The IJN is clearing a little mine field we placed at Torokina just in case Kongo tried to limp through there. That TF is hanging around just east of Gove, so apparently the mission is to stop traffic to Gove. Five days is the estimate and all but one of the cruisers refitting at Pearl. A couple of claimed sub sinkings were rescinded this day. I knew it!

Operation Wedge in Burma is nearing a milestone. As soon as two days from now the tip of the wedge will advance another hex, surely making the intent of the operation clear. Incidentally either the same day or the following day, the regiment covering the east flank of the main advance will make another hex and thereby cut off the IJA picket regiment that patrolled into the main advance.

The invasion fleet is about 21 hexes out from Nauru, call it 5 days. No sign that either they or the Battle Fleet have been spotted.

Kusaie appears to be ungarrisoned. Tomorrow the Nauru invasion force will be not quite level (N-S) with Arorae. The Battle Fleet will move tonight to take up station in front. I presume that naval search will find the fleet tomorrow.

The fleet has not been spotted so far as I can tell. Three or maybe two days steaming to Nauru for the transports, so D-Day is three days from now (today is D-3). The Ocean Island invasion force will now leave Tabiteuea and land on the same day.

A small CA surface force is heading for Luganville to take over for the Commonwealth forces that have been protecting Ndeni since the Dutch had to withdraw for repairs. Those forces, plus the now-repaired Dutch, will head north along Australia's east coast to begin operations against Horn Island and across the Gulf of Carpentaria. Those forces leaving Ndeni were deliberately sent straight west where they seemed sure to be found by Imperial naval search. That was done to present a busier picture in case only some of the Nauru operation was spotted. As it happens no one was spotted.

An ASW TF west of Bombay has been sighted by aircraft. So it seems another Glen-equipped sub has entered the hunting ground! The waters near and west of Bombay are patrolled by 8 separate ASW groups and by aircraft.

In Burma, tomorrow that IJA regiment SW of Kalemyo will be cut off. The British 2nd division will arrive in hex with that regiment either tomorrow or the next day and will then commence attacking to reduce it. Heavy air support will be used to assist in destroying the regiment. As it has been moving for many days, it is uncertain how many attacks can be made before it leaves the hex.

BB Yamashiro is now reported as sunk on Jan 31st. We had a whole sky-full of 4EB ordered to hit Munda but weather prevented all of them. Rain predicted at target tomorrow too. It seems totally unlikely, but the invasion forces for Nauru and Ocean Island are still undetected by the Empire as far as I know. Both forces will go directly to their target hexes tomorrow ready to land troops the day after (D-Day unchanged). Namorik scouts as empty.

Our 22nd East African Brigade has succeeded in cutting off the IJA 56th Infantry Regiment in Burma. This led to DAW HQ issuing a communique expressing undying affection for the Burma theater - NOT! The 2nd British Division will arrive in hex with the 56th Infantry Regiment tomorrow, and commence attacking the day after. Hopefully the 56th will still be there. Here is the current map of Burma - the place everybody hated so much during WWII that they changed its name!

Near Patung in China DAW HQ came up with a new strategy for defeating a formation of units that was defending to die in place. Adjacent IJA units moved to allow a path of retreat (and begin maneuvering around the next two LOD). Two of the four IJA units at Neikiang have moved NE to keep from all becoming trapped by Chinese Army movements. There is one Imperial unit in Chungking, one NE of Chungking, and one NE of that. Others are seen on their way to the plain. Elsewhere in China the Empire continues to fall for our plan of reducing Chinese Army supply requirements.

The 2nd British Division has arrived on station and will begin attacking the cut-off IJA regiment.

It seems strange, but none of the fleet have been spotted, save those TF actually in-hex at Nauru and Ocean Island. D-Day is tomorrow at both targets. The weather again scrubbed all missions aimed at Munda. Perhaps tomorrow?

The 3 fleet CV refitting at Pearl Harbor will not all be ready as predicted. They are now estimated available in 2, 3, and 4 days. Meanwhile Saratoga has passed the Hawaiian Islands and is 3 days out from refueling at Christmas Island. Where, BTW, no IJN subs have been spotted in quite a while. It is still a major fuel hub for the Allies.

The defense on Nauru was squashed, but Ocean Island turned out to be very much defended! Our force landed there was too small and too little prepared. The troops at Ocean Island must rest, even though more of the 2nd/102nd remain to unload. So, unloading will cease for at least a day but probably two days. Two cruiser forces will bombard Ocean Island tonight/tomorrow and when the troops are ready to attack, the old battleships of Short's Long Guns will move in. A B-26 squadron has moved to Abemama and will begin striking. A USMC Para Bn on Tabiteuea has changed prep to Ocean (33%) and will stand by for amphibious pickup. AK Formalhaut is badly damaged and has disbanded in Nauru's anchorage.

Still, oddly to my mind, the fleet elements that are not in-hex at Nauru or Ocean Island make no reports of being spotted.

There is a 7-ship task force at Woodlark Island, consisting of at least 1 x CL. Presumption is they are aimed at our troop carriers (empty) recently spied moving up the east coast of Australia in preparation for operations against Horn Island. They are presently at Cooktown with warships in 2 x SCTF. Submarines are ordered to mine Woodlark.

Here is a look at Burma. As you can see, it is now clear that DAW HQ has recognized the danger posed to the Imperial units 92mi SE of Cox's Bazar (aka 92mi NE Akyab) and those units are now moving. The 4EB will shift their attacks to those targets, while the 2EB continue assisting 2nd British Division. The idea is for the 4EB to delay the Imperials long enough for the first of the Indian divisions, the 17th, to get in front of them and cut off their escape. An armored unit is already moving to make the river crossing (from 46mi NE Akyab to 46mi E Akyab) and has accumulated 12 miles. The three infantry divisions in-hex with it (USA Americal, USA 27th ID, 14th Indian Div) will set off soon, their speed through the jungle being greater. Notice that E of Kalemyo one or two Imperial units are moving to cut the road above Kalemyo. Measures are being taken.

Sadly the IJA 56th Rgt escaped from under the guns of 2nd British Div. The 22nd East African Bde now bars their way and will continue fortifying in place to hold them, forcing another unit to waste time effecting their release. Meanwhile the 2nd will continue with its primary mission after the two-day diversion.

That mission is to trap the IJA 21st/B Division, 16th Infantry Regiment, and 40th Inf Group Brigade, which are the three units in the target hex discussed in earlier posts. They were all three hit by 4EB to day and the treatment will continue while the Indian and British units move to block them.

Hornet is ready, but she will wait for company. Two days for Yorktown and three days for Lexington. Many converted APA will soon be ready as well, both at Pearl Harbor and at Brisbane.

Both cruiser forces bombarded Ocean Island, but the defending 46th Naval Guard Unit went back into stealth mode and only the port and production facilities felt pain. The combat engineers and the raiders have recovered and will assault the base tomorrow after the battleship bombardment. The army battalion has only 1 functioning squad and high disablement. As a side note, only infantry squads from that unit made it ashore. This might be a good illustration of the consequences of lacking support squads.

I continue to consider it. The units around the word 'Kweiyang' on the map above are moving westward to hold that road. Both toward Chungking and toward Burma. I suppose my very, very, very last line of defense in China is to hold the route toward Burma for two reasons. The smaller reason is to allow relief from the Allies. I doubt that will matter much. The greater reason is to prevent easy flooding of Burma with Imperial units from China.

Things in Burma are moving along and it's a real race to see if I can bust open the Burma plain before the remainder of China is overwhelmed. In addition to the British and Indians, in Burma I also have the two American Divisions, three Australian divisions, one armored units from each country, and several smaller Australian units. If I can kill in place a few Imperial units or at least shatter them that should put great pressure on Walter to start pulling units from China. I haven't checked, but for all I know that's where the units I've recently seen (SigInt) headed to Burma are coming from.

Have you considered withdrawing towards Burma with the Chinese or will you die in place? By the looks of it withdrawing west will not be possible for very long?

I continue to consider it. The units around the word 'Kweiyang' on the map above are moving westward to hold that road. Both toward Chungking and toward Burma. I suppose my very, very, very last line of defense in China is to hold the route toward Burma for two reasons. The smaller reason is to allow relief from the Allies. I doubt that will matter much. The greater reason is to prevent easy flooding of Burma with Imperial units from China.

Things in Burma are moving along and it's a real race to see if I can bust open the Burma plain before the remainder of China is overwhelmed. In addition to the British and Indians, in Burma I also have the two American Divisions, three Australian divisions, one armored units from each country, and several smaller Australian units. If I can kill in place a few Imperial units or at least shatter them that should put great pressure on Walter to start pulling units from China. I haven't checked, but for all I know that's where the units I've recently seen (SigInt) headed to Burma are coming from.

As you know I lost China pretty early in my first PBEM and will loose it in my second too. It makes things a lot harder as it frees up a crazy amount of Chinese troops. But I think the biggest thing is that the Jap player no longer has to worry about being cut off in Burma in later game.

I would certainly try and connect with China from Burma as soon as possible! Even the smallest trickle of supply will certainly make a difference! [:)]

Jock, the boys are going as fast as they can in Burma, and as slow as they dare in China! We've got a 2x2 PBM going that is in August '43 where we have recaptured Burma down to Moulmein. The supplies that have been flowing into China are growing that army explosively! Some days more than a regiment's worth of replacement squads are taken in by the units. Walter is my opponent in Burma in that one too, so he is already on to whatever meager tricks I have. Hopefully Operation Wedge was unexpected enough to put him off balance. It won't be long before we know.

BTW, he's got some RL stuff this weekend so likely no turn until tomorrow.

Witps, how do you maintain such a pace of operations?? Are you invading with less than 100 prep, or just prepping many locations early??

Mostly prepping locations early. Ocean Island was opportunistic and not 100% prep, but nearly everything else is (for all or almost all units). You've got to be prepping far ahead or you will be faced with a choice of either low-prep operations or running out of time. Use Tracker to help audit what units are prepping for what targets.

In the big land campaigns (think Burma at the moment) what I am doing is the same thing, but that means in any given battle only some units are prepped for that target. Other units in the battle are prepping for later targets. I figure that way I am getting some benefit while still being able to move on. Otherwise after a battle there would be a delay while everybody prepped for the next target, and that would be too slow.

A sub attack on the invasion forces off Ocean Island was repulsed. There are 2 IJN ships seen 9 hexes NE of Nauru and our Battle Fleet (presently 1 hex NW Nauru) is still unspotted. Could this be an impending surface raid on what is thought to be an unprotected anchorage? The carriers will move south of Nauru while the fast battleships will take up patrol in the path of the raiders.

Only Lexington remains to make ready at Pearl Harbor, and she is scheduled back in service tomorrow. Many APA were declared ready at Pearl today and many more are expected ready in two days at Brisbane.
