BUY 1 or all 3?

I have been interested in the progress of this game for a while now and I think Im gonna go and buy it. I was wondering if I only need the first game or can I start playing with the add ons installed? In other words, is there a story in the first game which needs to be completed which then leads on to the second add on etc. Is it a totally open ended game where there is no real story ( like Armada 2526 )? I prefer games that have at least some sort of story line or purpose attached. I like games where someone sets me the challenge rather than me designing that challenge myself. Hopefully this is the game for me but any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

All have a story and with each expansion offers added features. It is fine to start with the stock Distant Worlds game and then move up when you are ready.

Thanks pipewrench Sounds perfect! Can I just ask how the game is set out, ie is there set campaigns where the designer has built different maps or does the user determine the size of the universe etc? and is it a pure single player game only? Thanks in advance

Rasher, all of the above. You determine a number of parameters for the galaxy including size, races and whether to turn the storylines on or off. The galaxy is randomized based on your parameters you set. It is single-player only.

Thanks TG So can I turn the story lines on after a few days or will I have to start a new game? How good is diplomacy in the game? Last question box copy or DD?

You will have to start a new game to change whether the storyline is on or off.
 
I would recommend getting all three and then playing the storylines (there are two) one after the other.  Legends has more goodies.  I believe there is a discount for purchasing all three at once.
 
Direct to drive is easy.  I'm not sure if there are box copies around...
 
Diplomacy - I've seen better, and I've seen worse.  It works well with the rest of the game.

Discount for purchasing all three at once That is the main problem with this game, its so expensive. You do not get a discount for buying all three unfortunately you just missed the 'sale', for all three then it was £50, now its back to £61, there are constant posts on here asking that that a discount for all three be introduced to pull new players in, but it seems to fall on deaf ears.

The game is not cheap, I agree.  Funny thing is I hear lots of people complaining about the price when they haven't purchased it/before they purchase it, but almost always the comment afterwards is that it cost a lot but it was well worth it.  (Personally I would much prefer to pay $80 for a game I get endless hours of pleasure out of than 4 x $20 games that I never play after an hour.)
 
But you are wrong Darkspire, there is a 20% discount of the expansions price if you buy them at the same time as the Distant Worlds.  I think this has always been the case.  Go to the checkout and see for yourself.  You are correct that there was an even better deal which has recently ended.  [:)]

Yeah, i "missed" the better offer, but did get a 20 percent discount when i bought it a few days ago (to my shame, i didnt even know the game existed before i stumbled upon it here).. and after looking at a few videos, i was sold
