Another ASL conversion.

Post by DoubleDeuce »

For anyone interested, I am currently working on an ASL to CoH conversion of the Guards Counterattack scenario. It is pretty much done, just tweaking it a bit so it can be played from either side, German or Soviet.

Another delay is that after entering Scenario Text and then going back to loading to play is causing load failures. Not sure it's an odd character such as : or something else. Efforts to narrow it down have failed thus far. [:@]

My playtesting so far has caused me to reduce the # of game turns to 4 instead of the 5 turns for the regular ASL scenario. This should still give enough turns for the Russians to do what they need although it instills a greater sense of urgency as they cannot afford to get complacent. ASL has multi-hex buildings, something that CoH does not, so I have had to adjust the Victory Hexes to be for each hex and not a group of hexes. Basically, for each building hex captured as well as for each unit destroyed is worth 1 point to both sides. It's a matter of holding the most turf at the end of the game AND grinding down your opponent's forces more than he does yours.

Good to see that you couldn't resist buying this. [:D]

Looking forward to your scenarios.

Forum traffic doesn't mean everything. This game is unique and won't appeal to typical real time gamers. But if it appeals to you, that is what matters.

Welcome aboard DD, looking forward to your conversions.

I would've liked multi hex buildings as well, and some other things, but you can still get a good translation.

I have all the core ASL modules and some 3rd party stuff so if anyone knows of some good, but small east front (1941-1942) scenarios they would like to see converted to CoH please let me know and I'll see if I have a copy to work off of. Of course, they will need to be using pretty much the same units available in the current CoH PC game.

Quick work. Downloaded and trying them out.
More options will become available when expansions come down the pipeline.
Good to see another scenario designer at work.

From the German side. I removed the units but the hidden tags remain.

Spoiler alert if playing as Russians.

I with there was a way to flip the camera with a hotkey, right click and drag is slow for me.

From the Russian side.

Ah that map looks familiar. Sigh, I miss having the will/energy/memory to play ASL.
Thanks Junk.

I definitely agree with the benefit of having a hotkey for that. For me, it took continual grabbing and dragging to finally get around to the other side.

In hindsight, I should have made the map bigger (i.e. extended it further along the mapboard). I found another small scenario that looks like it would be a good conversion but it requires a little more of the ASL board. Guess I'll be making another copy.

A hotkey to rotate the map 45 or 90 degrees is a great idea. I've put this on my short list. Any preferences for keys to do this?

What about the 1 and 3 keys which would complement the rotating of units in the deployment phase using the 4-9 keys?

1 and 3 sound good to me. I implemented it this afternoon using ALT+Left and ALT+Right, but I could add these keys as well. (Some people play on keyboards that don't have keypads, and I always have to remind myself to include keyboard options that don't use keypad keys. [:)])
