Do I miss something about ship size or did I encounter a bug?

Carriers can be bigger (not sure of percentage, maybe 40%?), but must have 40% of all space dedicated to hangers.

Gargoil is correct in that Carriers must have 40% of their design space dedicated
to Fighter Bay Components.

Carrier designs can be up to 50% larger than the currently researched construction
maximum size for ships (i.e. Max ship size is 800, Carrier ship size can be up to 1200
with 480 of that space devoted to Fighter Bays). [:)]
Shields are useless in "The Briar Patch"...
