Only bombardments in China but the asphyxiation continues.

There are now seen 3 x IJN subs around Christmas Island, 1 off Hilo, 1 near Vaitupu , 1 approaching Fiji, 1 near Efate, and 7 around Ndeni. I suppose that a wave of repairs has been finished!

In about a day the needed escorts will arrive at Abadan and the tankers will make for Karachi. That trip will include some small and very small tankers that will remain in India for service near the front. The xAKLs will undergo repair and refit.

The convoy with substantial base forces for Ndeni is on site and beginning to unload. The Battle Fleet - still unspotted! - is moving to a position 40nm NE Reef Islands, 80nm NE Ndeni. The lack of Imperial subs there should last about a day. Although they will have to move about, they should be on station long enough to also cover the invasions of the Reef and Duff Islands.

Enterprise had some problems with flooding the past few days, but about had it under control when she and her cohorts made port at Pearl Harbor. Enterprise plus 5 heavy cruisers and 3 destroyers are all entering the shipyard and will refit. Set on high priority Enterprise's repair is projected to take 58 days, but after adding refit and then subtracting the ships that finish ahead of her... who knows? CA Minneapolis will finish refitting there in about 2 days. CA Quincy needs another 2 1/2 weeks at Auckland, but will require less travel time as she is closer to the battle zone. Sangamon, the first of the Sangamon class CVEs is leaving Flint Island for the area of Fiji. She (and here 2 sisters trailing behind) still need to train pilots and so will not be committed to front line duty until ready or necessary.

Spot the subs! Win valuable prizes!

The CVEs in use now have a fighter squadron (18 planes) plus 1/3 of a dive bomber squadron. Except Long Island, which can only hold the fighter squadron. The new CVEs just working up have their own fighter squadrons plus a (small) torpedo bomber squadron.

So I guess the answer is with attack planes but mostly with fighters. I'm not sure that I would go raiding with them, but they will fight carrier battles along side the fleet CVs if needed.

Is that what you meant?

The changing status quo in China.

The base forces are all but totally ashore at Ndeni. With luck the supplies will finish tomorrow as well. Tomorrow night the 41st ID will begin loading on a different convoy now approaching. Reef Islands and Duff Islands will both be seized tomorrow. The Battle Fleet is moving to 80nm west of Ndeni. The surface groups will overrun a sub but that can't be helped. Hopefully they are not intercepted.

I began wondering if perhaps the IJN carriers would head for a surprise raid in the Indian Ocean after showing the flag near Ndeni. I think it's a little early for this to be them, but...

We lost 10 x Wildcat and 2 x SBD against 2 x Tojo, not good. Meanwhile, the possible carrier group in the Indian Ocean has vanished.

Our carriers did successfully evade the IJN subs, now 80nm from the nearest demon sighted. Where to now? South and west 80nm. This will provide only minimal cover to Ndeni. However, the carriers known presence should already be forestalling any direct attack aimed at the convoys, and this move will thwart the subs. BTW there are now 8 IJN subs seen around Ndeni. Two of them are at the Fleet's location of yesterday and two more 40nm from there (no doubt closing in). Seaplane support is moving to both Reef Islands and Duff Islands.

Akagi has officially come off of the sunk ships list. There was also an aerial sighting of one of our ASW groups near Karachi, so the subs have returned to the edge of the world.

Here is the official list of carriers sunk thus far.

That possible IJN carriers sighting in the Indian Ocean a couple of days ago is still a mystery.

Our carriers and convoys evaded all the Empire's subs. Now the Battle Fleet will withdraw, making a move westward across the Coral Sea as it does so. This move is purely misdirection, and the fleet will change course when well out of Imperial search range. Hopefully resources will be moved and fuel will be wasted.

Reef Islands will commence search base operations tomorrow, Duff Islands the day after. Ndeni airfield will probably increase in size tomorrow to level 2. A third fighter squadron, this one equipped with the P-39D model, has been moved in temporarily over stacking the field. Luganville is size 5 already.

Our light cruiser force patrolling the gap between Palmyra-Johnston-Baker has bee sighted. Naval search shows nothing so that might be a sub-based aircraft. They will take the opportunity to refuel at Palmyra.

Two more hits reported by our aircraft against subs near Ndeni. Our carriers were not known to be scouted this turn and will head south. The big tanker convoy made Karachi without loss. In two days a couple of xAKs with escort will leave the Persian Gulf and run the gauntlet.

On the same day that the 1st Fleet Advance Base Force finishes unloading at Noumea the port maxed out at size 7.

Our ASW group is all right, two ships will repair engine damage at Pearl Harbor on their way to increase the ASW strength at Christmas Island. CL Richmond and DD Woodworth were already on their way to patrol that general area so they will run interference for the valuable troop and tanker convoys nearing the area where Gokoku Maru was encountered. CA Minneapolis and three DDs are heading to patrol area to the west of that in case she makes an attack in the convoy lanes and then tries to exit that direction.

The elements of the battle fleet have not been sighted on their way to refuel at sea.

Special Alert: Mk14 Torpedoes Now With 20% More KABLAMMO In Every One!

Here is the January 1st Intel Screen with the orders sent in for tomorrow's turn.

Really nice to have torps that explode more often.  20% may not sound like much, but it means they will now explode about 45% of the time.  Instead of a constant stream of duds, you now only have a stream of duds:).  But the IJN will not breathe easier with all those subs out there firing away!

Go out there and sink someone:)!

Only this ground combat in China, but the Empire's hordes are continuing to push in past their conquest of Patung.
Ground combat at 73,49 (near Kweiyang)

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 4228 troops, 32 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 156

Defending force 15802 troops, 89 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 467

Assaulting units:
4th Ind.Mixed Regiment
4th Tank Regiment

Defending units:
50th Chinese Corps
5th Chinese Cavalry Corps
56th Chinese Corps
48th Chinese Corps
79th Chinese/B Corps
Wasp: 2 weeks
Enterprise: 1.5 months
Saratoga: 2.3 months

Copahee: 1 day

South Dakota: 3 months (including estimate for 2/43 refit)
North Carolina: 10 days
Washington: 10 days

Oklahoma: 6 months

Other carriers and battleships are due for scheduled refits. Cruisers and destroyers are rotating through refit as practical. My thoughts at this time are to use the active carriers for a Gilberts adventure prior to putting them in for refit. Southern Solomons would come just after the AP-AK to APA-AKA conversions in March. March is also when the USN carrier squadrons reorganize, and I am a little worried about what happens to squadrons that are on board carriers when that happens. The last game I had where I got that far, what happened was one dive bomber squadron and pilots just vanished into the pools. The problem then of course is the limit of 12 replacement planes per week for the remaining squadron, and the up to 14 day wait time for pilots to arrive. An alternative is to put the squadrons on land just before this happens and disband one squadron into the other (that can not be done on board carriers). That way the planes and pilots are all available when the reorg takes place.

I know that Michael made changes to the code since the last time I went through this, but I have still not experienced the new code. Anybody have comments or info on that?

Here is a look at that patch of ocean where the IJN AMC is prowling for prey.

What I'm trying to avoid is having the (then) sole DB squadron on each carrier at half-strength for two weeks while planes and pilots come back from the pools. Do you remember how it happened?

In return we lost an AM on ASW duty near Ndeni. Sometimes you get the bear, sometimes the bear gets you. That's why they call it 'hunting' and not 'shopping'.

These folks are on an unknown mission.

Near Bombay a gaggle of I-boats sank 4 merchants as ASW attacks by the roving groups simply failed to keep their heads down. In return, near Ndeni and old USN S-boat sank an I-boat.

There is a sighting in very bad weather at Tabiteuea of 7 ships including 2 x tankers. I don't see tankers being at Tabiteuea for any reason, so those might be carriers. Supply and troop movement operations in the Ellice and Phoenix Islands are being suspended until the possible threat clears. The Battle Fleet is just finishing fueling (a small cruiser group tomorrow) and will begin moving toward the area.

Allied blood did not flow near Bombay today. Several hits were had on the Empire's Assassins in those waters, but none appeared too serious. An aerial hit was seen on a sub near Ndeni and another near Christmas Island.

Just FYI, I'm still getting confirmation reports of enemy ships sunk in March of '42.

That TF at Tabiteuea has resolved to 3 x PB and 1 x TK. I still doubt the TK but it looks like either a resupply mission or an evacuation. The Battle Fleet is still making its way to the area, but intent on providing cover for the small convoys bringing the remainder of the infantry battalions to the Ellice Islands. There were some support weapons that did not fit on the APDs and the first runs of larger ships brought in small base forces to two of the islands.

A troop convoy and a TF built around battleship Tennessee have 5/5 and 7/7 detection levels, respectively at Umnak. Supplies should be fully ashore tomorrow and the convoy will make its way back to the West Coast under Tennessee's watchful eye. DLs were 3/3 yesterday, so this could just be sub(s), or perhaps that surface raider?

There has been an xAK and a DD in TF at Milne Bay for quite some time. Perhaps they are bait, but raids on the port have been quite successful. Tomorrow we will send another with sweeps ahead of it, and with Beaufighters at low altitude (Naval Attack orders) out of Cooktown. They barely have the range but are trained in the art. Let's see if we can keep nipping at the fringes to keep the Empire on their toes.
