floatation damage

Post by MuguNiner »

Greetings,

After fighting an historically notable battle against the AI IJN I have a BB with 70 floatation damage 1 hex off of Midway Is. I believe that it will only move 1 hex per turn and thus a journey to PH will be very unlikely to succeed. I guess I am interested in hearing suggestions on how to get it repaired while anchored at MI. Suggestions please.

With only 16 Sys damage, you should be able to put in in cruise speed and send it to PH with no problem.

Or anchor it at Midway and use it as a floating battery, much like HMS Canopus did at the Falklands in1914!

BB Colorado is too big to disband at Midway, cruise for PH. mebbe add a bit more ASW to her TF.

it will disband and even do pierside repair mode but Midway could not fix most of the damage without a bunch of service ships. and lots of time. i also think there is no naval support there.

add ASW escorts and cruise to Pearl indeed.

there is a technical term for those who confuse the opinions of an author's characters for the opinions of the author.
the term is IDIOT.

You can disband ships even when there's no port.

Well I sent her to PH and she is traveling at 2 hexes per turn and after two turns the flotation damage is down to 66 and systems down to 14! Good crew!

Thanks

Almost always a ship will disband at Midway. Except when it has a mind of its own, knows there's no naval support, and keeps going for Pearl. How do I know this? Don't ask for a few more turns. [:)]

I assume that when folks say there is no naval support at Midway, they mean at the beginning of the game, as you might have put LOTS of naval support since then... only you know the answer to that!

I actually have Santa Claus living at Midway in my game. Don't tell Mike, or he'll invade it for the candy and reindeer games. [8D]

Well, my original thought was to disband the BB at MI to prevent sinking due to the high level of floatation damage. I don't have facilities there that would repair the damage, just some PT, float plane, and mine tenders. It is on its way to PH and the crew has reduced floatation damage to 61. They have an additional boiler online and are making turns for three hexs a day! The Capt will reward the crew at 20:00 hours with a showing of "Casablanca" on the mess deck!

The ploy of disbanding at Midway would be to fix some or all system damage before proceeding to a shipyard where the major floatation can be addressed. Think of system damage vis a vis flaotation damage as broken pumps. Very often large combatants can fix a lot of minor floatation and some system damage while underway. I've seen twenty points of minor floatation be fixed on a BB while on a long transit to the yards. But system damage is very important if float damage is high. That would be the only real benefit of Midway, unless a mid- or late-war ARD were there which could take a BB in. The trade off is the BB is vulnerable to air attack while disbanded in a forward area.

If the floatation has gone down you are ok to continue to PH,if it increases then you would have to decide if you wanted to disband at MI and then get a AR up to MI to help get the system damage down enough to make for PH.
In 1943 and later Midway was setup as a forward sub base with tenders and such to allow subs to spend more time in Japanese waters.

Disband at Midway, get Sys damage to 0 and remove minor flood damage. The the battle play itself out, then when the shooting is done and the Sys and Minor Flood damage is all gone....THEN sail to PH with escort. Most ARs are capable of fleet cruise speed, so dispatch one from PH immediately to help get the superficial damage repaired before the voyage. Then travel the AR with her en route home. If you loses any flood control or damage control rolls, duck into a base/dot hex, disband and repair it down again before continuing. I almost go the USS Alabama home to PH from west of the Gilberts from 98 flood damage doing this. She just didnt make the hop from Christmas onward to Penrhyn.

What you did not tell us is how much of the damage is major flotation damage. Any flotation that is not can be repaired at Midway. If you have 70 major flotation damage then I would park the ship at Midway until the sys damage is to zero. Then you can move her safely. If like you said you can repair the flotation damage down to 50 or 60 then I would feel pretty safe moving her even with some sys damage. ARs and naval support will help shorten the time to repair non major and sys damage but will not repair major damage.

However, I should say that if you felt that the BB was in danger of getting caught by the Japanese at Midway, you would be fairly safe moving her with all of her sys and flotation damage under cruise speed to Pearl right away. Fairly safe but not guaranteed....She might sink 10 to 20% of the time depending. The thing is with that much damage, the real repair time delay is going to be repairing major damage. with 50 to 60 flotation that may take about six months for a BB. You won't repair any of this until you get her to a yard.

Here it is. Crew has floatation damage down to 58 and it looks like 56 is the best the will get to. R&R in PH and then off to the W Coast.
