We have about 70 days fuel,6 days oil 130 days resources in the home islands.
We have enough HI banked to last around 120 days. We are still making more than we are using.
Recent capture (and hopefully future capture) of oil fields in China will give us a bit more resilliency.
We have / are moving all the oil and fuel being produced.
Recently upgraded the shipyard in Manila to 40 repair in prep of loosing access to Singapore and Sorebaya and expecting Naval battles in the Philipines.

China
The focus here is taking Lanchow with its 91 oil.
Andrew has built a new "great wall" covering the central plain, however he may be also planning an offence towards Sian as some large forces are moving from the centre that we, we need to be careful that we don't get caught....
With around 200 bombers and 200 fighters in the area we have control of the air, except over Chungking which is defended by spitfires and where lots of aircarft are flying in supply. Need to deal with that "soon"... Lanchow comes first.
1 - 8 Mar 1944 ---- Sumatra
Until about the 3rd it was quiet. Many of our airgroups upgraded to 49 strong units and we rearanged training squadrons etc.
About then we caught the first sniff of enemy forces leaving Ceylon and heading south. The next day it was confirmed and our CV force (less two in drydock in Singapore) conducted the last plane and pilot replenishment and put to sea.
We were / are execting Andrew to bring a lot of stuff and move as a "death star" to Sabang to unload more engineers, supply etc.
Our plan was / is to try and coord land and Naval air, to only strike when he is in Sabang hex.
Until then we have been hitting both the airfield and port of Sabang. The airfield is well closed and the port is at about 70% damaged, that should help slow his unloading... keeping him in the target area.
On the 8th the situation is as below. During the days combat we get a sub trop hit on:
CV Soryu, Torpedo hits 1 (10 Sys damage 39 float)
CS Mizuho, Torpedo hits 1 (1 Sys, 9 float)
But we get two subs in return (the area around Sabang is thick with them.
The main body of the enemy stays 1 hex outside our trigger line, except for two ASW groups, with smallish strikes we manage to bad two modern DD's:
Japanese aircraft
A6M5b Zero x 40
B6N2 Jill x 18
Japanese aircraft losses
B6N2 Jill: 10 damaged
B6N2 Jill: 1 destroyed by flak
On the ground we have been slowly pushed back until finally at Langsa we counterattack his leading armour before the main body arrives Our casulties are high to a couple of our fragmented forces... this should give him pause to think.

Now onto the Map.
The plan is for massed ground based aircraft to sweep Sabang with followup strikes from 140 odd land based DB, 130 TB and our strike aircraft from the CV on the TF as they unload. At the same time Helens with bomb the port in case he tries to disband stuff into port...
Prior to this we will try to disrupt the night time phase with night attacks... We have also been laying mines.

... holding our breath.
Stopping them cold? Decisive actions...
Or a big maskirowka? 30% feint, 30% real action, 30 % reserves... HE was the last one who post in your opponent's aar.
How many CVs did you count there?
Thanks Wuffer, well the results are in. I will post the full Combat report below.
We do pretty good around Sabang, mines hit a coouple of ships, not sure how well our SCTF broke up enemy TF as it came in certainly a lot of reacting. In the end it mostly died loosing CA Aoba CL Noshiro and 4 DD's, damaging a fair bit in return.
Two more lots of sub strikes puts Soryu under In the resulting days flying only about half our CV aircraft flew, rather annoying.
Our land based DB and TB do good though. It looks like he has only a small CVL force about 3 hex out from Sabang they don't put up a huge CAP which our sweeps easily brush asside leaving the strike aircraft free range over his shipping aruond Sabang. The Oscars do a great job of busting up LST's!
We get the BB Valient and a fair few transports, with more badly damaged, however a fair bit of stuff got ashore, and more is still unloading, so effectively a draw really, we can't stop him from doing this.
Suspect his main CV forces are further back or coming around the flank to try and hit our expected depleated CV forces...
Lots of action in the East DEI as well. Two strong SCTF supported by a strong CVE TF sticks its head into the lions den... we loose a fair few aircraft but get torp hits on 3 BB's. He sinks two small TK convoys and trashes the oil facilities at Babo.

This is the East DEI, he is slowly creeping forward here... delay delay delay. The loss of access to these oilfields is very annoying, they have been useful.

10 March 1944 - Begining of the end...
Well day two of the attacks on the reinforcement convoys around Sabang were not as good
Combination of reasons, our strike aircraft flew before the multiple sweeps (about a third aborted though which is good) our CV force again barely flew (probably a good thing) and Andrew threw all his CV fighters on CAP and put about 200 P47D into the heavily damaged Sabang. We lost over 500 aircraft.
We did manage to get two more DD's.
Next turn we will send in two SCTF and two BB Bombardment forces to try to clear Sabang and trap the P-47 on the ground... bit of a forlorn hope though. Our air will only sweep while the strike groups repair, replace and recover planes and pilots.
In the East DEI near Dobo about 70 Nells suffered 50% losses to sink two CVE's.
If only the game ended in 1943, eh? Still, you have not lost CVs or even too many surface assets. What is your ability to replace the pilots?
Big picture, he will shut down the oil fields one by one with 4Es and eventually re-capture much of the DEI. Then it will be 1946. He will have to make the big leap to the Marianas or the Kuriles in order to win, and I don't see it happening. You could argue he can take the DEI, then the PI, the Okinawa, but that's a long slog for the time he has remaining.
Well our TF's went in and failed to break through to either the transports or the airfields, there were just too many enemy TF. During these combats we gave about as good as we got back.
During the day though we last 3 BB's to aubs and airstrikes when they didn't run fast enough.
In the DEI we got andother CVE.
The end of day score was:
5 Japanese BB
1 CL
6 DD
vs
1 CVE
3 DD
3 Subs
Both sides have lots of damaged ships, we may loose a CA and 1-2 DD's.
We lost 157 aircraft vs 43.
Andrew also trashes the port at Bangkok, not sure why, maybe he thinks we are bringing forces / supplies in through there...
Here is the CR, need to really think hard now...

Strengths
Our fleet has been badly hurt; however we still have:
8 CV (1 light damaged, 1 medium)
1 CVL
6 CVE
5 BB (1 damaged, 1 upgrading)
8 CA (1 mod damaged)
10 CL (1 mod, 2 upgrading)
3 CS
90 DD (6 damaged 1 badly).
Our airgroups are in good shape, except for Naval strike aircraft. A real numbers weakness in Naval fliers though. Our fighters just can't handle the P47 though
Our ground forces are in excellent shape and reasonably balanced and positioned.
Andrew is starting to run out of time unless he can do something really bold...
Weakness
Fuel and oil. Supply is a bit of a problem.
Threats
He now has a firm position at Sabang. However we have a decent force blocking him. They should hold for a few weeks to a month.
From Sabang he can now bring 4E to bear on Palembang, but still can't escort from there so he needs to continue to advance or risk loosing lots of 4E to our fighters...
From Sabang he can jump down the Sumatra coast. We have small garrisons well dug in and can reinforce them if we choose. However we can't stop, only delay.
He can probably move on Java as well and link up with the forces in the East DEI.
Opportunities
If he advances in less than massive strength we may be able to pick off forces. By forcing him to concentrate we can slow him down.
The enemy forces in the East DEI are a particular vulnerable place at the moment...
Overall Intent
We need to try to keep the fuel/oil flowing as long as possible.
We need to try to keep the ground and airforces fighting, and not caught / trapped behind lines where they become irrelevant.
At the moment I see two broad courses of action.
COA 1 Defend forward hard forcing delay, however risking a breakthrough and possibly loosing forces by getting them trapped.
COA2 Pulling back now and occupying a srong defensive line (but potentially giving up some / most of the oil fields).
Regardless now is the time to pull fuel from the SWPAC and pull out more troops, in particular to the DEI
Would like to try and hold the oil fields of Borneo if possible...
Not sure how to defend the Philipines, so many bases that can be landed on... Maybe just focus on Luzon?

With the levels of fuel and oil you have now, plus not too much HI to rely on, he may not need to get to bombing range of the Home Islands to shut down the industry. Luckily he may not know your remaining levels. It seems like time for extreme conservation of fuel as well as extreme protection of the oilfields at all costs, but of course that's tough. Losing the BBs is hard, but at least now you'll use less fuel. [:D]
How long would you predict your current supply of fuel/oil would last based on industry as it is now and projecting slightly less consumption by ships?
ORIGINAL: Cribtop
If only the game ended in 1943, eh? Still, you have not lost CVs or even too many surface assets. What is your ability to replace the pilots?
Big picture, he will shut down the oil fields one by one with 4Es and eventually re-capture much of the DEI. Then it will be 1946. He will have to make the big leap to the Marianas or the Kuriles in order to win, and I don't see it happening. You could argue he can take the DEI, then the PI, the Okinawa, but that's a long slog for the time he has remaining.
Plus, Kamis will activate soon...
Is he not within close enough range of Saigon now to activate kamis? I did see in the combat report one Oscar pilot chose to 'die for the emperor.' He is 17 hexes from Saigon now, so they should be active according to michaelm's comment below in linked thread.
ORIGINAL: michaelm
Base within 20 sea hexes of BASE_TOKYO, or BASE_TAKAO or BASE_SAIGON. Not counting bases in China or Tibet.
The Kamis are 20 SEA hexes, so needs to be down around Singapore before they activate. Am training pilots to be Kami's already...
12 March 1944
After a lot of thinking and discussion we decide that we will continue to defend forward with ground troops while our air protects the important industrial / oil / fuel areas.
A lot of stuff will now be moved around, mainly by air, such as airHQ, and making sure we have remnants of units well back.
Starting to evacuate shipping from Singapore and moving stuff towards Java to slow him there.

He sweeps Bangkok with P-38 and P-47. We eat the P38 (as the r model Frank get the height advantage) but loose to the P-47 (they get the height advantage). I think the P38 also faced one of our better units. A sample:

Our foces retreating from Chiang Mai are now one turn away from near safety. They are under massive daily attacks but the jungle is their friend.

We bomb Lanchow causing about 400 casulties then the attack goes in. Result is better than expected! Will rest a day then try a shock attack. Taking this base with its 90 oil will be a huge bonus for the Japanese war effort.

What are your pools and production numbers for your modern fighters like the George and Frank?? I've just hit '44 and dread the arrival of the P-47D25s. [:(] Which bombers, Army and Navy, are the best to get their torpedoes to launch?? Is speed the determining factor more than range??
Signed,
Novice Japanese player getting into '44 for the first time. [:D]
The "r" model Frank is my favorite at the moment, was doing about 300 a month, but now turned back on the full capacity of 500. The Tojo IIc does ok at forward bases and the Oscar II for Naval attack (although I may try the "r" Frank in that role as well). Height, numbers and pilot skill all count!
George is much better than the Zero model 5. Waiting for the 5 model George, but we stuffed up engine research on the Ha-43 (have two large factory's rather than several ones in the 30's).
Bombers, Helen IIb is good, but not a lot of choice Wish we had more Emily units. Have kept about 4 units in Ann single engined bombers for use in China.
Been using Nell, soon will try Frances.
We really struggling with IJNAF pilot numbers, have training units sitting around with no pilots (I don't like drawing them forward too much). Have oodles of IJAAF pilots though. So recently puting the George further bank and having the Frank do all the fighting on the front.
For the future have Shinen, Ki-83, Peggy (Torp version)and Grace all underway.
Am "banking" 80 exp pilots at the moment, want to have some real "killer" units when Shinden comes.
I'm looking forward to seeing your experiances and thoughts!
Thanks Cribtop, was pretty confident the enemy engineers were dead or disabled. We took it without any further damage

Mixed turn where we take Lanchow with it's 90 oil, defeat an allied Motor Bde in the jungle with the trrps that retreated from Chiang Mai , but suffered and unexpected blow at Moulmein!
Indicators and Warnings
The dropping of the forts at Moulmein means we have to start pulling back from the Thai Coast now, and speed up the prep for the defence of Singapore and the Vietnam/ China border...

The good news is that we handly defeat the Allied troops who tried to cut us off from our lines:
Ground combat at 58,55 (near Uttaradit)
Allied Deliberate attack
Attacking force 3180 troops, 64 guns, 114 vehicles, Assault Value = 137
Defending force 11002 troops, 133 guns, 26 vehicles, Assault Value = 155
Need to keep killing UK squads where ever possible like this.
At Moulmein we are bombed by about 250 4E bombers, which cause almost no damage real or psychological to our troops (disruption etc , even after the attack, is low). Then the attack goes in, unexpectedly it he gets 2:1, dopps the forts although his casulties are significant...
