but Napalm Missiles as weapons.

This setup works the better the MORE there are enemies as heating up one target until it explodes due to heat overload will also heat up a large number of others, feeding a chain reaction. The larger range of NMs allows your own team to survive with next to no casualties - you don't need much armor either as you'll be keeping the enemy in the red heat most of the time anyway.

An alternative (not to mention a much more aggressive) way to go about this would be to use strong shields and tons of flamers. You'd split your team into several subteams of two or three titans each and take good care that those subteams wouldn't end up too close together. Each subteam has the necessary firepower to attack a pack of enemies on their own by using chain reactions to their advantage.

Both of these work especially well in Hell arenas, or whatever it is called nowadays..

all this talk of team play and NO mention of G.M. 6??? That's monstrous damage from a huge range and only the best E.C.M.s and flares will stop them. Plus you can destroy cover with 'em.

How hard is it to hit just that little bit of red armor on an enemy titan with guns/lasers? Pretty hard! But a few shots of g.missiles will chew it up quickly.

Teamwork will offset the short-range penalties,or just bring along a S.R.M8 or two :)

And a cigar ;)
cheers

Heh heh. Can't forget the cigar. And maybe marshmallows to toast over the burning remains of your enemy's titan. :D

Welcome back Jukka. Just the other day I was wondering whatever had happened to you...

About the pack teams, Larkin showed their power back in the tourney team era, not with Wolfpacks (they have a CS and a FT) but with dual-CS recons. He also used a Pack Leader, a LRM based (IIRC) heavier titan.

Millenia is quite good in WS, it actually had to be toned down to 115% cause it was generating heat dissipations of 5.6+C/sec!
You'll like the new armor stats, much more balanced. You'll probably have to redesign all your titans though :)

NMs are not exactly what they were once, since the 1.8/loc change (in v1.4 IIRC).
