"radio intercepts reports the last support personel are heading for the northern coast." replied the orderly. "doubtful any evacuation for them now, under the present conditions, sir."
"Yes, the Japs hit Port Blair yesterday and the bloody bastards may have gotten the best of the fleet to boot." The general opined.
"Whats our situation Major?"
"Thiry-one hundred rifles with a furtherseventy-five hundred support personel,fifty-nine guns, mostly two pounders and morters, and one hundred and seven trucks and carriers, sir." came the crisp reply.
"Major?"
" Sir the moral is at best shaken, most of the boys are strung out from Katha over 75km of trail. They will not withstand a regimental sized assault."
"Sir, we just received word Akyab was hit lst night by battleships of the Imperial navy, most of the aircraft were destroyed or damaged including the Americans. The town is on fire, the airfield wrecked, and the port smashed. I think we are done in Burma sir."
" Good night Major, give orders for all the ground crews to break camp and head north first light. And Major?"
"Sir?"
"Any word about Australia?"
"The lead elements of the 4th Australian Cavalry Brigade has made Terapo Sir." The Major was staring at the dirt floor of the leanto, "There are reports of a large naval engagement, we are hopeful.."

"Over 100km through jungle and swamp, the men are actually in good spirits.....considering."
"Yes, they came through it well and the supplies which reached the beaches these last two days will go along way to restoring the force."
"HQ on the mainland reports two thirds of the relief ships were sunk, sir." replied the XO.
"It's far worse than that though..." a long pause.." Sydney reports the loss of the US carriers Lexington and Saratoga." still looking at the maps on the bamboo table under the leanto. " The Australia and Canberra are gone to along with the US cruiser Chester." The I Corp commander was tired.
"We are going to march back." another pause. "get another strip carved out of the jungle, and get it done now."
"Sir." The XO turned smartly, even with the fever, and retired.

Early May 1942
SwPac: Japs hit Cairns with point blank BB fire and do damage to the facilities. 350 dead or wounded. They do miss small transport unloading at Terapo where the Aussies are in full supply for now. Surface group headed by Prince of Wales declines intercept when Zeros appear over the IJN BBs during some LBA attacks on the task force. Fighter squadrons are staging through Noumea to the mainland for support. The three heavy groups are resting and refitting with aircraft in the Australian interior. Two squadrons of Canadians have also arrived. Suva is almost fully developed and well defended. Hiva Ova is also developed and providing refueling and tanker support for Australia.
India: Marauders are embarked on transports from Cape Town and make for the Indian mainland. "Pappy" is now heading up a P38 squadron, almost filled out with aircraft, and some of our best pilots in Bombay. 10th Airforce HQ and support have arrived and our taking up positions in eastern India to support a small manouver operation scheduled for mid summer.
CenPac: Enterprise and Yorkown will link up with Hornet in June after some more training and aircraft upgrades. Pearl has three quarters of million pts of supply and fuel and continues to build up for fall Ops. We scrounge everyday for long range transports. Sub warfare has been completely ineffective as well as ASW. IJN subs have scored well.

Stockpiles of defensive mines, saved up til now, are being deployed along the Akyab coast, IJN BBs have already paid respects to the garrisons.

Noumea is now operational with a base force and being reinforced. Fighter squadrons stage through Suva through Noumea for the mainland. A slow battleship division is now in SoPac to be joined by another in June. More air groups make their way into theater. B17s groups stage back to the northern coast and launch a high altitude raid on Port Morseby, we wait for the results. Zeros CAP all of New Guinea. Terapo still loses transports but enough get through to keep I Corp supplied. Fuel shortages in SoPac, SwPac, and Australia are close to accute.

We anticipate the arrival of the B26s in the next ten days on the Indian mainland. Akyab is the scene of fighter combat about once a week. The Oscars appear in droves than vanish for days. Aerial recon assets are few and a P38 recon squadron shipped out for Africa to arrive at the end of June to help spot the Jap fields.

SwPac: Raid over Port Morseby at 24,ooo' comes in with small parcels of 6-12 planes. Little damage apparent, 3 hits for some losses to our big boys. P39s stage into Terapo but the Japs spot it and fail to raid. The pilots are tired and may retire tomorrow to try again in a few days. Darwin sees the arrival of a RCAF squadron which is beat up in its first escort misson.
Burma: IJA makes for the mountains on the road to China. They make contact with a small divison and 11th Army Group HQ. IJA forces appear to be massing between the Pearle and Yangtze.

Zulu HQ: Losing Port Morseby un nerved HQ a tad. We just wasted May trying to reduce it scoring (1) hit. Be that as it may, we sent in a low level raid at 9,ooo' today with some results. There are no other prime targets reachable by the "forts" at this time, so it is as much for experience. Twenty-seven fortresses find the port and finaly lay a little wood. They are met again by KI-45s and A6M2s. The Japs fighters damage thirteen but flak gets one down. 47 base hits, drinks at the O club tonight. The bad news comes at the debreif where a new spot shows a 26,ooo man garrison. A6M2s wreak havoc on the P39s at Terapo and are withdrawn to the mainland. It is time for a massive strategy re-think. Kira Kira and Nendni are still free, but I doubt for long. IJ forces occupy almost every dot north of Darwin. The central Pacific may be the main event.
CBI: The IJAF reappears over Akyab and we are ready. Oscar Ics at 37,ooo. A little parity now as 3 US and 1 Brit are downed to 5 meatballs. The more impending battles are in the northeast by Bhamo and the passes to China. Wellingtons finaly kill some ground troops, only a pin prick but good for moral.

Losses to the forts have been far higher than in the classic WITP-AE version. We anticipate Wasps arrival shortly to give us four operational fleet carriers. Hornet is at sea on overwatch of a slow battleship division on a raid. If detected over 320nm out we will retire post haste.
Overall: It's all logistics for now. Planning, training, and assembly. The loss of two carriers to none (one CVL damaged and BB damaged) forces me to reign in Major Fauxpas and Sgt Kneejerk and listen to reason. In this case Erwin Rommel, "Don't fight a battle if you don't gain anything from winning." (1937).

SoPac: Kida Butai 240nm NNW of Suva. Half the CAP never engages on the combat screen. The raiders are on naval attack and get at some large empty APs, a mine sweeper, and a destroyer. I spot so many carriers I have to trust it's the combined mobile force and will mobilize the Brittish navy in the Indian Ocean. It may be possible to retake Port Blair.
Australia: All B17 groups are at full strength. Construction nears completion at Townsville and is being accelerated at Cairnes. Prince of Wales is at sea but needs refueling but will open the party.
US: Wasp is nine days from the west coast. Many xAKs are getting upgrades; the subs and destroyers are almost finished.
Middle East: The Australian division, held in reserve at Aden, is released to South East Asia and prepares to board transports.

GEEEEEZ, Terry just sunk two big tankers and holed POW, all with in 80nm of heavily defended (ASW) ports. I'm in that "black" time of the war. Nothing goes according to plan and I am constantly ambushed. I am building up however and Japan will taste the terrible swift sword. BB Fanboy, POW was within 2 squadrons of ASW, two squadrons of search aircraft, and two ASW TF's. I believe your spot on.

Late June: It appears Marcus and Wake are abandoned as Battleship Division 1 and Hornet return from raiding. I don't know if it's worth an operation so deep in the pacific to reclaim them. The 1st Marine Division should depart the west coast on the morrow. Terapo: out of supply and not enough transports to really help.

Thanks for the link. I appreciate it. Presently, first week of July '42, Final touches on the broad plan to take Japan down are being realized with OOB's and positioning. I hope to post at least one "front" with maps etc. over the weekend. Right now I'm dealing with the IJN off Townsville-Cairnes in a shell game and it requires the utmost guess work. It will not be long before I will not have to "guess" his intentions as air cover and ground formations are in place. It's the US Navy taking new air craft and final AA upgrades. As I phased this, there are available naval air assets to intervene should the IJN error in there judgement.
