Image I'll need a lucky rabbit's foot to get out of this opening.

Your move pipewrench... and make it one of consequence.

(p.s. To roleplay the situation you really should have chosen Kiadian. [;)])

The issue does not so much seems to be placement, as that it appears to be that your capital's zone of influence is dwarfed by someone else's. Which hints at a certain economical disadvantage as well.

They have no defense base hopefully, yet.
Transport capacities could be a problem.

If he can force build troops, transports, and grab that spot fast, it would be a golden start.

I guess that are quite some ifs, though.

Oh dear... :) Looks as a really difficult situation :)
My advice - built strong fleet, recruit some troops, research bombs and declar war. Defet theirs capital defence and bombard them to the point that they do not have an army. And afther that take over their capital planet. Easy? Very Easy! But only on paper... :P Good luck :)

So? what is the other race? Can you outcolonize them? The "2-a-system" starts are far worse, if thankfully rare.

Keep us informed.... or even better: how about attaching the savegame and lets see who could make the best from this starting setup in the shortest time (gametime I mean). It's like a home-cup :)

I also tought about invasion/bombing to solve it as quickly as possible. The player shipdesigns are much better even at the start. In my games I try to cripple the close neighbors as fast as possible.

+1 for a savegame
