Going to send the disk drives to a specialist data recovery service as losing both backup and main in 24 hours is a tad suspicious (
Agreed. Really sorry to hear this. You and Micheal within a couple of weeks of each other. Obviously, WitPAE is tough on hardware.

Houston we have a problem

Full Desktop meltdown and backup external (full) 500 GB drive both gone

Takena week to get a laptop up and runing to get my turns going again
Initially looks like all my scen and ai files are gone including May 42 version and all the new development AI scripts.

Going to send the disk drives to a specialist data recovery service as losing both backup and main in 24 hours is a tad suspicious (main HD sourinding noise whnds pretty bad it has a major genever I try to boot from it so I think its toast as for th back up we will see)

I know just how you feel!

John had a similar problem. There is a very vicious virus out there that looked like killing John's laptop and desktop. Same symptoms as yours. There is a fix to this, but it needs some executables on a DVD; and it has an app that restores file structures and the desktop, but it is not simple.

It blanks out your desktop; kills every toolbar; and acts just like a disk crash (and often like a program crash).

If you think you have this, shoot John a PM. He has addressed this particular virus and knows how to medicate it.

It wasn't that damn "System Fix" Trojan was it??

My teenage daughter used to go to her school friends for IT advice (such as peer to peer music download sites are were perfectly safe...) rather than go to her fuddy duddy dad with a software engineering degree who told her lots of things she didn't want to hear.

Three weeks ago she picked up the "System Fix" Trojan which totally incapacitated her machine as you describe. Fortunately for me it was a school loan netbook which was due to be returned a week later anyway. We just gave it back early to the school for their IT department to format and re-image!!! [:D] (though she did lose everything on it - fortunately the important stuff had been backed up).

Thank goodness she didn't infect the home PC with thousands of dollars worth of applications and heaps of irreplaceable data which I would have had to painfully recover. Hopefully she has learned a valuable lesson about IT security and that I was not raving on about nothing. It was cruel but I did use the opportunity to rub it in. [;)]

If this trojan is what you have, my reading of the internet indicates your data is recoverable but it is finicky to do and you may be better off engaging professional assistance if you are unsure what you are doing.

Cheers,
Reg.

Uh oh, Firefox has a spell checker!! What excuse can I use now!!!

No the main HD had a mechanical failure - The 2ndry was dropped by my 4 year old god daughter (never ever have bright covered passport backup HD's)

I didnt realise she dropped it (or that she had it until it was to late)

(and yes I should have child proofed the house but hey kids are only in my hose twice a year how was I to know !!!)

Nik I am going to have to start from scratch - we are trying to get back up and running but the HD is off with a specialist for checking but no idea if it will work or not

I'm guessing from the amount of time gone by the drive is kaput.
Would you have even a glimmer of an estimate to give?

Thanks.

Historiker and I are going to take Nik's May '42 scenario out for a spin in a PBEM match. He has corrected the missing ships that were in phantom TF's and I've granted him a few hundred extra planes for the Jap pools. He's also moved the Yamato and Musashi arrival dates up to what he considers correct. I don't care. More targets, earlier. [8D]

It seemed that the ASW changes to tone down the "Uber E's" are already included in the scenario, so it looks like we're ready to start shooting. There will probably be an AAR from the Japanese side, but still unsure about my Allied side.... time and all. If we find anything significantly "wrong" we'll post about it here.

I have it on my list but havn't gotten too into it yet. Andy was (is) the AI script expert. I've been looking at the GC 41 scripts to try to get a feel for things. May be a while yet.

On the bright side....i'm in the middle of a PBEM playtest which has generated some good feedback on adjustments...mainly to the Japanese economy to prevent from shutting down quickly.

Very excited about this scenario, but, I only play against the AI, anxiously awaiting the scripts.

I am in a PBEM right now with this scenario. If you do get back to this one let me know and I will give you my thoughts.

Im playing this scenario via pbem as Japan. Ive played through 7-42 and have an observation. My subs have launched torpedoes approximately ten times total. Most are out on patrol in major convoy or base areas. They get attacked quite often. I have sub doctrine turned off. It could be me but I thought I would mention it. The Allied player has good torps and seems to sink my ships every turn.
