Spanish Blue Division & Spanish SS Battalion

Working on some scenarios and need info on these Spanish units on the Eastern front. I cannot read Spanish or German so I am hope for some English references.

The Gamers published one of their TCS board games called Black Wednesday, it dealt with a multi-divisonal attack by the Russians on the Spanish defence lines outside of Leingrad, I will see if I can dig it out for you, they should list some sources. Or you could even contact them at

Redleg, there is an excellent book on this very subject; I'm at work so don't remember the title exactly, but it's something like The Blue Division; Hitlers Spanish Volunteers. Will send you all info when I get home, unfortunately I don't have the book in stock at the store

250. Infanterie-Division (División Azul) was formed from Spanish volunteers, most of them had fought in the Spanish Civil War. It was orginally planned to be a Legion but due to the large amount of volunteers it was decided to form a division instead. The first volunteered was sent to Grafenwöhr July 1941 for training before being sent to the Eastern Front Aug 1941.
They saw their first action 12 Oct 1941 at Lake Ilmen and remained on the front near Leningrad until it was disbanded Oct 1943.

Some of the soldiers of this unit later fought in the Spanish Legion (Legion Española de Voluntarios) until that was disbanded Mar 1944. Those who wanted to continue fighting with the Germans later served in Spanische-Freiwilligen-Kompanie der SS 101 and Spanische-Freiwilligen-Kompanie der SS 102.

Spanische-Freiwilligen-Kompanie der SS 101 was formed in Klagenfurt, Austria, Sep 1944 when a company of spanish volunteers was transferred into the Waffen-SS from the Heer.
It was sento to Pomerania Feb 1945 attached to SS Freiwilligen-Panzergrenadier Division Wallonien. The remaining soldiers of the company took part in the battle of Berlin, attached to SS Freiwilligen-Panzergrenadier Division Nordland, fighting very hard in the defense of Möritz Platz (by the Air Force and Propaganda ministries).

Spanische-Freiwilligen-Kompanie der SS 102 was formed in the spring of 1945. The fate of this units is unclear, but it may have fought in the battle of Berlin with Spanische-Freiwilligen-Kompanie der SS 101.
