DW Legends Public Beta v1.7.0.20 Available

Post by Andrew Loveridge »

Hi Everyone,

We have a new public beta for DW - Legends (this is NOT for customers who are still playing the original Distant Worlds or DW - Return of the Shakturi). There is a new Beta version in the Members Club. This fixes a crash, corrects some issues with saves, and improves AI ship building.
It has been updated to address some crashes and lag reported in previous versions.

Please try it, and let us know how it works for you.

v1.7.0.20 – January 30th, 2013
    Fixes and Improvements[/b] [ul]
  • Several in-game screens open much faster now. Optimized screens include: Construction Yards, Ships and Bases, Colonies, Troops, Expansion Planner.
[/ul]

v1.7.0.19 – January 28th, 2013
    Fixes and Improvements[/b] [ul]
  • Fixed threading-related issues that happen while playing a very big game on a very fast machine.
[/ul]

v1.7.0.17 – December 12th, 2012
  • Fixes and Improvements[/b]
    • Fixed crash described above that was found in German DW ROTS.
    • Fixed problems with saving and loading Empire Policy files on PCs with some non-English regional settings. To test this fix: change the regional settings to a language that uses different decimal format (e.g. French) and test saving altered Empire Policy files from the Empire Policy screen. Check that altered policy files correctly reload the changed values.
    • Some missing Empire Policy settings are now properly saved: Allow sabotage mission: Destroy base, Allow sabotage mission: Assassinate character, Never recruit troops until colony population reaches X threshold.
    • Added comprehensive fallback options for weapons selection in AI ship designs (as per DW Shadows). This will ensure that AI military ships always have weapons, even when preferred weapon type has not yet been researched.

Fixes are appreciated. The technical ones are hopefully somewhat simple to release, and limits the need to mess with savegames (even if this one should be rather safe).

Thanks for the patch. Saved games slide in smoothly. No issues.

I still would like to have a line item opt-in/opt-out for individual techs in the Ship Design screen. Not clear why the program sometimes hides a better weapon or other tech, and shows only the "newest". Turning off the "latest tech only" helps, but now you have twice as much stuff to scroll through.

Looking forward to Shadows.

Thanks for fixing the regional settings policy bug. But I found a thread on it that tipped on editing the policy files manually. I did that and it worked. From the beta log I believe I can delete the policy files and let the game auto generate them correctly again (minimized risk I did some error editing manually).

Hi, I've finished a long very interesting game, but I noticed a few problems during gameplay :

- When there is too much information to display on the info-box (lower-left of the screen), the text overflow and I didn't find a way to see the missing informations. Is there a way to make the info-box taller, or scrollable ?

- There is a bug when a resupply ship is in a fleet. It won't stay deployed : it doesn't follow the planet, and after a few seconds, undeploys automatically. Also, when you right-click on the gas planet with the fleet selected, there is no "Deploy" option. It should if there's at least one resupply ship in the fleet.

- When you capture a special colonisation ship with a technology you don't have, the game knows you can colonize new planets and offers the option. But you can't click on the lower-left colonize button under the info-box : It won't accept the order, even if you have a ship which can do it.

- Sometimes it suggest your buy new ships for X money, but when you click, all the construction boxes are zero. It repeats the suggestion every minute or so, which can get annoying after an hour.

- I have a top-end computer, but the game still gets *really* slow when you have 200+ ships on screen, especially when they are selected. The game doesn't have to display them all when they are packed on the same spot. The same happens on some middle-zoom levels, the game gets really slow sometimes.

- The AI doesn't use troops correctly, and will often attack a planet although it will lose badly, getting all your troop leaders killed in the process.

- When your empire gets huge, you get attack alarms all the time, and it becomes difficult to see them all. I would really like to have blinking red circles everywhere a battle is currently in progress, that way, even if I miss the alarm, I can still have a global view of all conflicts in the galaxy. Optionally, the same would be nice when aliens are fighting together, it's good to know what's going on in the visible galaxy.

- There is no "clear fleet" button in the fleet panel.

- I often had to give fleet orders two or three times to get the AI to do it. Especially "Load troops" after a planet's capture. And when you queue orders, like "repair and refuel" then "move", I very often see the fleet move before being done with the first order, leaving many ships without fuel in the process.

- Ship design automation creates ships bigger than my current technological ability to build them.

- Explorers stops exploring the galaxy when they have explored every-system. But they should continue to cycle on planets where you have no visibility, to seek for ruins to investigate (sometimes they miss them), pirates, or new settlements.

- Why is the fleet automation giving attack targets on the Ancient's gas stations all the time? How can I stop it from doing this?

- This is a suggestion, but... ressources charts and transactions history please (ship X bought/sold Y units of Z for B money)... I really feel blind while playing. I don't know when ressources are transported, where they come from, and it's really hard to know which mines or ports have important ressources, and which don't.

Thank you for the amazing game. There's really not much missing to make it perfect. :)

Had to re-install DW+ROTS+Legends. Found your beta patch and was pleased to see that the policy files were fixed.
Loaded DW, switched to my mod, Theme loaded ok and started a new game. Went to empire policy and loaded my custom races policy file and still had to go through adjusting whether it was manual or automatic on the settings. Am I doing something wrong? I saved a new policy file with the beta patch and it still would not load the settings, like ship design, colony buildings etc.

Thanks though for the patch, it does help with the other settings in the policy file.

Just comments to some points.

Giving a fleet an order gives that order to every ship in the fleet. Which makes it a bad idea to put resupply ships inside the fleets. Run the resupply ships outside fleets, or make them their very own resupply fleet. You will still have to order deployment for the ship, not fleet, though.

The job of the resupply ship is to sit somewhere and mine/provide fuel. The job of a fleet is to run around fighting. They don't share a mission except in odd cases where a resupply ships is attacked or otherwise helps in a battle.
- Sometimes it suggest your buy new ships for X money, but when you click, all the construction boxes are zero. It repeats the suggestion every minute or so, which can get annoying after an hour.
The build order screen is always calculated when you open it. The problem here is that they don't think you should build anything, because your cashflow is negative.

There is, however, a "special order" since a few patches, that makes the AI spend money if there is money on hand. But this is a "yearly calculation" or something, and it is this build suggestion you see pop up. But by the time you open the screen, the info is gone, since you then meet the normal "no building, we lack cashflow" AI.

Annoying? Maybe. Just learn to ignore them, or build by their spirit (Build for 100k).
- The AI doesn't use troops correctly, and will often attack a planet although it will lose badly, getting all your troop leaders killed in the process.
War is dangerous. It could be better in judging troops needed, though.
- I often had to give fleet orders two or three times to get the AI to do it. Especially "Load troops" after a planet's capture. And when you queue orders, like "repair and refuel" then "move", I very often see the fleet move before being done with the first order, leaving many ships without fuel in the process.
I think this happens due to lack of fuel, and due to the fleet trying to leave some troops on the planet. I did not notice much problems with troop loading in my latest game, though. The movement with out of fuel ships is annoying, though, in particular if there is fuel available nearby.
- Why is the fleet automation giving attack targets on the Ancient's gas stations all the time? How can I stop it from doing this?
You probably can't. You can turn off AI suggestions, though. That gas station probably annoy your AI quite a lot, and they want it gone. In general the AI is not fond of other empires having bases on their territory (it makes exceptions for good friends, and give mining rights).

Thank you for the feedback Bingeling.
But by the time you open the screen, the info is gone, since you then meet the normal "no building, we lack cashflow" AI.
I don't think that's what happened, my cashflow was around +2.000.000 and I had hundred of millions of money in stock... Money was *far* from a problem in that game, I had way too much. I was 20x more powerful than all the other races, and eradicated the Shakturi in a few minutes.
I think this happens due to lack of fuel, and due to the fleet trying to leave some troops on the planet.
Lack of fuel, no. My fleet had enough fuel. I'm not sure why I had to insist to get them to load troops. Maybe the planet isn't seen as your property immediatly after being captured... and you have to wait for a few seconds after the capture.
