NEW TEST EXE - please try it

Hi all,

We have created new exe which we are hoping will hep us to get more feedback about those crashes which happen when some of you just click on a unit.
As soon as the crash occurs, please go to the following folder:
My documents/My games/Strategic War in Europe/
you will find there file ConsoleOut.txt
please zip it and send to:
doomtrader[at]wastelands-interactive.com

Please include your forum nickname in the mail.

In the file you will find two exe.
One is for those who bought the game at Matrix or Slitherine stores - swie_matrix.exe
Second is for those who bought the game anywhere else place - swie_other.exe

Hi Doomdark,

I have downloaded and run the SWIE_OTHER.exe (twice) but it fails when I run it.
Message:
"The program cannot start because audiere.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem."

Any suggestions?

Still doesn't work for me with W8. Same crash to desktop. Just sent email to doomtrader.

Your suggestion made me realise my mistake: I ran the file from the zip thinking it was a patch rather than an alternative game EXE (audiere.dll is actually present in the gamefolder). So I added SWIE_OTHER.exe to the main folder and ran it from there which at least started the game.

Hi Doomtrader,
I tried the alternative file SWIE_OTHER.exe which unfortunately still leads to the same issue: as soon as I click any unit the game crashes. Tried in Quickstart and a full scenario.

I have attached the zipped consoleout.txt

Can you advise on the next step?

Does anyone with Windows 7 (or earlier has got this problem)?

We have found that deleting all units images (/data/gfx/Units images/) helps under W8.
Now working on the solution.

Hi Doomtrader,

I am running Win8 rather than Win7 or earlier - but can confirm that deleting the Unit Images has indeed stopped the application crashing.
Now both the original EXE and the SWIE_OTHER.EXE run as expected. I have moved a few units and resolved some attacks.

From those errors, which took place late in the game, perhaps you should look at something like failure of the game to close files after use, and then running out of file pointers - something like that.

Now working on the solution.

No issues with Win 7. I tried the other exe and it still crashed, but I then renamed the Unit images folder to bak unit images and now the game works fine. So no need to delete the folder.

I restored my Unit Graphics folder and use the new Matrix EXE file: game worked without crashing through the first two turns of the 1939 scenario.

The new swie_other.exe works for me now with Windows 8 and the unit graphics!

Hi yes,

I am on Win7 and the game crashes. I downloaded the SWIE and put it in the game folder and the other file it requires but says it is missing another file of oentrypoint_adrOpen etc. Starting from the normal launcher the game crashes when I click on a land unit. Thanks for your help in this.

Better news, opening the game directly from program files runs the game without any crashing. I think I had also done other things that were suggested, but now I can actually play the game!

Does not work in either W7 or W8. Keeps blowing up. Reinstalling older version 1.04 with the indestructable Russians in it...[:@]
