Screenshooting

Post by Antiscamp »

I like making screenshots of my games. The problem with Distant Worlds is that FRAPS doesn't like it at all and refuses to create screenshots of it. I don't know what the problem is with that, because FRAPS even takes screens of the Skyrim Creation Kit, which is also a Windows application.

Right now, to screenshoot DW, I press PrtScrn and paste the image into an image editing program and save. It's a way more complicated procedure than FRAPS provides and makes me take less screenshots of this game than any other.

How do you do screenshots? Any tips?

Here's a screenie of my ongoing game. I am doing very well playing the Ackdarians. Too well, in my opinion. Next time I will turn up the aggressiveness in the galaxy, because my neighbours are way too nice, although I know that the Ackdarians do tend to get along with the others quite naturally.

Hello Antiscamp. Just press the 0 key on your keyboard number pad to capture a screenshot.
the screenshot will be found in the C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Code Force Limited\Distant Worlds\Version #\screenshots directory.
Shields are useless in "The Briar Patch"...

Which is a somewhat silly hotkey, because when I was typing in the framerate limit I took a screenshot instead. On the other hand, I guess I don't have to type 0 that much more in the game. I'm used to the numpad from work.

Fraps doesn't take screenshots of Distant Worlds in Windows 7, because DW is not rendering in an exclusive window like most games do. You can change it so Fraps works with DW by checking the box "Monitor Aero desktop DWM" in the Fraps general tab. Then it works with DW. It can also take screenshots of all your desktop windows, which may not be wanted in the long run.

I pause the game to take screenshots, use Screen Grab Pro, and grab a region.

Modern windows also got a Snipping Tool that can be used, I just got used to Screen Grab Pro before discovering that one.

In Win7, I use the freeware ShareX that allows cropping portions of the screen, then automatic uploading to Photobucket or whatever hosting service you'd like.

The Battle of Apotalpe. The rats have settled a system deep behind my borders, and that's causus belli enough. As the bulk of our fleet is operating on their territory, and the settled colony is taken by land invasion, the rats show up at our border system and head for the planet Apotalpe. Our Home Fleet is dispatched to take care of the invaders and meet them in a fierce fight off the planet, where our technological superiority comes to full effect. Not a single of the enemy ships leave the system, and the rats sue for peace after their sound defeat.

What a beautiful picture, and what a beautiful battle!

Ah. This is also a wonderful screenshot from my ongoing game. It's from the Second War against the Rats, and depicts one of a series of major victories off the planet Thelas 2. The rats invaded the planet, I retook it and then defended against a second invasion as well. They attempted to beat my fleet three times, and were beaten three times by my great admiral Kalan.

What a beautiful game!

I just tried Bandicam on Distant Worlds, and it works perfectly well together with the game. You just have to reassign the screenshot hotkey if you don't want the Fleets menu to pop up every time you take a screenies.

That's it. I'm throwing FRAPS out and will be using Bandicam instead from now on. It's actually way superior to FRAPS in so many ways.

Not really. It is an alternative, but in no way superior in what really counts when recording game footage.

Deleted this post, which was a praise to Bandicam.

A few minutes after I posted, I went into Skyrim and was supposed to take a few screenshots. Bandicam created all-black screenshots. So much for that. Back to using FRAPS.

@Antiscamp: I'm pretty sure Bandicam has many positive features. Fraps is kind of sticking to what its good at, while not adding much new features at all.

Great screenshots. [8D]

Yeah, at least Bandicam makes great videos with ease. I tried recording Distant Worlds and ended up with a really splendid quality video. But FRAPS does certain things even easier and just as satisfying, as you say.
