Dave - Question about the ambush option

Post by MarkShot »

Does ambush really convey the semantic's of "ambush" or is it more a fire discipline option especially when combined with DEFEND?

For example, if the option is selected will friendly units which have enemy units within the effective range ring but not the ambush range ring return fire if said enemy units have opened up?

Or is this more of a fire discipline option where friendly units will just refrain from returning fire if the enemy units are beyond the ambush range ring?

Thanks.

The intent here is that the units will refrain from opeing up until the enemy gets within the ambush range. However, other reaction code may kick in before that if the situation warrants. Eg. they may retreat if subjected to a lot of fire. Why don't you try it Mark and see for yourself. [:)]

I understand what "ambush" means in the game. Could you tell me when do you use it exactly? Could you describe me the situation when you most often check the option? Thx everybody!

I use it when I place some short range AT units in blocking positions. I look for built up areas or covered areas where they are not going to be seen till the enemy is close and by using the ambush option I ensure they don't open up till the enemy ios very close.

I almost always tick it when I give a unit a Defend order. I do this on the basis that it is an option for them then - to hold fire until enemy close. Maybe I've been wrong on this.

Bear this in mind. If you have gaps in your line, say 1,000 to 1,500m and you give the units at the edge of these gaps an ambush option then they may just let the enemy walk right through the gap. So it's not always the best option. Also if the enemy have strong short range FP but not so great long range FP and you do, then it's probably best to not select it so you can capitilse on your superiority in long range firepower.

And what about attack? Do you use "ambush" for attack sometime?

It's not available as an Attack option.

Ofcourse, sorry. I should say order "move" with checked options "attack"... do you use "ambush" in this situation? And why?

I've never used Move with ambush checked (nearly always use move with Attack checked). That's an interesting question. Anyone know whhat the effect of that would be?
