Quick Newby questions re-settings

Command Ops: Battles From The Bulge takes the highly acclaimed Airborne Assault engine back to the West Front for the crucial engagements during the Ardennes Offensive. Test your command skills in the fiery crucible of Airborne Assault’s “pausable continuous time” uber-realistic game engine. It's up to you to develop the strategy, issue the orders, set the pace, and try to win the laurels of victory in the cold, shadowy Ardennes.
Command Ops: Highway to the Reich brings us to the setting of one of the most epic and controversial battles of World War II: Operation Market-Garden, covering every major engagement along Hell’s Highway, from the surprise capture of Joe’s Bridge by the Irish Guards a week before the offensive to the final battles on “The Island” south of Arnhem.

Quick Newby questions re-settings

Post by altipueri »

Orders delay - affects both sides or just player?
Weather effects - ditto

Re-inforcements:
It seems I could double count by setting -
Axis - favours Axis
Allies - favours Axis

Would setting re-inforcements to none for both sides mean there is then just a fight with initial setup troops?

Supplementary question:
Could saved games be used as a set of new scenario problems rather than people having to make complete new maps? For example: XYZ's St Vith save day 2 - see if you can win from here. Rather than all scenarios always starting from the same point.

Order delay effects both sides..scenarios are awlays tested at realistic. i always play at that setting.

I never ever mess around with tehr einforcements, I like to play it how the designer wanted it to be played.

The save game question..very unlikely..and why would anyone want to carry on playing someone elses scenario with all the possible mistakes etc they have made?

You can use the map to create a new scenario from scratch though.

Save games. Why not? If you would like that?

Reinforcements. Never tried none. Like Wodin, I never tamper with the settings. Always leave them on realistic orders and everything else exactly as it is, so sorry, can't help. Muck around and see what happens?

Welcome. I see others have chimed in already, thanks.

Re Reinforcement Schedules. The historical schedule, if provided, is the one that most closely represents the historical arrivals. However, in many scenarios we aslo provide other schedules to reflect alternate arrival rates and locations. If you are playing as the Axis and choose "Favouir Axis" then you will get one of the schedules that provides either or all of more Axis units or at earlier arrival times or at better locations. If you also choose the Favour Axis for the Allies then the Allies will receive either or all less Allied units at later arrival times or at less favourable locations. You can use these as a way of play balancing the scenario. In a number of scenarios there are a number of schedules of the same type ( eg you may have three standard, three favour us, three favour them schedules. Once you select the schedule type it will randomly chopose one from the available list of the same type. That way you can play the scenario and have a different experience, not knopwing from where or when the arrivals occur.

Pheonix he wants to be able to have a new scenario starting from scratch yet 2 days into a scenario..so your taking that as the start time..I'm not sure it can work..yes you can just issue people with the save game but thats not what he is asking.

You can always provide people with a saved game and they can surely load and play from there but you cannot create a new scenario from a saved game, if that's what you are asking.

Thanks guys. Phoenix was nearer what I intended. Rather like chess problems often take a real match and then say "see what white missed - mate in three" or somesuch.

I realise you can't make a new scenario but you can be a "new commander" sent in to take over because XYZ is incapacitated for whatever reason.

As for the settings I get it and see how jigging the re-inforcements options adds some re-playability.

I like the "issue commands and let them get on with it" approach rather than the micro-managing in other games. Also I got a marginal victory in my first go at St Vith - and there's nothing like an early victory to encourage the troops rather than the relentless defeat defeat, you're crap, RTFM of some others.

Whoops my bad..so yes anyone can play a save game..though the only reason I can see someone wanting too is if they are in some sort of campaign roleplay set up. The trouble is they wouldn't have seen what had happened up until that point..which would make it difficult.

What I'd like is to have leader deaths and wounds..where the leader of the unit can be killed and another takes over with worse though maybe even better stats..also the leader could come back in two days after being wounded etc. Though I also think that leaders should have a big impact on unit performance and I'm not sure they do in game at present. That way a leader death or even wounded and out for two days could be a blow.

Ok, more supplementals having played a couple more times.

(BTW - I did watch all the videos in one sitting until blood was coming from my eyes, ears and nostrils)

When you load a save game, you just start from where the save was. Maybe it would be possible to start as the other side, or change the settings. Some games allow this from saves, or even midgame. One for the next patch or version maybe?

Put it in the feature request thread;)

Unlikely this will be in a patch maybe in a new game as from what I've seen nothing is easy to implement in this game. Again I'm not sure the want for this feature would be enough to implement it but I maybe wrong, so much work is in the pipeline with new games and juts one major feature is a massive task, things like mines where supposed to be in BFTB but never got in for instance. Dismounted Inf and new combat doctrines are supposed to be the big features of the next game Chir River, much needed and wanted improvements.

Now if it is easy to implement and enough ask I'm sure we will get it, Dave will know what is involved coding wise. I want things like more detailed AAR's where you can see what casualties a unit caused etc and more detailed feedback through somekind of message system from your units (things like a urgent request for Arty, or warning a unit needs reinforcements etc before it breaks) again this was talked about extensively before BFTB was released..

Thanks for the suggestions. This would be a new feature. Best to include it under the "Future Directions- Features" thread here: tm.asp?m=2480256&mpage=11&#3238428
