Looks like one VC (Briton John Cruickshank) was won in a Catalina and one (Canadian David Hornell) was won in a Canso.

You want aircraft questions?

Here you go

Which aircraft am I?

Quiz one

WITH APOLOGIES - PLEASE NOTE THE AMENDMENT TO CLUE 3
1. I have a counter in WIF
2. I was an ugly looking aircraft and looked obsolete - but wasn't a complete failure.
3. I scored a couple of notable firsts for my service - the first being the basis of a good quiz question, whereas the second was what I was as designed to do (but still impressive).
4. My second feat was done at the extent of my range. I tried something similar (although without the range) a few weeks later and got massacred....
5. I am named after a bird

Okay here's another variation on a theme:

Which Officer am I (none of which have WIF Counters)?

Quiz 1.
1. I served in the Navy

Quiz 2
1. I served in the Army

Quiz 3
1. I served in the Air Force
Do Leaders in Flames counters count for this quiz?

Lets call it historical person that was active during WWII.

Edit: The reason that I called it a historical person was because I didn't think it fitting to say officer when I included a politician.

Is the correct answer. The first FAA plane to shoot down a German aircraft. It was intially thought that the Skua scored the first kill but the Battle's kill was earlier (althouh reported later). The attack on Konigsberg and Scharnhorst were the other two events in the clues.
