CAP doesn't fly

Post by wobbly »

Had a bothering occurance in my last PBEM turn. Had set 2 sqds of zeros to fly LRCAP above an air combat TF. THe allies send in some hudsons - 1 sqd - and there are no planes flying cap. Luckily only 1 bomb strikes my carriers but why didn't I have protection?
The weather was not an issue, no "air operations not flown on tf 2 because of weather" and in either case i thought CAP was unaffected. Would seem silly if my CAP couldn't fly yet his bombers could find and bomb in the same weather conditions...

I don't know if this is relevant, but one of the most recent patches radically decreased the effectiveness of land-based LRCAP over Air Combat TFs. As I recall, LRCAP is 80% ineffective over such TFs. (For this reason, I rarely rely on LRCAP over CVs.) The rationale is related to difficulty coordinating with CVs operating in radio silence.

Nonetheless, I'm not sure that means the LRCAP would never show up at all, as in your case; anyone else know?

Yep, land based cap is reduced in capability over an Air TF - these however, were 2 sqds of zeros off my air TF.

Hmm. Did the LRCAP originate from the same hex as the "target" Air Combat TF, or from elsewhere? If it's carrier-based LRCAP protecting a TF in the "owning" carrier's own hex (range=0), then I admit I'm puzzled too. On the other hand, if the LRCAP originated from an Air Combat TF in another hex, maybe it's subject to the same inefficiency as land-based LRCAP? Just guessing here.

No the LRCAP was coming off the TF it was defending- range 0. Just happy it didn't result in massive damage. i have the save files - wonder if Matrix would be interested.

Well, then I'm stumped too. Assuming no serious problems with fatigue or morale, it does seem odd that no planes flew CAP.

I don't know for sure that LRCAP from a carrier wouldn't also suffer a penalty (I realize that makes no sense and would seem to be a bug). A save would be very helpful (if we can end turn on the save and the game goes right to the execution phase). Please send to 2by3@2by3games.com as soon as you can as we are working on patch items this week. Thanks.
