An Aussie Affair: Re-Match!
Well I had little choice...I had to port the two CVs the flood damage was critical , and while at sea was getting worse. I would have lost one at least even without Luskans attack. But at least I will not be seeing his carriers for sometime, and if I do it will be in small numbers...something which my two new carriers can handle. And by the time he has built up his aircraft numbers (along with the green pilots) all of my new CVs CVLs and CVEs will be on their way. Things are looking good.

Yeah I had them set to "react" I am not sure that I would try that again, as I have had my balls handed to me on a plate many-a-time in past PBEMs this early in the year (July '42). But this time it just "felt" right....my aircrews were well rested and flush from the raid on lunga. I had a feeling that he might try and come south, and that if he did, with his long reach of his aircraft then the only possible thing to da was to have them on "react".
I can't be certain, but I've developed a feeling that moving with carrier TFs is a relatively "bad" thing to do. I always find that I get much better results if I've "parked" my CVs somewhere than if I'm chasing all over the place. Maybe I'm still thinking too much of "preparation points" from Pacwar, but my experience is that a "react" move never gets me the results that "sitting and waiting" does.
BTW - how did he catch your other CVs with that surface TF? They must have been moving really slow.

Yup I too have had bad experiances setting CV TFs on "react", but in this instance where I had a feeling that I was being chased, just packing the CVs didn't seem like the right thing to do. In a lot of ways manybe I just got lucky, and as I have said, this is not something that I would try and repeat....much like Midway. The USN modelled Midway in war games and came out worse for wear than in the real life battle.

Cap'n'gown has already answered this, they were caught in port. A sad way for them to go.

More action!
This turn shows just how aggressive Luskan can be, and as such must always be watched like a hawk. Luganville was the target of a Bombardment TF, which really did little damage (????). I had thought that he might make a move like this and had a transport TF steam the hell out of Luganville.
As poor as bombardment was, so too was the response of my bombers! How the hell can you miss a BB and yet hit a frigging DD ???? On the up-side the experiance points that these guys are earning is great!

And yet again Luskan rushes into Luganville........but only to find cold steel waiting for him. The cost to me was minor damage to a CA and 2 DDs that will be going to Pearl. His subs on the other hand are rampaging around and causingall sorts of bother. Wala Beach is where he has been a real pain, and so I sent a ASW DD TF (all have ASW of 8) to do something about it.....only to have him put a torp into one of the ASW DDs !

*Sigh* I have been whipping myself over THAT little mistake for the past day !
Luskan is still on the offensive with a surface raid at Wala Beach. Wala Beach is one of the most important bases on the allied map in the early parts of the game. If you DON'T quickly setup a seaplane base here the IJN player is able to probe deeply into the southern area of the map without being detected, something that I have used against Luskan in our last match. Drongo taught me this the hard way in our now complete game (SCEN# 19 IIRC). Ever since I have been fanatical about getting 'Cats into the skies as soon as possible.

Interesting point, at 35,000 feet the Rufes are unable to touch the B-17s attacking Gilli Gilli.....what a fantasic way to build exp points for the crews!

Another bunch of APs sails in Luganville unmolested. After a quick refit, and some reinforcement val squadrons arrive (and get transferred aboard my nearly empty CVs to augment the slowly recouperating squdarons there) I'll be off to see if I can't put a few more holes in Raver's fleet early. He probably has a BB around the place somewhere, and two CVs. Failing that, halting the reinforcement and resupply at Luganville is my chief aim (as well as destroying as many level bombersa on the ground there with bombardments).
Although so far my bombardments have been pretty miserable affairs. Once refitted and refueled, my Cvs will lead the way in (their fighter compliment is still undamaged, with extremely high stats) scare off Raver's surface ships, beat off any bombing raids and then POW!!! my BBs are going to sink all the ships along Noumea (lots of them docked but not in port), and blast the bombers at Luganville (hopefully they'll get the bombardment right this time).
That is the plan anyway.

While waiting for Luskan next move to arrive via Email I thought that I would just ramble on about what I think that his intentions are, as supported by his actions. So far he seems fixated with the South East Pacific.....the tempo of operations there have been very high, however I cannot rule out a sneak attack on the Aussie coast. My main aim is defence defence and more defence, duck and weave. Try not too give him a big target to hit, and yet at the same time try and punish him on his bold strokes south. Not an easy task with the small amounts that the allies have to start with.
The score for the game so far is:
Japanese 5862
Allies 3104
Sinks sunk
Japanese 4 for 23 points
Allies 18 for 814 points ( 2 CVs =700 points)
Aircraft losses
Japanese 384

Although I've almost got 1000 points ahead in the ships sunk department, Raver has damaged a BB, a CA and 5 destroyers above 35 sys damage, so they'll be headed back to Tokyo after the flt damage is repaired. I am somewhat concerned with the extremely high amount of USN subs just south of Truk. Again, Raver still hasn't got the range perfect yet, but with the amount of unescorted ships going in and out of Truk I will need to try and get some ASW result up there (even if my planes just keep the US subs from surfacing - or chase them out of fuel as the game frequently allows to happen. Would be a long trip back to Luganville with no fuel . . .
Waiting for some refuelling, and a quick refit (thunderstorms really got me that last time) and I'll be back on the offensive in no time.
Nothing has happened (barely a shot fired in three turns).

Luskans' right about the thunderstorms ! I don't recall ever playing a game and seeing this many....sometimes for two days followed by a day of rain. Sometimes it can work for ya, and sometimes it can work against ya;)

More glorious action as a relatively small surface raider group trashes some more of Raver's ships at Wupenko. The smaller group seems to have achieved much better results than the huge, 25 ship tfs packed with CAs and BBs (although this group did not attempt to bombard). My destroyers (only two in the tf) performed brilliantly with torpedo attacks. I might have struck a winning forumla.
I have miplaced the combat report (maybe Raver will post it) but basically the Mikuma, Mogami, Tama (or another CL), and two destroyers slipped in to have a go at Wupenko last turn. A USN surface combat group (an ASW hunter group at a guess) of 4 destroyers reacted to my surface tf from as far away as luganville (I think) and were present in the first round of nastiness.
These four destroyers fought quite well, starting a small fire in the Mikuma's superstructure, and landing about a dozen hits. Thankfully none of them pierced my glorious ship's armour. There was a reported torpedo hit on the Mikuma but in truth the torpedo missed and no damage was done. In response my cruisers left one enemy destroyer damaged and on fire, and my destroyers scored 2 reported torpedo hits on another (which sank).
Then my slightly battered ships engaged Raver's supply tf of 7 large 3000 capacity APs, and one escorting destroyer (Morris?). The Morris was pounded to a hulk and finished off by a torpedo hit, and two other APs were torpedoed and sunk, while my Cas, badly damaged another AP and lightly damaged the next. All this for no hits or damage in return.
My combat report showed that in one night two destroyers landed about 6 or 7 torpedo hits total - if I could repeat that success Raver's surface fleet won't stand a chance. I'll have to test it against some of his CAs . . .
Two destroyers and three transports sunk, and as many again damaged and on fire, that night was a very successful venture.

With dancing Bananas and Storm Troopers who needs BBs?

Correct, it was one of my ASW TFs. And they all fought very well against overwhelming odds! Even putting "only" one or two shells in Luskan's ships means that they are off to Nippon for repair, and so is one less ship to worry about.
Unlike Luskan I can keep track of the CRs....and here it is:-

9 torpedo hits from 2 destroyers. Gawd . . .
Anyhow Raver, none of the aforementioned ships are above 8 sys damage - your navy boys died in vain. Get used to it
Also, very pleased with my little port raid to Noumea. Unless Raver pulls some air units from Australia, he won't have enough fighters to properly cover the place.
Here is a snippet of a CR from a different Aussie PBEM game, me (USN) vs Adm. Arctic (IJN). Just had to post my CMoH award winning subs.

Raver's subs have now got the range outside Truk - very very worrying. A turn earlier and they would have caught the wounded Kirishima limping home (escorted however).
At the cost of 1 sunk sub and 1 lightly damaged (Still has to go to Nippon) my navy seems to have taken care of the USN ASW threat for now. Was hoping for bigger targets - but I guess Raver won't be sending any my way now anyway. May as well pull them out of Noumea and send them home for a well earned R+R - they can come back when Raver doesn't expect it - or maybe just stay on the defensive. Obrien, Skylark, Lamson and Arunta all sank.
Raver has now sunk 5 of my ships (the sub is the biggest of them). I've got almost 900 points worth of his so far!! If I keep this up I may still be able to take the USN on in even terms later in the game in spite of the way Raver's flak massacred my Naval bombers . . .

With dancing Bananas and Storm Troopers who needs BBs?

Although a turn later the tally has increased to half a dozen SCs, 4 DDs, a MSW, and two or three APs, Raver's ASW isn't all that bad.
Out of six subs sent to Noumea (which caused the damage above) two have now been sunk, and one is limping home (not going to sink, but is going to take a while to get there).
Won't be trying that again until I know he's got some CVs in the area.

And I hit another sub! Excellent! I have always felt that it is not wise to operate subs in shallow water hexs, and in the past this has proved true. Luskan's subs were a real pain in the arse, but I think that I have broken the back of his sub assault.
