In Burma it turns out that both the two Australian divisions in one hex and the two American plus one Indian division in the next hex are all ready to attack tomorrow. A tough day is expected. Hopefully a bright spot will be when allied tanks roll across the rail line above Shwebo, followed a day later my motorized infantry to reinforce them.
In the Pacific, the monster thundered in.

Nauru is a splendid mess. Damage is AR:63, AS: 69, P:0. Going strictly by memory, supplies were reduced by in the range of 6,000 to 9,000 tons. With the port spared, the only ship hit was Rathburne and she is in decent shape. Rathburne will escort Formalhaut to Pearl Harbor where they both will undergo repairs. Formalhaut is the AK that was mauled during the invasion of Nauru and now stands at 0-76(76)-5(5)-0 damage.
Next came the USA 4EB spoiling strikes against Shortlands, aimed at reducing the danger to the USN ships hunting the monster.

B-24s flew from Ndeni, Vanua Lava, and Cooktown. Judging from the number of aircraft that they caught on the ground I think their role was unanticipated. In the end only one strike of 4 bombers flew against the navy hunters, and there proved to be no CAP at all over their prey! All of the B-24s made it safely back to base. It should be noted that all flew with almost zero fatigue, undoubtedly a factor in such a long range mission.
Stay tuned for Part II...
