US BCVs?

I have seen several websites that mentioned the US had atleast talked about BCVs. Is this true? Some of them even mentioned them before WW2 started. I know the ones the Japanese converted to were a flop. But what were the ones the US thought about? Some one educate me.[:D]

Are you talking about battleship conversions? The only one I know of was converting the Iowa class. While under construction there was pressure to complete the Iowas as something similar to an Essex class carrier. Ernest King vetoed the idea.

Later in 1960s there were some other ideas kicked around to convert the Iowas to hybrid carriers. I believe one idea was to rebuild them as helicopter carriers and I believe I saw an old model of a VTOL ramped version. It had a skateboard ramp like the RN carriers vintage Falklands War.

There was a proposal from the RN to build massive carriers out of a mix of wood pulp and ice called pykrete. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Habakkuk

There is a story the program died soon after a Roosevelt/Churchill conference where Lord Mountbatton demonstrated the strength of pykrete by shooting a block of it with his service revolver and the round ricocheted almost hitting Ernest King in the leg. Bad idea to go around shooting your allies admirals.

Look it up under Pykrete or HMS Habbakuk.

Even mythbusters had a go and proved its possibility.

Things like the bat bomb or pigeon guided bomb were possible, The Russians had a Dog Anti Tank Mine.

Perhaps you meant CVB vice BCV. My father was a naval aviator in WW2. He had a book called "Introduction to Naval Aviation" which was published just after WW2 which referred to the Midway Class carriers as CVBs.

I think BCV refers to a hybrid carrier/battleship with a rear carrier deck and battleship guns forward. They were thought about but a pretty stupid idea in my opinion.

Actually I think they were more hybrid CV/BC than CV/BB.

Have you ever played StarFleet Command?

It's a game based on SFB that came out about 12 years ago. SFC1, SFC2, SFC2:OP. Avoid SFC3.

Yes I did, was a decent game, the first two being my favorite. It did have multiplayer for battles, the campaign was another story.
