I would like to see a competing sdk developed. One that would work on Windows, Macs, Linux OS. Maybe Value will invent one since they seem to hate Win 8 too.

Um, OpenGL [:D]

I used Win8 for the first time today, on a machine in my local megastore. A desktop littered with tiles which lack of any logical grouping or visual hierarchy. It's simply confusing and on top of it looks ugly. One can fade-out the Metro UI, but then you get kind of a reduced Win7 environment without start button. The whole thing just doesn't make sense for PC users. Whoever designed it should get fired.

Fortunately, I changed allegiance and purchased a Macbook Pro Retina instead of bothering with another Windows PC.

Well I installed win 8 on an old Vista partition I had. It is nothing more than Windows 7 than with some stupid touch screen interface tagged on to the front. It is a piece of crap and I really dont see where microsoft see their market for this. OK - so they are producing the hardware for this thing to run on and I suspect thats where they see the money at. But for home PC and office users the interface simply is not usable. Yes - when you turn off metro you dont get a start bar (which can be easily rectified if you visit stardock) but everything is still there you just cant find it. Its just a confusing mess that seems to me to alienate the very market that has built microsoft in the first place. Its really inexplicable unless their plan is to really hit the hardware market ala apple and just forget about PC users altogether - who they probably think will still be using xp and win 7 in 5 years time so there is no money in them.

I just dont get where they are aiming this - unless it is to replace all the desktop hardware in offices with their own product - which may be the plan. And windows nine is going to be a completely closed operating system the same as Macs.

I assume the overall idea was to get people used to this Interface, so they hopefully purchase Win mobile instead of Android or iOS devices for the future. Unfortunately, MS doesn't offer a killer feature, neither add something useful from a customers perspective with their new system. The Surface is no match for Nexus 10 or the new iPad and I wouldn't even take a Nokia for free anymore.

As somebody already mentioned, the Metro UI is butt-ugly.

I still think Windows 7 will have a very long shelf life. XP had a longer shelf life than Vista. And Windows 7 has been pretty successful like XP.

XP support is JUST ending and just because a new version of Direct X is coming out doesn't mean it will become the standard for many years to come. I mean DX9 still seems to be the standard, DX 10 for some games but DX11 has been out awhile hasn't it?

I already have a copy of Win8 but not on my main PC so any game developer who makes 11.1 mandatory will see no money from me. I am in the boycotting mood these days so bring it on.

As a rule I skip the even numbered windows.

err literally I skip every second one is what I mean. Skipped millinium, skipped vista, will definitely skip 8.

Amen. I have been trying to make Win 8 work like Win 7 for over a year. BRING IT ON.
