Always happens when you are really really anxious to get a turn back! Murphy at his best... [:D] I will keep the fingers crossed!

RE: Australia Invaded!! NY59Giants (A) vs Olorin (J)
Murphy is one possible reason for the delay. So is a devastating blow ... and subsequent heavy drinking! [:D]

RE: Australia Invaded!! NY59Giants (A) vs Olorin (J)
Dec 13, 14, 15 :
Maloelap invaded
KB sighting!!
Key: TT = Torpedo; bb = ground bombardment; c = casualties; b = base hits; s = supply hits; r = runway hits; p = port hits; f = fuel hits; AV = Assault Value; DC = Depth Charged; (*) = destroyed aircraft; If odds are underlined, they are the Allies.
Subs:
I-20 is off Mili and is hit three times by DDs in a SC TF headed towards Maloelap. Damage seems to be light.
I-16 is off Mili and gets a shot at my retreating BB TF from Maloelap. CA Cornwall is hit with 1 TT [13-30(21)-1-0].
CVs:
KB is spotted on 14th @ 128, 107 (2 NE Eniwitok) as I had moved a PBY-5 group up to Makin and placed them at max range (20 hexes). Mouseover showed 232 fighters, 231 bombers, and 61 aux. On the 15th, she is GONE!! [:)]
Allied CVs remain 1 hex SE of Maloelap.
India/Burma:
The march through the jungle continues. An Indian division is now just one hex NE of Lashio and the base shows two LCUs present. I don't known what strength is there.
China:
North - Yenan is still targeted by over 30 Sallys. The two Corps and HQ are now three hexes easterly from Hankow, while about 70 bombers attack daily.
South - Wuchow and Kukong have their AF attacked. Kweilin is swept by up to 30 Oscars daily.
Australia: [>:][>:]
South Pacific:
Luganville - 68 B-17s hit the AF and face just 5 Zeros, damage is light. About the same number hit it again on 14th.
Central Pacific: -
Marshalls -
Roi-Namur - 32 B-24s hit the AF on 14th to help keep it closed.
Kwajalein - 1 of 3 DDs is hit with 2 bombs from my SBDs now stationed at Mili. [:)] 36 B-24s hit AF while 42 B-17s sink an xAKL in port. Just a few Rufe and Tojo rise up to try to ruin my aim. 38 B-17s hit the AF on 14th vs 5 Rufes on CAP. 6 P-38s destroy 1 of 2 Rufes on CAP.
Wotje - 48 B-24s hit the AF. 18 P-38s sweep empty skies on the 14th. This is followed up by 47 B-24s attacking the AF. 79 B-17s & B-24s hit the AF on 15th.
Maloelap - 30 B-25s hit the troops and inflict 172 casualties on 14th.
15th -
North Pacific:
Amchitka - Up to 19 A-29 Hudson hit AF daily and when weather permits. 3 DDs on Fast Transport mission sink 1 of 12 PT boats.
Engineering: - Chittagong P6; Cox's Bazar AF7;
Notes:
Marshalls - with the appearance and now disappearance of KB, this island group will be mine in a matter of weeks. Maloelap is already an AF4 and just needs repairs before my 2e bombers and short legged fighters move in to keep the AFs closed down and provide LRCAP for the rest of the invasions. I'm loading two SeaBees, BF, and Air HQ to land at Maloelap from Gilberts. I'll have to juggle the overstacking and possible supply penalties.
KB - If he is not willing to engage now, then when?? I just got 3 CVEs at Panama with their 21 Wildcats and 9 Avenger TBs. They will need to train up, but will be added to the growing Allied "Death Star" on the march in the Central Pacific.

The number is down to 54 on 18th.
Maloelap - 16th
North Pacific:
Amchitka - Up to 19 A-29 Hudson hit AF daily and when weather permits. My CA, 4 CL, 4 DD BB TF hits the base again inflicting 160c, 3b, 1s, 14r.
Engineering: - Kodiak F5; Katha AF4; Roto AF9; Mili P1; Comilla AF6; Ahmedabad AF2
Notes:
The quick capture of Maloelap without significant resistance means the Marshalls are mine. It will take some more time for the rest of the islands to fall, but with Mili steadily expanding and the eventual repairs of the AF4 at Maloelap the island group will be in Allied hands soon enough.
Note to self. [:D] Add in empty xAK/xAPs TF to reload Combat Engineers and Tank units. Then, have the construction engineers, BFs, and Air HQs ready in another TF to unload. This is a must for atolls with stacking limits at 6000. [:-]

RE: Australia Invaded!! NY59Giants (A) vs Olorin (J)
Dec 22, 23, 24 :
Another Allied BB sunk by Japanese subs.
Key: TT = Torpedo; bb = ground bombardment; c = casualties; b = base hits; s = supply hits; r = runway hits; p = port hits; f = fuel hits; AV = Assault Value; DC = Depth Charged; (*) = destroyed aircraft; If odds are underlined, they are the Allies; BG = Bomber Group of 48 planes (4 x 12 bomber squadrons)
Subs:
I-24 launches 8 TT at BB West Virginia (3 SE of Ocean) and get 1 TT to hit. She is able to stay with the TF, but then I-170 gets 3 of 4 TT to hit again (2 West of Nonouti). These are enough to sink her. [:(]
Two ASW TF of 3 DDs are formed at Tabiteuea. They are sent out to patrol zones between there and Ocean. I-170 is DC and sunk by one of them. [:)]
CVs:
My CVs are now to the SE of Nauru to support the invasion.
KB "appears" to have headed back to Truk.
India/Burma:
Akyab and Cox's Bazar are each swept by 17 Tojo on 22nd.
China:
North - Yenan is still targeted by over 30 Sallys. The two Corps and HQ are now three hexes easterly from Hankow, while up to 70 bombers attack daily. Two deliberate attacks happen over three days. Their fate is sealed.
South - Wuchow and Kukong have their AF attacked. Kweilin is swept by up to 30 Oscars daily.
Australia: [>:][>:]
South Pacific:
Luganville - My B-17s are worn out and resting at Suva.
Central Pacific: - My B-17s and B-24s are stood down.
Marshalls -
Roi-Namur - On the 22nd, my SBDs from Mili reach out and....
Kwajalein - 23 P-38s sweep the empty skies.
Wotje - 32 B-26s hit the AF and troops. 12 Wildcats escort in 14 A-20s to hit troops (they come from the partially repaired Maloelap AF). 36 SBDs are added to these groups on the 24th (they don't inflict many casualties due to poor GrdB skill).
Nauru - Another shock attack on 22nd wipes out the last of the defenders. With KB gone, the transports move back from Ocean to finish unloading.
North Pacific:
Amchitka - Up to 19 A-29 Hudson hit AF daily and when weather permits. 5 PT face off against a 3 DD Fast Transport TF. Neither side gets any hits.
Engineering: - Diego Garcia AF4; Auckland F7; Kalemyo AF3; Anchorage F3; Seward AF5
Notes:
Nick replied that he uses his subs mainly to go after warships. They have done more damage and sinking than his carriers at this point.
QUESTIONS - Is it wiser to keep my DDs with the CVs and BBs OR to decrease those numbers (often 8 DDs per TF) and form a few small ASW TF to fend off his subs?? Have you found it is best to have the CV and/or BB TFs to lead or follow an ASW TF.
Another Allied BB sunk by Japanese subs.

[/center]RE: Australia Invaded!! NY59Giants (A) vs Olorin (J)
In my game vs. Greyjoy, I have had the same problems with BBs as sub magnets. He has sunk 2 BBs completely by submarine (in other words, both undamaged when the first sub torp hit), and one of them was sunk by a RO-boat! Another lightly damaged BB was sunk by subs, and he damaged yet another. I've also lost at lease 4 cruisers 100% to subs. We're playing DaIronBabes-C mod, and prior to this mod I have never seen an IJN sub sink a BB that wasn't already damaged. He's doing a great job driving his boats, it drives me nuts![:@]
I have noticed a big drop off in lethality, though, in mid-1943, with some DD upgrades. I've used dedicated ASW TFs, but escort DDs are doing their job now

I'm playing the same mod as you Brad. We are just 6 months behind yours. I read both AARs to get tips and hopefully, lessen my learning curve as the Allies.

RE: Australia Invaded!! NY59Giants (A) vs Olorin (J)
I´ve also had a lot of problems with Jap subs. Erik often gets his subs past insane ASW assets to strike at capital ships. I have found the only good defense seems to be moving around like crazy while flooding an area with 10-15 ASW TFs. My subs seems to be stuck shooting at PBs and xAKLs lately though! Figures... [:)]

RE: Australia Invaded!! NY59Giants (A) vs Olorin (J)
Several AARs have stated that the best way to subdue the IJN subs is heavy Nav Search to increase their DL. If you know about them, the TFs in the same hex can avoid them and the ASW TFs can close in to attack them.
I think a mixture of escort DDs and ASW ships is called for. Escorts do not have to have the highest ASW rating - they are not there to hunt the subs, just to chase them away from firing positions. The ASW TFs should get the high-rated ASW to kill the buggers.
I would also devote PP to giving all escort COs high Naval skills. They will spoil/prevent successful attacks much better than those in lower skill levels.
BTW, about the lack of engineers at Maloelap - I have repaired much base AF and Port damage without engineers. Troops are not as good at it as engineeers, but they can wield shovels and hammers to get the repairs going. I don't know if that is different for this scenario.

Will fix later. I edited incorrectly. I normally 'copy and paste' the prior post and then close it before pasting it into new posting. I didn't do it this time. Will go back and fix later.

Dec 31; Jan 1, 2, 3 1943 :
1943 arrives!! Decrease in sub dud rate (too bad most are going through 12/42 upgrades).
Wotje invasion TFs near objectives.
Jan 3rd added due to the Combat Replay failing to load, so no info from it.

I-31 is hit once by my ASW TF with 3 SCs off Maloelap. I'm learning to keep my ASW TFs close to potential invasion bases. [;)]
CVs:
Mine are headed for Pearl. They are one or two days out.
India/Burma:
Lashio - Since my initial assaults failed, Nick moved in a BF and Tojos. 25 Tojo are on CAP as 16 Hurricane IIb sweep and 10 P-40K are on LRCAP. He losses one to my 5 on 31st. Only 13 Tojo are left on CAP as another 16 Hurricanes sweep in. He losses another plane. The 25 P-38s claim another one. 35 Oscars escort in 20 Helens, but inflict no casualties. Another 36 Oscars with 27 Helen inflict only 12 casualties. A further 30 Helen don't hit anything.
On 2nd, 70 Oscars are with 30 Helens = 0. My Corp HQ is now within command range. It will take over a week to finish moving it into Lashio.
China:
North - Yenan is still targeted by over 30 Sallys. The two Corps and HQ are now three hexes easterly from Hankow, while up to 70 bombers attack daily. Sian is now the targets of his bombers.

South Pacific:

Kwajalein -

Amchitka - Up to 19 A-29 Hudson hit AF daily and when weather permits. The 1st find Zeros on CAP. 15 A6M3a Zero are no match for 12 P-40Ks as the losses are 5:1. I try to unload supplies brief on 1st, but an AKL and PG are hit. I pulled back my Amphib TFs and sent in 10 PT boats. They face off against 4 DDs with neither side hitting. Thus, my hope to give my SBDs a shot in daylight fails.
Engineering: - Maloelap P2; Kalemyo AF4; Sagigik AF4; Neikiang AF4; Katha AF5; Makin F3; Nauru AF3;

Lashio - This base will take some time. I need more PPs to buy out troops before moving south into the clear terrain bases.
I'm now caught up with AAR. [:)]

Luganville - 11 Zero & 9 Nick are on CAP as 58 B-17s hit the AF on 4th. I lose one B-17 for light damage. 41 B-17s come in on 5th. 33 B-17s come in on 6th.
Central Pacific: -
Marshalls -
Roi-Namur - 16 B-17s get 13r hit on 5th.
Kwajalein - My big BB TF (6 old BBs, 5 CLs, 6 DDs) leaves Tabiteuea for this base. However, they are held just East of Maloelap till I can free up LRCAP fighters from Alinglaplap and Wotje operations. At, Wotje they would come in at mission speed and be there throughout the day. On the 6th, the medium bombers start their work on his troops. 36 B-25s, 34 SBDs, 24 B-26s, 12 A-20s = 159c.
Majuro - The BF is hit by 27 B-26s & 12 A-20s on 4th.
Wotje - Landing and captured on 4th. Bases is severely damaged [100-100-93].
Ailinglaplap - Invaded and captured on the 6th by three construction units with a small AV. It has a size 5 AF potential and is 2 hexes SE of Kwajalein. It will allow the use of medium bombers to attack Kusaie Island.
Kusaie Island - 9 Zero & 42 Nick are on CAP as two sweeps of 18 P-38Gs sweep in. Later, two small 5 plane groups come in. Losses are 15 Nicks & 6 Zeros vs 13 P-38Gs. Since I only get 20 of them a month, this is a one time operation for now.
North Pacific:
Amchitka - Up to 19 A-29 Hudson hit AF daily and when weather permits. Some Canadian Hurricanes and P-40s sweep just in case he moves fighters here.

Rabaul - 20F, 70B, 13 Aux, 50 ships (BB, SS, CS, SS), 5 TF (If I was to guess, this is where KB is at). This base is ONE hex too far for B-24s from a fully built up Nauru Island. Damn!! [:@]
Kusaie - 88F, 44B, 3 Aux. I suspect there may be some Nell/Betty at this size 3 AF so I need to keep my transports LRCAP in Marshalls for a few more days.
A B-24 BG from Tabiteuea is moving to Pago Pago for R&R. They will move to Suva soon.
San Fran - the first of the troops for the South Pacific invasions load up. They will head for NZ for a brief unload to get fatigue down.

Two more bases in Marshalls captured.

India/Burma:
Lashio - 83 Oscars/Nicks/Tojo as CAP/Escorts for 42 Helens to hit my troops on 4th. I lose 1 Hurricane vs Tojo. 19 P-38s are able to destroy 2 Tojo in a sweep. Later, another group of P-38s and Hurricanes sweep in to find empty skies.
China:
North - Yenan is still targeted by over 30 Sallys. Sian is now the targets of his bombers with up to 54 Oscars and 73 Sonia/Sallys hitting the AF.
South - Wuchow and Kukong have their AF attacked by Sallys daily. Kweilin is swept by up to 30 Oscars daily.

RE: Australia Invaded!! NY59Giants (A) vs Olorin (J)
Not to post this over on Jocke's AAR, but I'm already planning to use Maloelap as my forward sub base. It is size 4 AF and Port. Small TKs TF are just arriving from Tabiteuea with fuel. Two AS are in TF coming from San Fran to Gilberts/Marshalls with supplies. I may need to find where all my ARDs are at. I have a 3000 capacity up at Dutch Harbor and the big 30,000 capacity at Canton Island. As soon as all my 12/42 sub upgrades are done at Pearl. They will head here for fuel before deploying.

RE: Australia Invaded!! NY59Giants (A) vs Olorin (J)
Jan 13, 14, 15 :
Action continues in northern China.
Key: TT = Torpedo; bb = ground bombardment; c = casualties; b = base hits; s = supply hits; r = runway hits; p = port hits; f = fuel hits; AV = Assault Value; DC = Depth Charged; (*) = destroyed aircraft; If odds are underlined, they are the Allies; BG = Bomber Group of 48 planes (4 x 12 bomber squadrons)
Subs:
After 12/42 upgrades at Pearl, mine have left for Maloelap to top of fuel tanks and then assigned Patrol Zones.
R0-60 is a little too aggressive at Amchitka. After two DC hits force her to the surface by my DDs, she gets a rude surprise when CA Exeter's 8" shells start to strike her hull. There were at least 6 hits to make her hull look like Swiss cheese before sinking. [:D]
Trusty is hit once by APDs off Moulmein.
CVs:
Mine are at Pearl.
India/Burma:
Mandalay - I send in 3 x 16 Hurricane groups and 2 x 25 P-38s on sweeps for two days. They face a mix of Oscars, Nicks, and Tojo. The Hurricanes break about even in losses vs Oscars and Nicks, but the P-38s does very well against the much hyped Tojo. Olorin's (Nick) email states that the Tojo is not the super fighter at this time in the war that others claim it to be. 5 groups of Liberator II and Wellington (39 total) hit the troops, but when I rest the fighter the next day..... I forget to rest the bombers. [:-]
Lashio - Getting Hurricanes and P-40s to sweep and/or LRCAP from Myitkyina and Katha to do much has not happened yet. I can break even here, but then cannot do anything when Helens with Oscars from Rangoon arrive to hit my troops. The number of his vs my fighters is lopsided in his favor by this time in the air battle. I'll figure this out.
He has also targeted the 70th Brit Div to the NW trying to march to the hex directly to the west of Lashio.
China:
North - The greater Sian area is under attack form both the air and ground. Sian sees Helen, Sally, and Sonia hit the AF hit while an occasional sweep by Oscars keeps this base out of action. Meanwhile, the troops are dug in 3 NE of the base in rough terrain. A Heavy Mortar Rgt is hit by his roving Sally groups trying to head north from Sian to Lanchow. Troops in clear terrain are nothing but target practice. [:(]
South - Kukong has the AF attacked by Helens daily. Kweilin is swept by up to 30 Oscars daily.
Australia: [>:][>:]
South Pacific: [>:][>:] 4e bombers still resting as a B-24 BG from Tabiteuea moves to Pago Pago.
Central Pacific: -
Marshalls -
Roi-Namur - Up to 22 B-17s keep the AF shut down daily (weather permitting).
Kwajalein - My bombers and SBDs continue to work over his troops. Up to 38 B-25s, 32 B-26s, 16 A-20s, 48 B-24s, 36 SBDs are involved.
Kusaie Island - Recon flights only.
Wotje - Base fully repaired and now expanding port.
North Pacific:
Amchitka - Up to 19 A-29 Hudson hit AF daily and when weather permits. P-40s sweep just in case he moves fighters here. Supplies unloading over beach continues. Two BB TFs hit the base with a CA, 6 CLs, and 8 DDs. 359 casualties are inflicted.
Engineering: - Koggala AF3; Katha AF6; Abemama P4; Port Kembla AF6; Tabiteuea F6; Nauru AF4; Diamond Harbor P3; Ailinglaplap AF2; Eureka AF3; Sagigik F3; Katha F3
Notes:
Recon lapse - Somehow I didn't fully watch the efforts to withdraw the 4th Division from Amchitka. I saw numerous Fast TF come and go, but I thought they were only to bring in more supplies. Neither did I put LRCAP over this base which is 4 hexes from Adak. Live and learn now while the price is still cheap.

Since I was unable to get favorable odds initially, Nick has steadily reinforced the base to what you see now. The supply issue for me has hurt. Thankfully, I have the two bases nearby being built up. Overall, the lack of enough PP to buy out full divisions hurts my whole Burma campaign.

I think Nick has it backwards. He has these troops on the trail going up to the very northern part of China while the tank divisions are on the trail due west towards Lanchow.
