OT: Some thoughts that made me laugh last night

Post by temagic »

I was thinking about the mightly Italian warmachine last night and came to think about this fact:

The Germans had their case yellow, case green, barbarossa, etc.

The Japanese conquered all of Malaya, Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia, the Gilberts, half of China, the Solomons and parts of the Aleutians.

And the Italians, well, their planned conquest of the small island of Malta was called 'Operation Hercules'

Made me chuckle...

Not really.... but:

Operation Herkules was the German code-name given to a planned but never-executed Italo-German invasion of Malta during World War II (the Italian code-name was Operazione C3).

Klink, Oberst

P.S. The Germans always used 'peculiar' wordings for later operations; things about Operation Leopard for the 're-conquest' of Leros 1943, Unternehmen Rösselsprung, an attempt to capture Tito. One could write an essay about all the ops names ;)

You just officially butchered and murdered my joke... You could not let it live, ey? Well, like they say, only truth can never be hidden forever. Thanks for clarifying the factual errors though. I just remembered from memory and didn't google or wikipedia it before I posted.

Aww, come on Kamerad! Talking about Ops names; some interesting links:

THAT made me *giggle*
By the end of the war, the practice was well-established on all sides, with code names given for everything from post-war Nazi insurgencies (Operation Werwolf) to psychological mail campaigns (Operation Cornflakes) to fake missions altogether (Operation Mincemeat). In most cases, names were chosen by mid-level officers in charge of planning, but frequent interventions took place when tagging significant campaigns.

Happy Turkey Day btw,

Churchill ordered his Generals to ensure operation names were "STRONG WORDS'

Men would fight better for "Overlord" or "Supercharge" rather than "Playground" or "Handkerchief"

(Paraphrased, I'll find the exact words)

Interesting, the UK seems to have shifted since then. The Falklands was Operation Corporate.
