What about our Real life?

SPWaW is a tactical squad-level World War II game on single platoon or up to an entire battalion through Europe and the Pacific (1939 to 1945).

What about our Real life?

Post by skukko »

Just came in my mind: How are/is your real life doing after you've found Steel Panthers World at War ?

At august 2000 I was kinda situation where I didn't want to continue my career as a steel worker, ironman, teräsmies (as it is said in Finland). I was close to burnout-phenomenom after 10 years work at steel and machinery industry.(and in publishing 6years at print house as a AD.) I did lots of bucks(close to 45000 dollars)per year and six days at week, 16 to 18 hours a day. I was not the father I was thinking I wanted to be to my 10, 8, and 6 years old doughters. And you should guess: Not good enough for my love, my wife. After few weeks of thinking and listening my inner thoughts I decided to quit all that 'working hero' bullshit stuff. -Family comes first, despite of loss of money. Remember that.

I ain't got banks at my back. Loans are paid. I live in old 'villa', -too big house to repair at once,-but it's paid as is my -99model car, ( and as is; -65Impala SS with 331cid,370hp de-stroker, chopped, flamed killer)...and dogs and birds ... Image

Nowdays I work when it is needed, -we really don't need all great stuff that is sold cheaper than ever. Still I have monthly pay close to what it was. I help my friends in plumming, welding and fishing, and get my neck wet at 18 hours work on some intranet, -which often is closed because wires were not connected...

(I should warn you, - don't do this unless you've tried it atleast twice and unsucceeded. This ain't easy way out... )

I've been kinda loner and I've done things that we should not speak of, while there is so many reading this. I also have ended and stopped doing many bad habits. But I never have had feeling to end the game, - such as is SPWaW.

Thank you: Wild Bill,mr Heath,Marauder Mel, Redleg, Saffron, Amos, Cloutier, Fprado,Grasse, Boutwell, Joe O, Al's(both) Nielsen, Jacques,Tankhead, Arralen, Don Doom, Drex, and all the Matrix Games Forum folks and creators for being in right place at right time.

and I bought Baldurs Gate 2 for my love, - and ever since I've had understanding of >suck:Human immobilised< Image

sincerely to all here

Mosh SpWAW is probably just a good computer game to most people, but this last year I was fighting cancer, unable to work, eat, or even talk. I might have given up except for this addictive game which kept me occupied, kept my mind off the pain and kept me from feeling sorry for myself. Well, I beat the rap and SPWAW has become very special to me. Granted I still cna't play worth a damn, but i thank my lucky stars that SPWAW was there when I needed it. So I will be a faithful follower and supporter and hopefully a better player.

I'm with ya'll on this. I've been in Texas law enforcement for 13 years. Currently I'm a patrol sergeant, and a tactical team member. But in the past few weeks I've started battling a colon disease which is making it increasingly hard to work (no one wants to answer calls with a sarge who can't stand upright). I found this game earlier this week and have become totally engrossed. It may help me get through the tough months ahead. Plus, this is a great forum. Lot of good people come here, with all kinds of useful information.

And here I thought I was the only one who was overcoming loneliness with WAW. I"m retired, divorced a little over a year ago. Gamer over the last 40+ years. Until I was able to get the CD of version 4 - plus upgrades from the Matrix site - I was just sort of moping around, doing some railroad sims and not much involved.

All that has changed, I'm up to my ears in this great game and loving it. This is by far the best forum since the early days of PacWar List, in some ways even better because the suport is so much wider and deeper than anything we had back then.

Don't get me wrong, we had truly talented people involved with PW, some of them professionals in the field of military history, staff professors at military schools, military historians. But I've never seen the support in so many <different> areas as I see here.

And the people are just as warm and responsive too, truly a fine bunch. If it weren't for my involvement with WAW I might be climbing the walls. Instead, I'm busy as many hours of the day as I care to be. Since all it does in this $%^& place is snow, there is a lot of time to displace.

Thanks to everyone who has been so nice, to those who put so much into making SPWAW the great gaming system it is. Without you, it would be a lonely life.

Best from here,

Byron Inglesh

PhD in Geological Sciences.....work as a consultant. Needless to say, my professional life takes up a considerable amount of time. I am also somewhat of a Eastern Front historian buff. So, when i am not involved with my career, i am usually studying the history books and, of course, involved with SPWaW.

I also want to express my appreciation for this forum and all involved with it. As i said in an earlier post regarding "What Makes SPWaW........SPWaW? Well, aside from the great game, it is all the lads involved with it.

Thanks!!!!

First: Drex, - get your turn Image

I had cancer in my colon when I was young, (too young to die) 9th to 16 year... It kinda made me as I am now. I'll thank deeply every day I am here. Drex, Jonhooper: Don't ever give up, ever. Don't know about higher forces, but wargames have kept me alive, (include chess in it). Doc's said clearly that I'll be lucky to get 55, - so far no problems Image I'm 36.

Warhorse: It's 'Gun metal' coloured, black inside, bolts painted on skirts, flames matte pink and no chrome, -remember WW2 Fighters? Leadslead, by all its means :P Fuel? For crying out loud...

Bing: Yup. We are here. Does it prove something of our social capabilities? (Joke)

Great thread! I guess everyone thinks that they are the only one - I had a liver transplant in 93, but no problems there. Then disabling arthritis in my feet put me on disability since January 2000, and I was getting mighty bored until I found this game in June.

Emailed Wild Bill a couple of times, got into scenario design and the next thing I know I'm working on several games and so busy I have time for nothing else - and don't want time for anything else! Image

Me and my son folow this game from SP1 till now. Im a retired SgtMjr USMC. Several major injuries from long ago 1 eye bad hands etc. Retired as a Instructor do to bill CLintons policies. My son also lives with me and We both play this game and read the threads. He is a Information Systems Technician. He got his degree after 10 Years in The USMC. And is recoverying from a very bad car wreck Which crushed his hip. SO we play alot.
So krull is actualy 2 people. HAHAH Cause im not very good with computers and he has trouble getting around right now.
Spwaw so far has helped our boredom alot. Because many other games we tried are kinda arcadie to me and i cant keep up with action but SPwaw lets me think and compensates for hands and eye. Image And he just liek all the details and doesnt like generic games where all the Equipment is basicly the same.

Often we become so immersed in our own problems (and rightfully so!) that it is a good wake up call for everyone (including me) to be reminded of a fact I have long known to be true.

Each person out there, even in our small gaming community is a world to himself. He finds himself confronted with all sorts of problems (personal, physical, occupational, and those of family, plus others)that he is forced to overcome and get through.

I have encountered some of that recently myself, including increased vision problems, cataract removal in both eyes with the insertion of articifical lenses, tumors in the colon (benign, thank God!) and a few other little setbacks.

Gaming is a source of comfort, of positive distraction of the mind, as well as an exercise of our thinking processes and emotions (a lot of whooping, hollering and moaning go on around here at all hours...and not just in the bed Image ).

And the friendships established across the world is an opportunity unique to our generation. All in all it has been a wild, fun ride so far!

Wild Bill

Guys,
Ya inspire me and make my own personal problems seem small in comparison. I am a former USMC Sgt. I got out in 1985 and Have worked for the US Government since then as an aircraft engine repairer at Naval Air Depot Alameda, CA. and when it close, transfered to Naval Air Depot Jacksonville, Fl.
I went into a depression this last November after a bad bought with pnuemonia and burnt out in another PBEM club, American Civil War Game Club after a year and a half. I found SPWAW while looking for the first version of the game at Steel-Lighting this month. Download and it pecked my interest. I well most likely return to my old club but not with the ferver when I started, just enought to keep my hand in it.
The Matrix site and what has been done to SP has greatly impressed me.

I write software for a living. I've written all kinds, from operating system modules that talk directly to hardware, all the way up to big distributed business applications. The one thing I never got to work on was a game.

That's probably the biggest jazz of SP:WAW for me -- working on a campaign for the game (however slowly) is probably the closest I'll ever come to doing game programming, so it kind of fills a hole for me.

Not that playing it isn't gobs of fun, too.
