Operation Wounded Kangaroo Phase 2 AND Disaster at Mangaia

KB: The KB is making a major raid in the SOPAC area. All convoys and ship are fleeing away from the projected (guessed) course of the 600-lb gorilla. While they are in the area various small islands are being invaded - with an eye toward cutting of Pago Pago and Fiji from reinforcements and supply.

A CVL/CVE raider sneaks near PH and makes a total surprise attack on 10/17 that takes out four YP in a ASW TF 200 miles Lahaina.

On 10/22 IJN SS I-166 nails a xAKL near Cuttack. Calcutta was seeming to risky, would have made better sense to have stayed in position.

On 10/23 IJN SS I-8 attacks a heavily escorted convoy with accompanying ASW TF. SS I-8, hits 10, and is sunk ==> Sub slips beneath the waves. I'll count this one as a kill.

On 10/24 IJN SS I-9 gets a mild beating near Dunedin.

MALAYA:

BURMA: The Japanese reinforcements (5th ID and five Arty units) have shown up at Lashio and they take the measurement of the defenders on 10/26 achieving a 2:1 (1994:853 adjusted, 1703:616 raw, 916:2452 casualties). On 10/27 there is another attack achieving a 1:1 (1344:1063 adjusted, 1552:485 raw, 1012:1342 casualties).

Operation Wounded Kangaroo is in full retreat as the allied air-forces prove incapable of protecting the AUS 7 ID. This is the cool part - the following units arrive at Magwe! When the destination of the unit to be followed changes it didn't change the destination of the following units. The OpFor graciously allowed me to move the units out of the hex before pounding them.

INDIA: North Male falls 10/27. Every bomber in the CBI with the range shifts south.

KB: Prowling around the Southern Ocean between New Zealand and Tahiti.

US CVs: Yorktown is in refit in Auckland and the KB is in spitting distance. Every fighter that can get there is headed to Auckland (almost 200 fighters). The other carriers are laying low at Hobart in Tasmania. Fuel is a significant consideration.

AIR WAR: We find a AV at Raoul Is on 11/2. On 11/3 we'll put another bomb into her.

The other carriers swinging back to south New Zealand to pick up the Yorktown and maybe escort about 5 convoys across the New Zealand-Tahiti gap.

And then... The ASW TF supporting the carriers had been sent to support the "dog pile" tactics I am using on Japanese subs. However I forget to take the CARRIERS OFF FOLLOW!

On 11/7 IJN SS I-176 gets a mild beating from a ASW TF near Mangaia. Then SS I-16 takes severe beating from a ASW TF off Anna: SS I-16, hits 10, and is sunk - Sub slips beneath the waves. We'll paint this one on the conning tower.

On 11/8 IJN SS I-15 gets 15 hits from a ASW TF off PH. "Underwater explosion, debris and oil appear on surface!" I'm not sure if I should count this one or not.

On 11/9 SS S-42 puts a torpedo into the AV that was bombed at Raoul Is. Just heavy damage.

On 11/11 SS S-41 shells a xAKL near Phuket. IJN SS I-156 gets beatup near Portland (not Oregon).

Hi Folks,

Do you think that this air bridge from Nadi to Efate in the face of Japanese air superiority is to gamey? If the OpFor had known what I was doing he could have shut it down. In the real world the OpFor would have known that 60+ transports were flying into Efate every day.

The Saratoga (operating near Penrhyn Is after a refit) swings south to pop a CL near Aitutaki. I'm disappointed in the results, I think a Japanese CV would have smoked the CL and the DD.

I don't think it is gamey - it is up to your opponent to recon your bases and note the numbers of troops seen there.

Re: the carriers stuck in refit, or repairing damage at Aukland - don't forget to put their air groups ashore so they can help defend and will not be wiped out if the KB comes for a port attack. After seeing Enterprise torpedoed near Palmerston North he will likely gather his carriers and head that way.

The OpFor remarked that he had his CAP percentage pretty low to cut down on fatigue and morale loss. These are 'surprise' results that won't be achieved again I'm afraid. However when the PB4Y-1 shows up I might get another bite at the apple.[:)]

It's almost 1943 - Can I go on the offense yet mommy?

I have lost one USN CV to a sub attack and one RN CV to stupidity (sigh). The KB is intact and I think the OpFor is has it organized in two fleet operating within long support (2-3 days) of each other. We are playing quiet China and OpFor has said that he will not attack Russia as he has bought too many units out of Manchuria.

Burma seems possible unless more IJA divisions show up. Fiji and Samoa are strongly held but takeable if the Japanese want to pay the cost. What to do... what to plan for. Is it late enough to discount additional offenses in AUS/NZ and Indian invasions?
