Why did the shipsets change so much from Disant Worlds original thru expansions?

Post by jpinard »

After watching most of Das2468's great videos something occurred to me. I was seeing ships in his game I wasn't seeing in mine. So I looked in the Customization folder and saw a host of different shipsets that are apparently from the original game. Funny thing is I LOVE the original ships, much more than the new ones.

So why did they get changed? It seems to me the original ships were much more identifiable vs. the new ones.

Hmmm I've been copmaring screens and it looks like the old ships are of much lower quality compared to the new ones. But some of the older ones have a bit more character and stand out against all the new ships. Interesting!

Some of the original ships had nice characters, others models were rather bad. A space port design comes to mind.

For legends, WoodMan got the job to update all shipsets after creating a great mod with new ships.

This is the thread of his RotS mod:

The original ships had something like 7 ship sets shared between about 20 races. Some time after ROTS WoodMan begun a mod creating brand new ships from the original artwork for each individual race.
Unlike yourself they were universally considered awesome upgrades and a LOT of people were using them even in mods.

Some time before Legends Codeforce bought the ship sets off of WoodMan and he was hired to finish more sets off and create a Carrier for each.

You are able to switch back to the original ships within the Theme menu by choosing Distant Worlds Original I believe it is called. I don't think you will stick to that theme for long though [;)]

Ah ha! So THAT'S where Woodman got the loot to fill his cargo bays with vintage Romulan Ale from!

(Which started Mr. Data's Ale addiction I might add)

The mod started off as a replacer for Zenox ships. If you look at the original Zenox shipset it seems like perhaps the work wasn't originally finished or something, those odd low detail starfish things. Then after that it became the idea to give one shipset per race, because in the original there were only 11 shipsets between the 22 races and only 9 between the 20 playable races. Then I just carried on and started to replace everything because I enjoyed working on the ships.

I used the original artwork to make all the new ships I was making. which meant it was fine for Matrix to use them because no non-Matrix resources were used. The download count of the mod itself, before it was removed from the site hosting it, was almost caught up with the "Buy Return of the Shakturi" redirect count on the forum! Some new things were added for the Legends release which were not included in the original mod such as the minor shipsets, another entirely new Zenox and Dhayut set to replace the ones in the mod, the Shakturi and Ancient Guardians sets, the Legendary Pirates.

Although it was originally agreed, I would like to point out that in the end no money actually changed hands and I'm fine with that! Happy just to help and be included, cheers!

That is one Romulan Ale Mystery cleared up... but do not get all comfortable.,... there has to be about 20 more where that came from...

Woodman, you did a brilliant job! It's really neat to hear the story behind this.

I also still like a lot of the original artwork. I wish there was a way to mix and match them better.
I switched to the original theme for a while, but man the Zenox ships were UGLY. I just couldn't stand looking at them.
But I really don't like the new Shakturi ships. The Teekan shipset is a mixed bag. And then some of the others are a bit cartoony I think.
However, overall, I think the legends shipset is a net improvement. I ended up switching back to it, afterall.
I'd like to overwrite the Shakturi and the Teekans though.

I'm working on this right now :)
Will post a mixed set whenever I get it done.

I remember when I first saw the new Human ship set, I immediately fell in love.
It has much more of a Terran feel than the old set. Like classic Earth space ships you'd see in sci-fi movies.

It's strange because one of the first things I think about when I'm deciding whether to play DW or not, is how nice the Human ships are.

The other ships I've seen are nice too, and capture a good 'alien' look depending on the race, but I love the fact that the Human ships
feel grounded; looking how I'd picture Terran ships to look.

What mystery? Yall don't share, so the rest of us have to take it when we can. [:-] It just helps that Mr. Data is already well known for it, so the rest of us can operate in the 'Shadows'. [;)]

Wow....didn't know you related that well with the 'Pirate's Guild' that DATA covertly runs Shark7!

Nevertheless....here's to you (Can't let DATA know where I got this)!
