We only have your word that you assessed the situation correctly.

Hmm, let's see the possible reasons why the "assessment" may not have been as correct as you think.

1. Weather conditions were different on the different days. Probably not the main factor but a possibility.

2. Different altitudes. Probably the major factor here. I would bet you send in the sweeps at a highish altitude, in order to maximise the potential bounce, but send in the bombers at a much lower altitude to maximise their bombing accuracy. The first altitude might have been
  • too high for the training fighters to reach either in absolute terms or in time
  • too high for the training fighters to even see the incoming sweepers

whereas the second, bombing altitude might have been at or close to the altitude of the training fighters and therefore there were no problems for the fighters to see and reach the bombers.

3. The assessment to send in unescorted bombers was faulty anyway because you already knew there were fighters present at the airfield. There are other reasons other than being on training why stationed fighters might not rise to meet a sweep:
  • the defenders might be on LRCAP
  • they may be grounded deliberately to suck you into a CAP trap
  • a rotation of units has occurred, with the new unit having ready fighters whereas the previous unit had them unready

First off, Jocke confirmed his units were set to training and there was no CAP trap set or LRCAP assigned.

Could he have set his units to 'train' at range >1? I wonder if training air units can get 'pulled' over a hex as they would for CAP with a long range setting?

I had the same problem many times in my game over Burma. Sweeps sent in, no CAP encountered.
Then bombers flew in (unescorted) and fighters on training mission attacked them. That happened
several times now and not only over Burma and like you i asked myself why the sweeps did not engage the training fighters
at least randomly. Or why the training fighters engage the bombers and not the sweeps.
Beside this my fighters on training never attacked his unescorted bombers the same way. Seem to be a allies-only-feature...

Do any of you think that a training flight might not engage enemy fighters but would be willing to engage enemy bombers? Just because you send in a sweep
mission, don't expect it to be engaged by all fighters in the area.
I think that the two obligations you have are to be good at what you do and then to pass on your knowledge to a younger person

If you are betting on luck, be sure you'll be dissapointed in at least 50% of the cases...
