In college, our place kicker and I were good buddies (I was our long snapper, too), and he was from Istanbul. I would always tell him that I know it as Constantinople. He would always get a kick out of it.

I feel good about myself when someone that is not from here talks about their home country, and I know where it is at, and the capital for example...

Gunta, from Riga, works at Dillons here in town. When I told her I know where that was at she was very impressed. She said that most people she runs into do not care about anything but their world.

I didn't have the heart to tell her I usually take it when I am playing as Poland in EUIII...[8|]

I really would say that playing war themed games with a map, has really helped me improve and appreciate my knowledge of the world, outside of my own world.

My wife and I are currently listening to the audiobook version of Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. So far Canton Island, Howland Island, Funafuti, Nauru, Palmyra - check! It's the story of Louis Zempirini (spelling?), an USAAF bombardier assigned to B-24s.

BTW I highly recommend this book. And as the narration is especially good (Edward Herrmann), I specifically recommend the audiobook version. The account of the low level attack on Nauru, the battle with fighters afterward, the trip back to Funafuti (that's right!), and the return air raid on Funafuti are simply mind blowing.

I wholeheartedly sympathise Jeff!!

I nearly got into a full blown argument with a work colleague who was listening to me recounting the latest turn of my campaign against Dirty Harry ( yes, I'm that boring ) to a colleague who is actually interested in AE, and every time I said Saigon, he would say 'Its actually Ho Chi Minh City now'.

This constant petty 'correcting' nearly caused a fracas.
How sad is that!![:)]

When I visited LST-325 earlier this year I gained a new appreciation of the load they could carry. I thought to my self "So, this is how much room 1750 cargo points is" and "I wonder why the 48 man transport capacity is not noted on the the LST data sheet, that would help, everything you can stuff people and things into with a transport TF helps"

I have wondered how many supply points I could get into the back of my Grand Caravan.

Also had xmas topic chitchat going on at work and a colleague mentioned that there is a Christmas Island. I told him that there are actually two and launched AE in order to show him on the map - instead of using something easier and faster like Google maps or so... Does this qualify as addiction?

Even funnier, she ended up marrying another friend of mine whose last name starts with L. So she became CVL. [:D]

Yes. It should have occurred to me to mention that at the time, because when I asked her if she knew, I also ran through the possible changes to her initials if she married guys we knew because, in addition to her future husband, with whom she was only casually involved at the time, we also knew two guys whose last names start with E and H. We didn't know any guys whose last name started with A, B, or N, though.
