Ammo Handling

Always wondered why USN personel did not utilize protective gear vs the Royal Navy regarding ammunition handling....any thoughts?
It seems that the USN personel use gear for there larger guns but not AA.

Well it is flash protection but I don't think it was necessarily protection against their own ammo but from enemy ordinance. Any one who has ever worked with those heavy gloves on can tell you that they are very clumsy and would slow down the rate that you could move ammo. Also the sailor on the British ship is working in cold weather. Once again, having been there, handling metal objects in frigid weather is not easy on the hands. And, wearing heavy gloves in warm weather is just as uncomfortable.

Not to say that the flash protection was not a good idea. It was.....

The gear that Jack is wearing is anti-flash gear, designed to prevent burns from explosions. When I was in the DC party we always closed up to action stations in anti-flash.

Here's Jolly Jack all dressed up with once-only suit and gas masks in belts around their waists.

Most of the RN's work was in Northern climates.
Most of the USN's work was in tropical climates.
Heat loading to rapid heat exhaustion likely played into the differences on policy.
