Dissappearing pilots

Post by CapAndGown »

Well, as with so many other bugs, I don't have a "before" file to complement the "after" file. So sending a save game file would be rather pointless. We really need to automate have the game save the last turn we did in the state it was just BEFORE WE ADVANCED THE TURN so that we can have befores and afters to send to Matrix. Nevertheless, for posterity's sake, I thought I would report the bug here:

I just saw something really weird: I had a squadron that would not gain more than 15 pilots. So I moved it thinking this might wake it up. Well it did. Next turn it had 24 pilots, with all the newbies showing fatigue. So I had it stand down. Then there was no appreciable loss in fatigue, so I decided to set the training level to 10% to "wake them up." Well now the squadron is back down to 15 pilots! Guess they found out they would actually be required to fly once and a while and decided to desert. B@stards.

I've seen this as well. First I thought it was a return of the pilot allocation bug and was going to send in a bug report. Then suddenly I had enough pilots. Then later back to 15 again. This is a Allied P39 squadron with 24 planes. I don't think I've got a before and after but I'll take a look.

Interesting. Is it Fighter Squadron 36? That seems to be the one causing problems.

I've got saves

Post by fcooke »

It is indeed the 36th FS. And it turns out I do have a sequence of three saves. 28 May - 15 pilots, 29 May - 27 pilots, 30 May - 15 pilots again. If Matrix wants these saves I can send them along. It's a PBEM game, don't know if you need anything other than the save game file as password. Looks like my guys were on training all along, so there was no 'activity' to boost up/reduce the number of pilots....

Thanks, the pilot code has some serious oddities in it which may or may not be something we can fix. If Ross can duplicate your experience hopefully he can send it on to me for us to check if we can do anything about it.

Bugs like these sometimes point to deeper systemic problems. Solving them then becomes a path by which other problems can be solved as well. Hence, my desire to see it fixed. (I have debugged enough operating system code to know that small problems can lead to solving major ones.)

I may be able to help here. I don't know if it's the exact same squadron, but I did notice the other day in my PBEM game that I have a P39 or P400 squadron with 24 planes and only about 12 pilots. Since CAP %age seems to be set by the number of PLANES (not pilots), I ended up setting the squadron to only CAP 30% becuase I didn't want them flying themselves to death.

Last I checked this squadron was very short on pilots. I can maybe send you a save tonight. Have to check.

do you want more saves

Post by fcooke »

I've got three as described above. I'm sure Drex will provide his password as this is a PBEM. Ley me know if you need my saves or if they are not necessary.
