I must report that the A-24 did not do much for me in this game, but that is more to my ineptness than anything else.

How would you have used them differently?

That is a good question. They start in Darwin and their Naval Bombing skill is abysmal. I moved them to Soerabaja
and trained them some. I used one squadron at Balikapapan to try to hit mini KB without success and losses. I never
really got the chance to use them in the DEI. My opponent did not do the things I was expecting and was very careful
to LRCAP his TFs in the area. I moved them to OZ and off to Port Moseby where they never flew but I lost most of them
in 2 nuclear Naval bombardments and a full strike by KB. I had expected my opponent to attempt to take Palembang fairly
early, but he still has not attacked.

Maybe he figures if you can't get tankers in or out of Palembang, the fuel will be waiting for him when he does decide to take it.

The fuel is way overstocked now, it is spoiling even as I type.

He captured Malang on Java this turn.

He was able to do another pair of naval bombardments at Port Moseby. And another full strike from KB,

Not much to report. I am moving my units out of Ichang, he is using them for bombing practice and it doesn't look I will be able to take the base. Moving back into the +3 terrain makes more sense.

More naval bombardments at PM and a ton of aircraft attacking. Supplies are near 0 and the base is trashed 100/100/100 damage. It will not be long. But, he is burning a lot of fuel making the Raboul to Port Moseby naval bombardment runs.

I am moving units out of Noumea because the base would be overstacked. I have units at La Foa and Koumac. I have units waiting for a TF to unload so they can move to Tanna.

My most desperate need now is PPs to convert the WC units to SoPac or Pacific Oceans commands.

March 25-26, the same kind of turn. Naval bombardments of PM and lots of aerial attacks. Bombing in China and Burma where I have made a bit of a mess of things.

In Burma it looks like my moving order mistake has doomed the 1st Burma Division. I misdirected it and it is now surrounded. I must also tip my hat to my opponent, he was quite skillful in his invasion of Burma. He used the road from Thailand to Taung Gyi to cut my forces off. Then I compounded the mistake by moving the 1st Burma Division in the wrong direction for 2 turns. With 2 day turns, that sealed it fate. Such is war, mistakes happen.

In the vein of mistakes, it looks like he crossed a river just above Ichang by mistake. The shock attack was in my favor.

Again, a fairly quiet turn. He is continuing to send naval bombardments against Port Moseby, this is costing him a lot of fuel. He has yet to recross the causeway at Singapore and no landings yet on Sumatra. More bombing in Burma and China.Next turn is a good turn for me. The Japanese Amphibious bonus ends, and I have a ton of ships poised to do their 4/42 upgrades.
He did land forces at Attu and Amchitka this turn. I have no idea if he will take Adak or other islands. I have built Kodiak Island and Dora Harbor is just starting to build. I have BB Warspite patrolling the area. My CVs are in for upgrade and repair.

BTW, after this heart stopping event on Christmas Eve:
Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Wake Island at 137,100

Allied aircraft losses
F4F-3A Wildcat: 1 destroyed
F4F-3 Wildcat: 1 destroyed

Allied Ships
CV Enterprise, Torpedo hits 3, heavy damage

I see I missed a turn. We have done two more turns and there is very little to report. Bombing of my troops in China, PM, Singapore, and Burma continues. I sit and wait. I have a large number of ships that have upgraded and need to wait for them to finish.

One more turn where not a lot has happened. He captured Vaitupu, Madioen and IIoilo today.
I forgot that he took Baker Island last turn. More bombing in China and Burma.
I had some Hurricanes intercept some escorted bombers and they had success. Reported was
he lost 28 aircraft to my 5. His reported losses included 6 A6M22 and 8 Bettys. Hopefully
some of those had elite crews.

While he's busy trying to get things together in the DEI, and still taking Singapore (!!), do you have any plans for pressing his forces in the Pacific? He must be stretched a bit thin, and getting footholds on islands like Ndeni, Tabiteuaea and securely holding Canton could really help out in the next year and give you springboards for easy offensives.

Also, do you have thoughts about stiffening the defense of Burma?

I see I have been lax on doing updates.

April 6-7, 1942

Not much happened.
He sank an xAP near Raoul Island and I sank I-22 at Kodiak.

April 8-9, 1942

He was able to coordinate 5 divisions into Singapore. 38th, 21st, 4th, 18th and 33rd.
He did much better this time, but still some good losses on his side. Since I consider
all forces lost in the area, my losses are not that important.

Hi Erik. This is a R.A. 4.6 scenario which means his Naval Air is a lot stronger than stock. He has extra and larger naval air units and the aircraft to fill them. He will also be getting more CVs, here is a quick look at the historical arrival list of CV/CVLs. What doesn't show is that he has 3 CVLs at start, all with full complements of A6M2 and B5N2 groups. And his main CVs all have fighter groups of size 21 - 27.

So, he has more naval air power, more CV/CVLs than I do. As shown at PM, he can take most any base he wants within some reason. I have concentrated on getting good garrisons at Noumea, Nadi, Suva, Pago Pago and Christmas Island. I am trying to get a full division, a Marine Defense, a FA, 1-2 AA, 2-3 BFs in all of those bases and building the forts up to at least 6. And then the ports and airfields. I am critically short of PPs since I used 500+ to change leaders in Singapore and probably another 200 for leader changes in China. I did just get two separate regiments this turn and I am sending them to the South Pacific area, their reporting HQ, for deployment to smaller islands.

In Burma I have made a mess of myself there. [:)] I will have to be content to try and hold Myitkyina and Wazup. I have the 5th Chinese Corps units on the China/Burma border but I need 1800 PPs to release it. I have units spread to all of the bases in Bengal and they are building forts and airfields. I don't need any Paratroops in my rear areas.

That CV line-up is impressive. No wonder John III splits his CVs and runs them all over creation.

I was just thinking that what would demoralize me the most and make me possibly frantic, making bad choices, is if the Allied player started grabbing small bases all over the place. All you need now past the landing bonus is to take places with Raider battalions and make him prep to get them back if he decides to do that. By all means your build-up on the more useful important bases you mention is solid and necessary. Any of those smaller more expendable units could just be used to cause some havoc. Maybe get some footholds for deep search at one of the Southern Gilberts or Nanumea. Strengthening Aleutians holdings, although I can't remember what's happening up there.

Just thinking that if you can divide his attention and forces while he's still busy with the SRA you could have opportunities to either get footholds or spank a fragmented response.

I am closing this AAR will be mostly leaving this forum. I have two games going and will certainly continue them. There are just too many stupid people on this forum for me to continue to keep my cool.

Dan,

Don´t let a few (or one for that matter) bad apple(s) get to you. Just use the green button instead. I for one have always valued you advice greatly and I´m learning a lot from reading your AAR. It would be a shame to see you leave! [:(]

I am going to open this again and do some updating.
We are up to June 19, 1941

India - Burma
I have vacated Burma, except for Akyab, completely. He did a good maneuver and moved a couple of units via Taung Gyi
and cut off some of my troops, most importantly the 1st Burma Division. It has been destroyed and I plan to rebuild it
starting in 1944. I have no Burmese squads and they are updated with 1944 Indian squads.

I have held the Akyab, Imphal, Ledo line with no problems. He tried to cross the river between Akyab and Coxs Bazaar
with bad results. He also tried an attack at Imphal, that also didn't work.

May 16, across the river:
Ground combat at 55,43 (near Cox's Bazar)

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 4427 troops, 36 guns, 16 vehicles, Assault Value = 158

China:

I lost Wenchow on June 14, 1942. It held for quite a while. I abandoned Kukong and Liuchow. We have had a few
fights in the North of China, and I have been able to completely destroy two small units and wreck at least 2 others.
Here is a picture of southern and Central China. The units in the two red boxes are trapped and will be lost, but
they will take a number of turns yet before they surrender. I have no other great concerns at this time. I do
have three corps moving to the hex just West of Hengyang to prevent a river crossing. The cities around Changsha
are well garrisoned and have level 5 forts and will be level 6 in a week or two.

Malaya.

All of Malaya is in Japanese hands, Singapore fell April 22, 1942. Not too bad and I
had moved the 11th Indian division to Palembang.

Borneo and Java in all in Japanese hands.

All of Sumatra except Palembang are in Japanese hands. Palembang still has 125,000+ supply, 982 AV
and a number of guns and AFVs. The forts are at level 4(42) and still growing. We will see how long
it takes him to take it. By my calculations, there has been at least 800,000 fuel lost to spoilage
so far. That in itself will put a dent into his production. Plus it will take him a while to assemble
enough troops to take the city.
