My problem came back. The video drivers have been updated. the game installs normally. on the initial screen of the game at Pearl Harbor, if I press the windows key on the keyboard the computer goes to the desktop as it should. When I press the windows key to go back to the game, the screen comes up to the pearl harbor as I left it, but the font has gotten larger with green color and is squished indicating it is too big.
The problem that I had with the data going to black squares is still happening. sometimes the whole screen goes black, and then comes back with the data corrupted.
another thing is that this game is 32 bit and my windows 8 is 64 bit.

The black background on text is a DirectX thing that happens when video memory gets messed up. Usually quitting the game and restarting clears the problem. If that doesn't work, rebooting the computer almost always does.

Have you tried setting the compatibility mode in windows? That helps get things to work in Win 7 and 8 in many instances.
