Actually I havent heard that expression. But let me put it this way, if youre a successful business owner who decides to shut down his business because you dont agree with the regulations on moral grounds, my hat's off to you. You have more balls than I do. If it were me, I would have made money as long as I was able to. But if someone decides to shut down because theyre a chemical manufacturer who cant run his business without dumping runoff in the local river or a Wall St. hedge fund manager who finds the idea of anyone having actual visibility into what the hell youre doing over there simply too abhorrent, then I believe thats the point. Regulations have the characteristic, that they are usually explained as to be necessary to help the people, protect the people, or whatever. While this might be legit in the case of a chemical plant or a water dam, they often are rather the product of the believe people can't take care for themselves - or they are the result of lobbying by special interest groups.
A regulation forbidding motorcycles would make driving more safe, that much is certain. But it would also destroy thousands of jobs in all those businesses that produce motorcycles, the parts for motorcycles, those that sell them, those that repair them. It would also affect the helmet industry, the cycling-wear industry... Always every part from the farmer that can't sell his cow hides any more to the retailer's cleaning woman.
Sure. Some motorcyclists would buy a car instead, not having owned one before. They would also have to rent a parking space in the city, not being able to park where they did so far. But those few extra sales would never make good all those jobs that were destroyed before. Also, not everyone could afford the higher tolls, parking costs, insurance costs...
It's the classic broken window fallancy.

While you know my political pov, you can certainly discuss about the industries and the extent of regulations. But please don't say: regulations have no imapct on the job market!
Yes, but no one is outlawing motorcycles, or guns for that matter. Of course regulations have impact. Theyre designed to have impact. At least the good ones are. And if youre an asbestos manufacturer, well, sorry. My landlord in NY owned a very successful printing business in the 80s. With the advent of the internet and other tech we take for granted now, he stopped being profitable and closed. Sorry.
Now, what in the world are these regulations that everyone is afraid of? I'll tell you honestly, during this campaign I have grown so sick and tired of the silly rhetoric about "job creators" etc that I am simply not able to take the argument seriously anymore. The idea that every single business owner in America will stop hiring because their taxes go up 2.5% is absolutely ridiculous. The idea that they will hire right, left and center if they stop paying taxes entirely is even more ridiculous. Now, I realize that the government can come up with some epic sh!t once in a while. But please tell me what they have actually passed which will cause the gent from Buffalof*ck, ND to not get a job he would have otherwise have had, all other things being equal.
