OT: USS Enterprise to be scrapped!
I just heard on the TV that the USS Enterprise is to be sold for scrap. Bummer! [&:]
Most likely they are scrapping it so they can reuse the name, just like last time.

That was to be expected, though. Preserving a nuclear-powered vessel as a museum, especially one that has served as long as this incarnation of the Enterprise, must cost a shed-load of money. Still, that was one fine-looking ship.

The Bainbridge and Long Beach are long gone, so I'm not surprised..... The last of the Nuc trio...

At this time there is no ship to be named Enterprise in the planning stages. I do hope that proud name will be continued...

With the way the Navy's been naming their ships the past forty-odd years, the next Enterprise will probably be an AR. Politicians have first dibs on carriers, it seems.

We don't build ARs anymore from what I recall. [:)]
The next class will be the Ford-class. Two have been named (USS Gerald R. Ford and USS John F. Kennedy.) There is an active petition circulating in Washington to name CVN-80 USS Enterprise. I suspect this will be the case. Proposed commissioning date in 2025; CVN-80 will replace USS Eisenhower.
The last seven ships of the Ford class have not been named or slotted.

Many old carrier names have been recycled as cruisers.

True. That was the naming convention for the Ticonderoga/Aegis class. But I don't think Enterprise will ever be anything but a carrier.

Bring on the USS McGovern, USS Mondale and USS Charles Pinckney - may they serve the US better than their namesakes

George McGovern died a far better man than the man who beat him for president. Do a little research on the man's life and get back to us.

Didn't mean to step on toes. Guess it was a poor choice of words on my part - sorry. I just reached for some well-known runners-up for the Presidency, and somehow McGovern is one of the first to come to my mind.

If they keep moving the island further back on these designs, they'll wind up towing it behind the carrier. Note original Nimitz CVN-68 island location to later Nimitz-class carriers then to the artist concept of the Ford

RE: OT: USS Enterprise to be scrapped!
George McGovern was some kind of naval aviator hero in WW2. I am not familiar with the details.

He flew B-24 bombers in Europe http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_McGovern

I was aboard Big E for her 10th Birthday Party. Can't believe it was that long ago.

I don't get to the forums often, but I saw this and had to comment.
Some time ago I bought a documentary from the History Channel entitled "Battle 360 - USS Enterprise" covering the exploits of CV-6 (or CV(N)-6 as she was later known (after the first night mission off a carrier).
To make a long stroy short.....near the end of the series, in an interview with one of the crew from CV-6, it was mentioned that despite a public/political effort to "buy" CV-6 and make her a museum, Enterprise was sold for scrap. The crewmember, IIRC, expressed mixed emoitions - he was sorry to see her go, but happy that she "died" with a modicum of respect, not turned into a "playground" for a bunch of screaming tourist that probably would never truely appreciate what she had done.
Let the Queen Mary, a pleasure craft, continue to be a pleasure craft as a mesuem...let a warship (especially any that saw active duty and was the last place on earth that some men stood) serve it's purpose (and move on).
Just my 2 cents worth

Enterprise will probably be renamed before launch as soon as another prominate politician drops dead and his party will rush to honor him (or her). [:(]
