II AUSTRALIAN CORPS RESUMES THE OFFENSIVE

Post by racndoc »

BBfanboy....the CVLs resized their torpedo squadrons on the 11/1-11/2/43 turn and then they resized their fighter squadrons on the 11/3-11/4/43 turn so all is good.

This time the Georges get jacked as Japan loses an astounding 33 Georges. The Allies lost another 15 Hurricane IIcs and 7 F4U-1s but at least the Georges were finally bloodied.

The Allied fighters over southern Burma covered another supply convoy arriving at Rangoon but Im almost considering evacuating Allied air groups from southern Burma for the time being and ceding the skies to Japan. Ive completely exhausted my RAF fighter pilot pools during the aerial combat over the CBI the last month and Ive lost over a score of RAF aces in their obsolete Hurricanes. The RAF is getting the Thunderbolt II in early 1944 and I want to make sure that some experienced RAF pilots are still alive by that time. The VMY pilots have also exhausted their fighter pools and Ive lost over a dozen Marine aces in Burma over the last month.....even though they are flying their cutting edge F4U-1s.

My thinking here is that Ive got enough supply to last in Burma and China for awhile and my future reinforcements to Burma and China can march overland from India. The monsoon season also has ended so maybe I can draw supplies into Burma again across the border and I dont need to sacrifice ther Allied air forces to CAP and LRCAP shipping in the Andaman Sea.

Also by April 1944 I will be receiving brand new P-47D25 in large numbers so the USAAF should be able to shoulder more of the air superiority responsibility in this theatre.

In China.....large Chinese armies continue their advances towards Loyang and Sinyang as the main Japanese army in northern China bogs down outside of Ichang. Tenth Air Force heavy bombers operating out of Chungking are interdicting the movement of the Japanese army outside of Ichang by carpet bombing the clear terrain hex to the east.

PACIFIC COMMANDS

The USN CVLs finally enlarge their fighter squadrons from 12 AC to 24 AC so now the USN fast carriers can put up over 500 Hellcats on CAP. The CVEs continue to repair and upgrade as do the 3 Yorktown class CVs. We are undergoing a complete reorganization of VF fighter squadrons for the CVs, CVLs, CVEs and even the 15 or so VP squadrons that are traing future fighter pilots in Kingfishers. There are 70 exp/70 fighter skill fighter groups on the non Essex CVs and some CVLs that are on "general training" to increase their defensive skills, 60 exp/70 fighter skill fighter groups on some Essex class CVs and some CVLs that are on "strafing" training to increase their exp and some 60 exp/60 fighter skill fighter groups on "sweep training" to increase both their exp and fighter skill. This reorganization includes some 50 exp/70 fighter skill fighter squadrons on VP Kingfisher squadrons that are on "strafe" training to increase their exp. All the fighter squadrons will be able to train for another month before they go back into action as the 3 Yorktown class Cvs complete their upgrades.

CENTPAC will complete loading of the 1st and 2nd Marine Regiments at Makin this turn and will be able to invade at Kwajalein in 2 turns. Ponape AF is now 100% damaged and all the tac and medium bombers in the Marshalls and the Gilberts are now ground bombing the hapless Japanese defenders on Kwajalein.

D-DAY MINUS TWO AT KWAJALEIN

Post by racndoc »

11/5-11/6/43

CBI

Dave withdraws his battered George squadrons to central China where he sweeps the 2nd string USAAF fighters over Changsha.... well at least the RAF pilots in Burma are allowed to rest and train up a bit as the USAAF faces the Georges... and the USAAF fighter pools are large enough to handle the attrition...at least for the moment.

I withdrew 2 RAF Hurricane IIc squadrons from Burma to Calcutta..... downgraded them to Buffaloes... and put them on sweep training. Its not so much that I needed the Hurricane IIc air frames.....although I went from a pool of over 130 Hurricane IIcs to less thatn 20 AC in less than a month....but I needed to cannibalize the experienced pilots from the 2 withdrawn squadrons to rebuild all the decimated front line fighter groups.

Allied medium and heavy bombers based in India hit the Japanese AF at Tavoy....Dave had staged some Vals there to interdict the supply convoys coming into Rangoon and several Vals were destroyed on the ground.

Quiet on the ground in China.

II AUSTRALIAN CORPS

Allied bombers based at Bathurst Is. and Darwin hammer the Japanese AFs at Dili and Lautem and put them out of business....and several Oscars and Helens are destroyed on the ground in the process.

CENTPAC

The 1st and 2nd Marine Regiments will storm ashore on Kwajalein in 2 days ....after several more aerial and naval bombardments are landed. The invasion will be covered solely by land based aircraft stationed in the Marshalls.

The CVLs in port at Luganville complete their fighter squadron upgrades from 12 AC to 24 AC.

Do you have a timetable for taking Ponape or will you bypass it?
I like the island for its proximity to Truk. I can't recall if you have already shut down Truk or no?

D DAY ON KWAJALEIN

Post by racndoc »

BBfanboy....my timetable had me taking Ponanpe in early summer 1943. However....after prepping 2 divisions for 3 months and then reconning Ponape I discovered that Japan had over 40,000 troops there. I would need to commit 5-6 divisions to take out a 40,000 troop garrison and I just dont have the ground forces available to be tied up for an objective like Ponape. Ponape will be bypassed(its AF and port are already 100% damaged) as will Truk and Marcus.

11/7-11/8/43

CBI

Dave sweeps and bombs out Pegu destroying 30 Vengeance DBs on the ground....but his attacking Oscars and Helens are shot up in return. If Im going to losse AC on the ground Im gald its the Vengeance DBs as I still have over 100 of them in the plane pools.

Dave had put up a roadblock to halt supply movement to my frontline SEAC troops outside of Chiang mai. This turn we finally remove the pesky IJA roadblock:

Ground combat at 60,54 (near Chiang Mai)

Allied Shock attack

Attacking force 3272 troops, 46 guns, 46 vehicles, Assault Value = 138

Defending force 679 troops, 1 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 28

Allied adjusted assault: 226

Japanese adjusted defense: 19

Allied assault odds: 11 to 1

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), leaders(-), fatigue(-)
Attacker: shock(+)

Japanese ground losses:
242 casualties reported
Squads: 5 destroyed, 6 disabled
Non Combat: 4 destroyed, 3 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Units retreated 1

Allied ground losses:
67 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 8 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 4 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled

Defeated Japanese Units Retreating!

Assaulting units:
26th Indian/A Division

Defending units:
79th Garrison Battalion

In China.....Dave finally takes Ichang:

Ground combat at Ichang (83,48)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 41023 troops, 511 guns, 236 vehicles, Assault Value = 3087

Defending force 80 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1

Japanese adjusted assault: 1103

Allied adjusted defense: 1

Japanese assault odds: 1103 to 1 (fort level 0)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Ichang !!!

Combat modifiers
Defender:
Attacker:

Allied ground losses:
62 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Non Combat: 10 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Units destroyed 1

Assaulting units:
35th Division
36th Division
116th
63rd Division
27th Division
110th Division
39th
26th Engineer Regiment
4th Mortar Battalion
71st Mountain Gun Regiment
5th Ind.Hvy.Art Battalion
6th Medium Field Artillery Regiment
28th Fld AA Gun Co
49th Field AA Battalion
11th Ind.Art.Mortar Battalion
8th Ind.Hvy.Art. Battalion
Tonei Hvy Gun Regiment
Botanko Hvy Gun Regiment
57th Field AA Battalion
11th Field Artillery Regiment

Defending units:
3rd Group Army

I posted this combat result because it shows that Dave has detached the 1800 AFVs from his Ichang army and has sent them to Hankow en route to relieve Sinyang. I have some 4000 AV of Chinese troops bearing down on Sinyang but now with the tank divisions spotted and heading my way the Chinese will retreat back towards Nanyang. Tenth Air Force heavy bombers based at Chungking will interdict the road movement of the IJA tank formations.

Another Chinese army with 2200 AV reaches Loyang this turn and a deliberate attack is ordered for next turn.

In the south.....the Allies retake Pakhoi:

Ground combat at Pakhoi (72,58)

II AUSTRALIAN CORPS

Allied 2E bombers hit the level 4 Japanese AF at Lolobato. Allied 4Es based on Dobo hit the George base on Galeia and destroy 11 Georges on the ground. Between the CBI and the DEI Japan loses 115 AC this turn vs Allied losses of 82 AC. In A2A....Japan loses 48 Ac vs Allied losses of 13 AC. On the ground....Japan loses 24 AC vs Allied losses of 37 AC.

CENTPAC: D DAY ON KWAJALEIN

Somehow D Day arrives 1 day early on Kwajalein. The LSTs were 8 hexes away but still moved and unloaded most of their equipment. The APAs were 11 hexes away from Kwajalein but still move and unload most of their troops. The defending Japanese garrison is so shell shocked from the incessant aerial and naval bombardments that its incapable of putting up significant resistance:

Ground combat at Kwajalein Island (132,115)

Allied Shock attack

Attacking force 7565 troops, 188 guns, 90 vehicles, Assault Value = 284

This pretty well wraps up CENTPAC ops in this part of the Pacific. Japan still holds the atolls of Majuro and Jaluit but without AFs they do not represent a threat to CENTPAC SLOC. These 2 bases will intead become PoW camps and will be used for target practice to give experience to newly arriving bomber groups in the theatre.

The only other Japanese bases between the Marianas and the US west coast are Wake, Marcus, Ponape and Truk. Ponape with its 40,000 troops and Truk with its 55,000 troops will be bypassed. Ponape has already been neutalized and Truk will be bombed into oblivion in the near future. CENTPAC will probably take out Wake Is. in January 1944 and once we capture Wake some 4Es will be based there to shut down the level 1 AF and seaplane base at isolated Marcus.

CALM BEFORE THE STORM

Post by racndoc »

11/9-11/10/43

PACIFIC COMMANDS

Landing craft pull the 2 Marine assault regiments out of Kwajalein and replace them with seabees, BFs and a USMC defense battalion. APAs/AKAs are pulled out of the Marshalls and Gilberts and sent back to Luganville and Brisbane for repairs.

The 4 Essex class CVs complete their repairs at Luganville and are ready for action in conjunction with Lex, Sara, Wasp, 6 CVLs and 5 CVEs. The 3 Yorktown class CVs will complete their repairs at Sydney in 11 days. We have captured Babar and Kwajalein under the umbrella of land based air as we wait for the fast carriers to come back on line and I think that we will be able to land one more invasion before the carriers are back in action.

VF, VMF, VB and VT reorganization has been completed as the carriers have finished their repairs and upgrades.

II AUSTRALIAN CORPS

Fifth Air Force heavy bombers hit the George base on Galeia and the Oscar base on Morotai while P-38Hs sweep overhead. Japan loses another 11 Georges at a cost of 11 P-38Hs....an exchange rate that we simply cant afford. Overall...between the CBI and the DEI the Allies lose 78 AC vs 60 Japanese AC.

But Dave keeps pulling back his fighter and bomber groups deeper and deeper into the DEI as Allied medium and heavy bombers extend their range farther and farther from their forward AFs.....Allied long range Liberator recon AC have photgraphed all the invasion beaches on Mindanao over the last week. If I can coerce Dave into continuing the pullback of his air groups in the DEI he could be vulnerable to another coup de main in the periphery of the DEI covered by Allied land based air but out of range of Japanese air groups.

CBI

Dave sends CA Kumano into action off Rangoon to interdict Allied supply convoys. First...CA Kumano runs into DD Benham on ASW patrol off the mouth of the Irrawaddy River:

Not only dont Allied FBs, TBs and level bombers attack the CA Kumano surface TF but none of our PBY squadrons even spots them.

Ive attached a screenshot of central and northern China. While Dave massed most of his mobile forces in northern China against Ichang the Allies capture Loyang and threaten Sinyang, Wuchang and Nanchang. Over 90% of the IJA AFVs massed against Ichang have redeployed to the railyards at Hankow where thay can reinforce Sinyang or Chengchow by rail so I need to exercise some caution here.

Looks like you have not lost a CV to this date. Excellent results! No wonder you can push the Japanese back everywhere.

Love the Recon deception at Mindanao. I am learning a lot about maskarovka from your AAR.

In China, if that unit just south of Nanyang moves one hex east, it can cut the rail connection between Sinyang and Chengchow so you can proceed with your attack without worrying about the armour for a few days.

BBfanboy......good point on cutting the rail line with a single LCU. Sometimes I just focus so much on interdicting the rail heads that I neglect to consider just cutting the rail line itself....sometimes you dont see the forest for the trees I guess. I am following your suggestion and moving a single unit to cut the rail line next turn.

11/11-11/12/43

SUBS

Allied subs hadnt done anything in over a week and I was beginning to wonder if Dave was leaving his convoys in port or if his ASW TFs and ASW AC were so advanced/experienced that Allied subs were being suppressed to the point where they were no longer able to establish contacts on shipping. Well this turn we had 3 sub imtercepts:

SS O21 sinks DD Asanagi off Muntok.

SS Tang sinks xAP Atsuta Maru near Torishima.

SS Tunney sinks E W-16 by Balikpappan.

CBI

Tenth Air Force hammers the Japanese level 4 AF at Tavoy and Ayuthia in Thailand.

Another large supply convoy for Rangoon forms up off Akyab. Next turn it will make a run for Rangoon but this time we will escort it with 1 RN CA and 2 RN CLs.

In China....Dave uses his lightning fast tank formations to surround yet another slow Chinese corps:

Ground combat at Pucheng (86,57)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 7001 troops, 76 guns, 235 vehicles, Assault Value = 362

Fortunately surrounded Chinese units seem to fight like surrounded IJA units. Ive got a relief force on the way but I not sure if it will arrive in time. Tenth Air Force heavy bombers based at Chungking will target the Japanese besiegers here at Pucheng.

SWPAC

Allied troops are now within one hex of Sarmi where they encounter the Japanese that were retreating from their defeat at Hollandia. A bombardment is ordered for recon:

Japanese Unit(s) Wiped Out at Babar by attrition!!!

We now have 5 mutually supporting level 4 or larger airfields on the periphery of the DEI.

Allied assault transports and landing craft complete loading of the 3rd and 8th Australian Brigades at Darwin. Next turn they will cross the Arafura Sea and blend into the "background noise" of all the Allied shipping in the Kai-eilanden/Dobo/Taberfane/Saumlaki quadrangle. The following turn they will invade a Japanese base deep in the DEI....covered only by land base air. Most Japanese air in the DEI has withdrawn to Morotai/Borneo and beyond due to the ferocity of the Allied counterair bomber offensive.

An USN surface TF stands by in the Arafura Sea to cover the amphib assault....it is currently beyond the range of Japanese naval search.

SUBS

SS I-157 is hit by 22 DCs from an USN ASW TF and sunk off Bathurst Is.

SS Tally Ho sinks PB Rokko Maru near Malacca.

CBI

Another convoy with 50,000 supplies makes it safely to Rangoon and begins to unload.

There is no interference from Japanese fighters or bombers..... Dave is has commited his air forces to another offensive in northern China.

The SEAC army outside of Chiang Mai should finally shock attack across the river into that base next turn. Vengeance DBs are staged into Pegu to help soften up the Japanese garrison.

My surrounded Chinese corps at Pucheng will be finished off before I can relieve it:

Dave catches me by surprise with a new offensive in northern China. Somehow his 2 tank divisions that were leading the offensive to take Ichang make it to Hankow....rail to Tsiaotso...and then shock attack across the river into Loyang this turn:

About a third of the Chinese army here evacuates the hex but Dave will have at least 2 more turns to assault the Chinese before the remainder of the army can withdraw.

Over 100 heavy bombers from Tenth Air Force stage to Chungking, Changsha and Hengchow and they will carpet bomb the IJA armor next turn. Over 70 fighters are staged into Sian to cover the retreating Chinee army. I will start airlifting anti-tank regiments into Sian next turn.

II AUSTRALIAN CORPS

I had withdrawn all the heavy and medium bombers from this theatre a couple of turns ago to create the impression that the DEI was becoming more of a back water. This turn virtually all of the medium and heavy bombers of Fifth Air Force stage back to northern New Guinea and the DEI to carpet bomb the Japanese garrison on Boela.

Amphibious transports carrying the 3rd and 8th Australian Brigades will hit the beaches on Boela next turn. The amphibious assault will be LRCAPed by 140 land based fighters on Kai-eilanden. An USN surface TF loitering in the Arafura Sea will commence a fast run in to cover the invasion.

The P-47D2s were missing in action as I staged 2 squadrons to China for the upcoming battle over Loyang and the remaining 2 squadrons of P-47D2s were tasked with CAPing Pegu.

Well at least the 2 supply convoys got through and another 85,000 supplies are dropped off at Rangoon.

At Loyang.....Dave rests his tank heavy army after the shock attack of the previous turn. Meanwhile....a heavy aerial battle breaks out over Loyang as we LRCAP it to cut down on IJAAF bombing of Chinese troops while the heavy bombers of Tenth Air Force return the favor by bombing the Japanese tanks. In the heavy air battles over Rangoon and Loyang the Allies lose 50 AC in A2A combat this turn vs 31 Japanese AC.

Dave only bombards at Loyang as he rests his troops:

The Chinese army at Loyang will evacuate the hex next turn but Dave will get one more shot at them with his tank heavy army. Dave moved another LCU in the rear of our Loyang army so that if it does retreat after combat the road to Sian will be open. I have reinforcements from Sian marching towards Loyang including 3 anti-tank regiments. Another AT regiment at Changsha will be airlifted to Sian this next turn.

I took a cue from BBfanboy and used a Chinese LCU to cut the Sinyang/Chengchow rail line. The 50 IJA LCUs resting in Wuchang and Hankow will not be able to reinforce the Japanese army at Loyang.

The P-47D2s staged into China last turn from Burma will be able to help LRCAP Loyang next turn.

Dave bombards at Wuchang to recon the Chinese army investing the city:

There was a pretty good air battle over Boela as both the Allies and Japan CAP'ed and bombed each others troops. Dave committed his Georges here as well as over Rangoon and central China so he is rapidly upgrading his fighter squadrons. Another deliberate attack is ordered for next turn after Fifth Air Force once again hammers the garrison troops.

SWPAC

US Army armor arrives just one hex away from Sarmi:

We now have a level 4 AF in northern Thailand. The 1400 AV SEAC army here will now attack Uttadarit and threaten to break out into the central Thailand plain near Pisanuloke. This was originally planned to be the main Allied offensive into Thailand but Dave realized thge danger and has nearly 100,000 troops positioned to defend against it.

Instead...this offensive into the center of Thailand will be a diversion. orginally Dave had over 150,000 troops and 1000 AFVs in Moulmein to defned against a coastal offensive but now he has stripped his defenses on the coast and has only 72,000 troops remaining. On the opposite bank of the Salween River we have had 2200 AV of SEAC troops quietly resting and prepping for Moulmein. Ive shipped 8 armor/mechanized Aussie brigades from Australia to In dia and they are now taking up positions in southern Burma. In addition...Ive purchased 2 India Command divisions and also have an East African Division marching towards Rangoon so eventually we should have nearly 4000 AV of troops to force our way across the Salween. Of course this offensive will be backed by the full might and authority of the heavy bombers of Tenth Air Force. Everyone is still prepping so this offensive is not scheduled to start until Feb. 1944.

In China....Dave moved an IJA LCU behind our army retreating from Loyang to interdict its movement. This turn the Chinese overran the IJA roadblock:

Ground combat at 86,43 (near Loyang)

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 31657 troops, 117 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1158

Defending force 980 troops, 12 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 35

Allied adjusted assault: 111

Guns lost 8 (8 destroyed, 0 disabled)

Allied ground losses:

Squads: 1 destroyed, 8 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Now the road is clear for the Chinese to withdraw into the forests SE of Sian. Tenth Air Force heavy bombers are striking tghe IJA troops in Loyang to keep them out of "move" mode.

Post by BBfanboy »

I think you said earlier that most of your sealift is committed to the Carolines/Marshalls/Boela areas, but since you are looking at a delay of two months before launching your southern attack in Burma, I wonder if you have considered a landing at Tavoy and march one hex to the road to Ayuthia, the key to Bangkok. All his troops in northern Thailand would be in deep doo-doo if you cut their road/supply line to the south. An advance paradrop to cut the road would prevent him railing any of the northern troops south to meet your march over the jungle/rough hex between Tavoy and the Ayuthia road.

Just a wild idea I have had for some time but I understand you may not be prepared to try it. I have no idea whether he could stop the advance there with air strikes.

BBfanboy....good point on using an amphib assault to outflank the Japanese in SE Asia at Tavoy. I generally only deploy USN carriers in semi-historical situations and locations so I wont be sending them to SE Asia anytime soon. Besides....the 3 Yorktown class CVs will complete repairs next turn and then offensive ops will ramp up across the pacific. My main strategic goal for the war is to isolate the SRA from the Home Islands ASAP by establishing airfields in the Philippines and I hope to be able to achieve this objective in the next 6 months. For me....SE Asia and China are mainly sideshows.

In massive aerial battles over the DEI and China the Japanese lose 184 AC vs Allied losses of 34 AC. In A2A.....Japan loses 137 AC vs Allied losses of 10 AC.

I had placed over 100 fighters on LRCAP over Boela and the USN CAs but not very many actually sortied....perhaps the LRCAP was fragmented due to the drifting of the LRCAP that occurred during the turn. CA Baltimore is heavily damaged but has already been disbanded in port at Kai-eilanden so she should survive.

My biggest deficiency in China is in artillery. I purchased 4 arty regiments in Calcutta this turn....they are relatively expensive compared to infantry....and Im railing them to Ledo where Im hoping that my long range transport AC can airlift them to the Chinese rail head at Tuyun.

...at sea aboard xAP Disney Dream

Post by racndoc »

The game has been on hold for a week as Ive been at sea with my family aboard xAP Disney Dream. As anyone who has been to sea is familiar with.....internet connections are spotty at best.

xAP Disney Dream is 40% larger than the first 2 Disney xAPs.....the Wonder and the Magic. xAP Disney Dream has a length of 1,115' and a displacement of 130,000 tons. xAP Disney Dream has a greater displacement than all 3 Yorktown class CVs _combined_....or another way to look at it....the Dream has a larger displacement than BB Yamato and BB Musashi _combined_. The Dream hold 4000 passengers and has a crew of 1458.....she is truly a floating hotel. We are currently cruising at a speed of 18 knots in an off map area....about 3-4 days sail from Cristobal.

Our port of debarkation was Port Canaveral. Port Canaveral must be rated a level 10 port with over 1000 naval support. Port Canaveral can easily handle 4 xAPs at a time with over 300,000 tons displacement. Port Canaveral is able to debark over 10,000 passengers with all their equipment in less than 3 hours...and is then able to embark another 10,000 passengers with all their equipment in less than 5 hours. xAP is also able to refuel and rearm in less than 9 hours(the Disney xAPs need to rearm their mortars in port as they are the only xAPs to have firework shows at sea).

Our WitP AE game resumes tomorrow.

Here is a screenshot of the main battery going off:

Mortars!

Very glad you were not on that Carnival liner that had the engine fire. AE players are in enough *@#! with their significant others already without living in it. [8|]

RE: II AUSTRALIAN CORPS RESUMES THE OFFENSIVE

Post by racndoc »

BBfanboy.....Id book a trip on a tramp steamer before I would book on a Carnival cruise line ship....LoL.

The thing that really impresses me about modern xAPs is the scale. I vacation in San Diego quite a bit and been on CVB Midway .....she has been turned into an aircraft carrier museum there. I thought that she was a pretty big ship....45,000 tons when she was launched in 1945 and now 74,000 tons today. Then one Sunday AM I saw CVN-76 off Point Loma and watched her sail into the harbor and I almost fell off my chair on the hotel room balcony.......CVN-76 USS Ronald Reagan displaces 101,000 tons and I thought that she was the biggest ship that I had ever seen. CVN-76 dwarfs CVB Midway. Now the modern xAPs are 30%, 40% even 50% more displacement.

Back to the war!

SUBS

SS Tunny sinks xAK Argun Maru off Tawi Tawi.

SS Tunny torpedoes xAK Shanghai Maru off Tawi Tawi.

SS Tunney sinks xAK Kozan Maru off Tawi Tawi to complete the hat trick.

PACIFIC COMMANDS

CA Baltimore makes port in Kai-eilanden and repairs 10 points of flotation damage she acquired when hit by 2 torpedoes on the previous turn. This turn Im sending her to Taberfane where she will again be disbanded and then she will be sent to Darwin to get her out of harm's way.

Fifth Fleet sails from ports across the Pacific for a rendezvous off Milne Bay.....the 3 Yorktown class CVs complete repairs and depart from Sydney, 6 CVEs sail from Brisbane and 7 CVs/6 CVLs sail from Luganville to meet up with BBs and CAs that left Pearl harbor and Auckland several days ago. One Fifth Fleet forms up off the tip of SE New Guinea....all the ships will refuel and then head out for the war zone and the next round of amphib assaults.

When the smoke clears......Japan has lost 102 AC in A2A combat vs Allied losses of 55 AC. The Allies lose another 31 Hurricane IIcs but Japan loses 42 Georges, 48 Bettys and 25 A6M2s.

Im pulling the RAF fighters out of the front line in Burma. They will not CAP Rangoon or Pegu but will still cover the supply convoys in between Rangoon and Akyab. There are 2 squadrons of P-47D2s in Burma and 2 squadrons in China. This turn I am upgrading 2 more USAAF fighter squadrons to P-47D2s at tenth Air Forcxe HQ at Chittagong.

In China.....Dave heavily bombs the Chinese army withdrawing from Loyang towards Sian while Allied heavy bombers pound the Japanese troops still at Loyang to pin them in place. Dave orders another shock attack with his armored vanguard on the retreating Chinese:

Dave still has nearly 3 divisions at Loyang that wont make it to reinforce the attack here before the Chinese army exits the hex and withdraws into the relative safety of the forests east of Sian. An additonal 1700 AV of Allied troops with 3 AT regiments is marching to reinforce this retreating Chinese army.

The RAF and Tenth Air Force heavy bombers based throughout China will target the armor in the same hex as our retreating Chinese army next turn to increase their disruption.

At Wuchang and Lang Son....the Japanese continue to bombard away with massed artillery:

SUBS

SS Batfish sinks AO Shiretoku Maru off Tawi Tawi.

Two additional USN subs attack AO and TK convoys near Tawi Tawi.....this appears to be a major Japanese convoy route to bring fuel back to Japan.......or Dave is massing AOs to support KB near Tawi Tawi.

SS Finback torpedoes xAK Sado Maru by Truk.

PACIFIC COMMANDS

Fifth Fleet continues to concentrate in the waters south of Milne Bay. Fifth Fleet currently has 6 CVEs available to cover amphib ops. Im going to add CVL Hermes to these CVEs and they should then be able to put up over 170 fighters on CAP. CVE St. Lo sails out of port in Portland this turn to join Fifth Fleet. CVE Sangamon is repairing in the Sydney shipyards and has an estimated 21 days left to complete repairs. By 1/1/44 Fifth Fleet should have 8 CVEs plus CVL Hermes to be able to put up a CAP of over 210 fighters over Allied invasion beaches. I will wait until these 2 CVEs are online before we assault the heart of Japanese island based air defences in the Carolines/Paulaus.

BTW....how can I have a CVE St. Lo when St. Lo doesnt happen for another 8 months?

I US Corps continues its advance on Sarmi as tac bombers hit the IJA garrison there of over 20,000 troops. Fifth Air Force medium and heavy bombers continue to rest and build up for the upcoming offensives.

CBI

Quiet over Burma.

In northern China.....Dave launches a final shock attack on the Chinese army retreating from Loyang towards Sian in one last throw of the dice to annihilate it:

Ground combat at 86,43 (near Loyang)

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 35409 troops, 432 guns, 1242 vehicles, Assault Value = 1910

Defending force 34175 troops, 117 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1105

The Chinese army.....or what is left of the Chinese army.....is able to withdraw in good order to the 3x terrain to the east of Sian. Allied AT regiments and infantry are only a 1 or 2 turn march away from reinforcing so this Japanese offensive has been blunted. I only have about 700 Av left out of an original force of nearly 1800 AV but Japanese losses have been much heavier. My sweepers didnt fly until too late and massed RAF and Tenth Air Force heavy bombers flew in unescorted to carpet bomb the onrushing IJA tank divisions and I ended up losing 13 USAAF heavy and 9 RAF heavy bombers but the cost was worth it to preserve the Chinese land forces defending Sian.

The 1st and 3rd IJA Tank Divisions are now decimated and will be only marginally effective for quite some time.

The Hurricane IIcs have been pulled back to the rear areas in Burma and India and they will continue to train replacement pilots and cover supply convoys heading into Rangoon. Japan loses 33 Georges this turn vs Allied losses of 4 Spitfire VCs, 2 P-47D2s and 2 P-40N1s.

Quiet over China as Dave coninues to bombard us with massed artillery at Wuchang and Lang Son and Allied transport AC fly in artillery LCUs from Ledo into central China.

PACIFIC COMMANDS

Brand new CVE Manila Bay leaves port at Portland and heads out to the south Pacific. It seems almost like Christmas now as Ive gotten 2 new CVEs in the last 3 turns and a new CVL should arrive at Balboa next turn.....it looks like the massive US industrial machine is finally kicking up into high gear now. I looked at the ship arrival chart and the Allies should receive 2 CVs, 2 CVLs and 9 CVEs in the next 60 days..... absolutely amazing!

Meanwhile.....the 10 CVs, 6 CVLs and 7 CVEs of Fifth Fleet rendezvous with the AOs off Milne Bay and top off their fuel storage bunkers. They will now head out into the war zone for the next round of Allied amphib advances.

APAs load assault troops at Darwin and are sent out to Dobo and Taberfane....their jump off points for the next II Australian Corps assault. Dave has a lot more naval search over this entire area as we have sneaked in 2 small invasions right under the nose of the Japanese while devoid of any carrier CAP. Dave will most certainly spot these loaded APAs next turn but Im hopeful that they again blend into the "background noise" of all the shipping in the area and do not stand out like a sore thumb.

Ive spotted a lot of IJN shipping around Morotai so I staged one VMSB squadron and about 30 F4U-1s into our most forward AF at Boela to see if we can inflict some more naval attrition.

An IJN air combat TF is spoted heading east from the Philippines towards Babeldaob. Its not a large air combat TF but its the first one that Ive spotted in quite some time:

SUBS

SS Greenling sinks xAK Hoeisan Maru off Puerto Princessa.

SS Tally Ho strikes a mine near Tanjoengpinang and probably will not make it back to port.

SS Billfish sinks xAK Iwakuni Maru by Saisho Tu.

SWPAC

Lead elements of I US Corps invest Sarmi. It will take about 2 more turns for the armor and combat engineers to reach Sarmi and then we will launch a deliberate assault.

II AUSTRALIAN CORPS

II Australian Corps will invade Babo next turn. Dave's naval search spotted APA Monrovia off Dobo last turn but he cant be sure of our objective.

This invasion will be LRCAPed by fighters based at Dobo and Kai-eilanden. Five squadrons of B-25D1s with F4U-1 escorts are staged into Kai-eilanden in case Dave has a surface TF lurking around.

Amphib transports begin loading the 1st Australian Division at Darwin. I just purchased 1st Australian Division with PPs this turn....it only cost around 350 PPs to change it over to II Australian Corps HQ as opposed to over 2000 PPs for a regular Allied division to change HQ.

Meanwhile....Fifth Fleet again tops off its fuel bunkers in the southern reaches of the Arafura Sea.

CVL Langley exits the Panama Canal at Balboa and heads out across the south Pacific to join Fifth Fleet.

SUBS

SS Finback torpedoes xAK Akasisan Maru near Truk.

SS I-41 sinks xAK Samuel Adams off Horn Island....well....there goes the beer.

SS I-41 sinks TK Santa Maria off Horn Island. Fifth Fleet was able to pass through the Torres Straits just before the IJN subs arrived. A couple of ASW TFs will be dispatched to clear up the sea lanes around the Torres straits.

CBI

Quiet across the theatre.

Another supply convoy for Rangoon with 80,000 supplies forms up at Calcutta. The convoy will stage to Akyab next turn and then Rangoon on the following turn. Hurricane IIcs will LRCAP the convoy.

SWPAC

I US Corps continues to mass at Sarmi while tac, medium and heavy bombers of Fifth Air Force pummel the Japanese garrison there.
