Races ect...

Post by tdouglas »

Hello All,

I've been playing ToS for a few years now, and I'm a Mech Force veteran from years ago. Larkin I love what you and others have done with this game. It is far better than Mech Force or BattleTech, but I suspect you already know this.

What is the best race for the end game? It seems like the replicants are best at first, but Cyborgs and Androids are best at the end because of their special resistances. Whats everyone's opinion?

I'm also currious as to what is everyone's favorite Icon is. I really like titan 17 (which I switch with 20) also 14, 16, and 12 are favorites of mine.

I find replicants to be useful early on, like you said, but their weakness against NBs makes them risky later on in the game. I actually tend to use mostly humans for my jocks. No special weaknesses to them.

Androids are nice, but that slow healing can be a big, big problem.

So do androids need medical skill? Is life support used at all or can I just use life 1 in everything?

I'm not sure about the medical skill - Iceman or Larkin can answer that, but I do know that android pilots do not need life support to heal. They may, however, still need it to prevent shock damage - again, I'll let Iceman or Larkin answer that.

Go tell that to the MegaMek community. :)
I tried it once, but only got one answer. It's not BT. Of course not, it's better :) End of conversation.
And I'm a hard-core BT fan...

BT vs ToS

Post by tdouglas »

Yea. I like BT as well. The BT mechs have a llok and feel of something that looks humanoid, where ToS has a feel of a war machine. I think its that there is a standard icon for each fraim. I'm not sure why exactly. I also like that you can go to 200 tons. And all the weapons systems are much cooler than BT. I really like the defenses. It has taken me a long time to appreciate them.

Since each race has it's special advantages in the beginning those advantages will carry over to the end. Meaning that a jock with an edge in intelligence or dexterity will someday be a killer with GMs or Cannons/Lasers in this case. An advantage is allways good but the disadvantages should be taken care of as well. While Cyborgs lack of charishma doesn't matter that much(you only need one leader) the replicants weakness against radiation may cost you your champion someday.
I have them all in my team, but mostly humans&replicants.

In WS charisma gives you some advantages in rank advancement.
Even in 1.4, Cha is secondary attribute to Business, so it's not unimportant either.
As for Reps, just make sure you protect them with very good life supports, and high Constitution. That'll reduce the risk. A shield is also a good help, though its protection is halved against NBs and engine explosions.

Fortunately your "reps" will rarely be near explosions or neutron blasters. But then again it only needs to happen once :( And i must admit i forgot about Charisma and bussiness skill but you only need one manager as well :)

I loose most jocks to shock damage after life support failure. That or overheating in forest fires. That's when a shield comes really handy. BTW i once shitched off the shield in such a fire...get this! I did it cos the shields themselves produce heat so i had a better chance of staying cool with the shield off....aha..........

Hmmm, wait till you play missions/campaigns in WS, your reps won't be safe :) And then there's airdrops.

About shields, yep, in 1.4 if you care to go through the trouble of calculating heat (like I did right before WS beta started :) ) you'll see that for some shields it's better to turn them off when in burning dense woods. Needless to say, WS fixed that.
